The Sims 4

The Sims Team announces termination of The Sims 4’s 32-bit and Non-Metal Mac OS versions

Today The Sims Team has announced via EA Help that they’ll be terminating the 32-bit version of The Sims 4 starting in June 2019. Read more about what this switch means for The Sims 4 players down below:

Dear Simmers,

Today we are announcing some changes to the supported specifications for The Sims 4™ on PC and Mac.  As of June 2019, we will no longer support The Sims 4 on Non-Metal Mac OS machines or PC 32-bit Operating Systems.

Apple has announced plans to phase out support for graphics processing technology called OpenGL and will be moving to a new technology known as Metal. Due to this change, we will upgrade The Sims 4 to work with Metal. For those that cannot upgrade to a Metal supporting OS, The Sims 4™: Legacy Edition will be made available to you. Please see the FAQ below.

This update will also retire support for 32-bit Operating Systems. We regularly evaluate our technologies, and to continue growing, improving, and optimizing the game, we have made the decision to retire 32-bit support. If you are a PC player who cannot update to a 64-bit OS, The Sims 4: Legacy Edition will be made available to you. Please see FAQ below.

We want to thank all Simmers who have played or are still playing The Sims 4.

      • I think there is some potential still, but not with The Sims 4 – it seems this current instalment is holding them back in so many ways.

      • just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean others can’t. let people enjoy things. ts4 is actually pretty good and fresh.

        • When will the community gallery be on Xbox I am waiting I have been playing on my computer. It is getting very boring will you add it on Xbox and ps4 PLEASE

      • Thank you I’m tired of hearing all this negative stuff about the game if you don’t like it than don’t play it no one is forcing you to play it

        • I’m tired of hearing all this positive stuff. Your decision to like this game is no more valid than anyone’s decision to dislike it. We want a new, better Sims game that returns to the things we love about the older games.

          • @Michael, well you can want that as you please but TS4 is here to stay for several more years. It would probably help your blood pressure to maybe wait around for TS5 instead of investing your time complaining about a game that you’re not being forced to play instead of finding a game that holds your interest more. It seems like a waste of time and money.

    • You opinion, whilst important to you, is hardly constructive. If you think this about the game, you probably don’t play it. Why are you even here? Shoo.

      • Listen, I have all of the damn packs, I didn’t bought them, I have a shared Origin account, I never intended to do a constructive opinion, is just what I think, and I’m here because i’m a simmer just like you, I have played the game since it was released, I have been a simmer since the sims 1.

Why don’t you go play this game, why are you even here? Shoo.

        • @ Alex I thought shared accounts weren’t allowed and that everyone is basically suppose to have their own copy of the game and DLCs. Are you using the same computer?

    • @Alex It would be cheaper for people who didn’t like the game to wait for TS5 instead of oh so casually thinking stopping TS4 is better and cheaper. Maybe it’s cheaper for those who aren’t as financially invested or as engaged in this game such as bootleggers and those who share accounts. To terminate the game would be a lost of profit for EA, would become a waste of time and resources for DLCs already in progress and would be a waste of money for simmers who actually brought the game (and DLCs) because they game would be incomplete and wouldn’t have some of the popular EPS like university. It wouldn’t make sense for any business to terminate the game since it’s doing well. Even with negative comments, those people who go to the forums or the official website still bring traffic and often times still buy DLCs while complaining about it as if they’re being forced. Also, if they terminate the game people who just spend their time complaining would actually then be forced to look elsewhere for entertainment for once.

  • Ok I don’t have a clue what your talking about I don’t speak technical , dose this mean we have to start all over again ? Can we still play our sims4 with out update ? I play on PC tower IAM so confused , don’t be mean or. Bully me IAM just asking ty

    • How Old is your computer? Are you running Windows 10?

If your computer is 3 years older or newer it should be 64 bit already.

(Note: Open Control Panel is Windows and It will tell you if you are running 32 bit or 64bit system)

    • 1. Right-click the Windows START button. It’s the Windows symbol in the bottom left corner of your desktop.
      2. Select System from the drop-down menu.
      3. Scroll down to System Specifications and look at System Type
      4. If it says 64-bit, you’re good. Your computer will still be supported after June. If it says 32-bit, your computer will not be supported.

If your computer model is not supported, you will need to upgrade to a supported model in order to have continued access to The Sims 4 and all its future updates, packs, and online features.

However, The Sims Team will be releasing The Sims 4: Legacy Edition for previous players of The Sims 4 who no longer have supported computers. The Sims 4: Legacy Edition will be the completed game up to StrangerVille, but will not have any future updates or packs available for it. The Sims 4: Legacy Edition will not have online access to the Gallery.

      • @SnarkyWitch,
Thank you *so much* for explaining how to find out if a PC is 32 or 64 bit!!! <3 I am not tech savvy and was stressing out so much that I would have to get a new computer which I certainly cannot afford this year! But even if my computer hadn't been up to snuff, at least your clear directions on how to figure that out would let me know so I could have been prepared!
        Again, thank you! :)

    • It’s basically saying if you can’t update your operating system that there will be a “new” edition available for those players and you will be able to access your save files

    • if you have a 64 bit operating system you should be fine…if im understanding this correct. you can find out what your operating system is in ‘about pc’

    • If you don’t like the game than that’s you and there is still a very large following for the sims. I have loved the sims since it first came out when I was really young and I still play to this very day. I’m never bored as I use my imagination when I play so possibilities are endless.

All my Apple products support metals so I’m good.

      • @Tiffany, a person can have a very active imagination and still not be happy with or satisfied with the game. In fact, one could argue that the more active and diverse a player’s imagination, the more chances there are to GET bored with the limitations.

If the bounds of a person’s simagination revolve around creating Kardashian-clone sims *ad-nauseum* and making your single female sim have 50, 75, 150 babies then yassssss, it will be, like, so much fun.

It depends on the player. Some people want more out of the game than what we’ve been spoonfed. TS2 was great, as well as TS3’s open world.

As far as the 32-bit change, meh. I hope it doesn’t negatively affect too many simmers.

  • Do I need windows 10? My laptop says it’s 64-bit but I only have windows 8. I have no idea of this kind of stuff

  • OMG! Finally they move Sims to Metal on mac, I’m waiting since Metal announcement at WWDC in 2015. THIS MEANS SO MUCH BETTER PERFORMANCE. I’m planning to upgrade this year but anyway wondering if it will make Sims playable again on my 2012 iMac coz it was unplayable (~15fps) since Cats & Dogs.

    • What I read in this article looks like you wont have to pay it will just just upgrade if you have a 32 bit operating system

  • I don’t like this new programs made by Mac so I bought very expensive computer few years ago, what still works well, but because it is older I can’t download the new version of Mac so that mean I will be not able to play? And all the money what I spent on the games, well that’s just great.

  • Then you better refund all my money back because I spent alot on the sims 4 I’m super pissed!!!

I want my $400.00 worth back then.

    • @Brittney What are you talking about? You’ll still have all the DLCs you paid for if you’re not able to update. You’re not losing anything you paid for. Hopefully, you stayed up to date with the news and realize you don’t have anything to be pissed off about when it comes to your investment in the game so far.

  • Sooooooooo they didn’t even bother to say that they are no longer making new content that will be compatible with the “legacy” edition. It’s funny they didn’t mention that. But I guess they don’t want you to fully understand the scope of this change.

    • They said they are improving, growing, and optimizing the game so cannot run it on those two systems anymore. And they also said you will not be able to buy or use any packs passed the ones created after February 2019 and even listed the ones you will get. So yeah they fully said and explained everything in complete detail. I’m not sure what wasn’t explained?

  • I honestly knew this was prob going to happen. Before my husband updated my computer I had to play on the lowest setting just to get it to run properly. I am sorry for those who are upset. The sims 4 has great potential but the sims 4 team has been holding back for people who are on older pcs. Know they will be able to do a little more without people saying it wont work. They informed you without being rude. Its your choice to upgrade your Pc for the game you love or to move on to another game. Please stop the negative comments. If you dislike the game go play the past sims games. Sims 3 was great as well as sims 2.

  • Hi, sorry if my question seems stupid, but here goes. It says they will drop support for non metal macbooks ( I didn’t know what that was until a few moments ago).
I have a macbook pro 2018 and under settings it says metal supported, so I should be good to go, right?

  • Sims 4 has always felt like an experimental phase for the series, IMO, so I’m not that surprised they’re doing this. I don’t mean that in a bad way; I imagine locking out players with older hardware would go over much worse.

  • I’m just wondering if the whole game is going to have more bugs than ever before. They have yet to create a copy that doesn’t crash entirely too often. Other than that who knows! We shall see and since it is now June 2019, sooner than later.

  • Thank you for sharing this information with us. Without you this would be very difficult to muddle through. I appreciate the information and help that EA offers but your value information is most helpful too. The creations alone that you’ve done are amazing. You know first hand what will work with what. Thank you again. I hope to enjoy playing the Sims games again including the Sims 3 it’s really been awhile since I’ve tried. To be involved again is something to look forward to.

  • I have a HP OMEN 870-224 Desktop and my operating system is a 64-bit so I’m curious as to why I can’t open the game.
