SimCity Cities of Tomorrow: The Academy

1

Greetings, Mayors! When you think of a city of tomorrow, I’d bet you picture amazing high-tech buildings using mind-blowing, innovative science. Well, welcome to The Academy! The Academy is a new building in the SimCity Cities of Tomorrow expansion pack that helps transform your city into that futuristic metropolis in your imagination. The Academy is a think tank that hires workers to research new high-tech buildings and modules. While there are jobs at The Academy for all wealth levels, most are high wealth, so The Academy thrives in a gleaming and pristine city of rich people.

Once The Academy employs enough workers to open, you can start researching high-tech buildings. You’ll immediately have multiple research projects to choose from, including the Maglev, a hyper-fast elevated train, which we’ll be talking more about in the coming weeks. After you complete at least one research project, you can research a level upgrade for The Academy. With each upgrade, you can add a new annex module to The Academy, unlocking additional research projects.

Annexes to your Academy will allow you to research awesome new buildings like the Fusion Power Plant, which provides large amounts of clean power at a huge cost (perfect for cities that want to stay nice and clean). Another module leads to the Garbage Atomizer that slowly atomizes garbage to reduce pollution. Keep in mind, however, that researching these upgrades will require a lot of upkeep, so it’s best to ensure your city is making a steady profit before you invest in these clean technologies. But if your city can support it, building The Academy will not only support your current city, but also the neighboring cities in you region as well, as everyone can take advantage of all the beneficial research it provides.

One of the best effects of The Academy is that all of the high-tech research being conducted at The Academy raises the tech level of nearby industry. The Academy also raises the land value around it, so you’ll have to decide whether to position it near industry or residential. Providing more high wealth workers to The Academy will help you complete research faster, but they’re a notoriously picky bunch, so keeping them happy will be a challenge. You can build a MegaTower near your Academy to bring in those high wealth Sims fast, though. Part of the challenge of building a future city is balancing the wants and needs of The Academy works against the wants and needs of your MegaTowers.

The Academy not only researches new buildings and their modules, it also researches new modules for some of your existing buildings. Complete the Solar/Wind Power Amplifier research for example, and anyone in the region can double the power output of their Solar or Wind Power Plants. These particular modules unlock for anyone in the same region, even if they don’t have Cities of Tomorrow expansion pack.

There’s one thing you need to know before you start deploying all these cool new technologies. All of the buildings and modules researched by The Academy require a connection to ControlNet. ControlNet is a wireless quantum computing network that The Academy generates. The workers at The Academy will generate ControlNet bandwidth. If the signal is weak, your city won’t be dealing with dropped calls, it’ll be dealing with buildings shutting down, so keep The Academy supplied with workers! High wealth workers create more ControlNet than lower wealth workers, so a high wealth city is your best bet to keep that technology running. Keep this in mind when building out the levels in your MegaTower, as what you choose may have a significant impact on how your city develops.

IGN: Joining the Mile-High Club in The Sims 4

Andre isn’t too happy with Ollie. You might even say that there’s a cold war of sorts between the two.

While Andre skulks in the corner, Ollie happily chats up a girl who has shown up at his party. Ollie has been on a roll tonight, and it’s reflected in the choices he has when interacting with his lady. He’s already hit a proverbial double, and if things keep on as they have been, he may round the bases.

But Andre… well, there’s no delicate way to put this, but Andre is kind of a dick. He can’t handle seeing his friend have so much success with the opposite sex while he himself has no prospects whatsoever. So in true Sims fashion, he decides to intervene… with a violin.

See, in The Sims 4, emotions are everything. If a Sim is feeling grouchy, they will carry themselves like a grouch, complete with a slumped gait and a mopey expression. Their interactions will become grumpy, and other Sims will probably find them to be a bit of a buzzkill. When a Sim is happy though, the opposite is true. In The Sims 4, you can be in 15 different emotional states, as well as individual gradations (“kind of sad” to “outright pissed,” for example).

Hello,
I have always wanted a game where you could create your own family and simulate life. When I found out the Sims was actually a game, I purchased it. The first game that I purchased was The Sims 2 Pets on PlayStation 2. After playing it all day, every day, I later purchased The Sims 2 (Original) for PS2, then The Sims Bustin Out (PS2). After about 2 years of playing it on console, I moved over to the PC. My friend had the Sims 2 base game (PC) and did not want it anymore, so I asked him if I could have it. He gave it to me and I was hooked. My day is very busy though. I am a full time High school student (Junior) and have tons of Homework. On my freetime, I love to record the sims for my youtube channel. My channel is called MattGiordanoGames. I usually record all Sims 3, with a little sims 2, and 1 on the side. The LP’s that I’m currently doing are University Life, Seasons, Generations, Supernatural, Pets, Showtime, Sunlit Tides, Island Paradise, Sims 2, Sims 1,The Walking Dead 400 days, Left 4 Dead 2, and SimCity (2013), etc. Yes, its a handful but most of them and far alone and they should finish within the next couple of months to prepare for the sims 4. On my channel I have uploaded nearly 230 videos. I have been active since September 2012 which is when I started. In the future, I WILL be doing a Into The Future LP, and a Sims 4 LP. 🙂
My opinion on The Sims 4: I think it’s perfect! The sims is a video game so I never really wanted it to be super realistic. The looks of the characters are amazing, the the new emotion system is fabulous. I’m really excited.

Thank you so much for this opportunity!

SimCity Cities of Tomorrow: MegaTowers

0

Hello, Mayors and Sim citizens – I’m balance designer Ross Treyz and in this blog we’re going to talk about an awesome new feature of theSimCity Cities of Tomorrow expansion pack: MegaTowers. MegaTowers are giant structures where the Sims of the future live, work, and play. MegaTowers are a great addition to any city, or you can build a city based around them.

Because MegaTowers build up, not out, they can act as a self-contained ecosystem. The residential levels on MegaTowers can also house more Sims then the high-density buildings of the same wealth levels, so you can have more Sims in your city than ever before. This is especially important for attracting Sims to work in the Academy, which we’ll talk more about next week.

The Sims 3 Midnight Hollow: The Doe Family

Source: TheSims3.com

Not all the Sims in Midnight Hollow are eccentric. The Doe family appears to be the epitomy of normal, but then again appearances can be deceiving right? Producer Lisa Smith does not seem to be fooled by their perfect appearance. Learn more about The Sims 3 Midnight Hollow, available Thursday, September 26th on The Sims 3 Store!

The Doe family appears to be the picture of perfection. Jane is the perfect housewife, John is rising in the ranks at his corporate job, and their children are respectful and accomplished. With a life this perfect, we can’t help but wonder what it was that brought them to Midnight Hollow? What are they hiding behind their bright smiles?

doe_mhblog

Good Afternoon, Doe Family! Thank you for letting us be here today. You have a lovely home.
John: Well that’s all due to my wife Jane here.  The light of my life keeps my home perfect and welcoming.
Jane: Oh, John. You’re making me blush!
Aren’t you guys precious.  Let’s start off with you telling me a little bit about yourselves!
Jane: Would you like some more tea?
Uhm. No thank you.  The cup you gave me just moments ago with the fresh baked scones is excellent.
John: There’s nothing to tell really. I’m living the dream in the corporate life and I come home to a beautiful wife, a clean home and excellent children!

Well, it all seems pretty excellent.  So tell me, what brought you to Midnight Hollow? It seems a little dark for your sunny family.
Jane: *a little frantically* Are you sure you wouldn’t like that tea?
Joseph: *Gets up angrily, walks out of the house and slams the door*
Jenn: *Sits quietly and stares ahead with an eerie blank expression*
James: *Giggles and plays happily in the corner*
John: Uh. Heh. You know. Just a change of scenery. You never know where the winds will take you and all that.
Right.

…

So how about a tour of the house?
John: You know, it’s clear that Jane isn’t feeling too well. I think it’s time for you to go.

Simified Interviews SimGuruGrant

0

Source: Simified

During SimsCamp, I was given the opportunity to get all of the questions sent in by you, the readers, answered. I sat down with SimGuruGrant between all of the hustle and bustle and the awesome demos of The Sims 4 to get the questions answered. Below are the questions in no particular order and his responses based on how I remember him answering them. I only summarized what he said; I didn’t write his responses in full, so that I could save time. Thank you so much to SimGururGrant for sitting down with me to get all of these answered!

Simified: What are the Life Stages in The Sims 4? Are there any new ones?
SimGuruGrant: The Sims 4 will have all of the same life stages as previous games, Baby, Toddler, Child, Teen, Young Adult, Adult, and Elder. There are no new life stages coming at this time.

Simified: Will there be Seasons or any kind of weather in The Sims 4 base game?
Grant: With The Sims 4 base game we are focusing on gameplay and Sims themselves to make it a great experience. Weather is something we’d like to have in the base game, but right now, with The Sims 4, weather and seasons will not be present in the base game.

Simified: Will there be an online store, like The Sims 3 Store, in The Sims 4?
Grant: The game is still in a pre-alpha state and we have not reached this point in development so I cannot comment on this.

Simified: Will Sims be able to have and own cars? Will cars in The Sims 4 have functions similar to The Sims 2 (opening doors, etc.) or will they be like The Sims 3?
Grant: Sims will definitely be able to own and have cars! As far as how they will function, I cannot comment on that yet. I do know that opening doors, like in The Sims 2, would require a lot from our animations team, so this may or may not happen.

The Sims 4: Nick Corea On Create A Sim

0

Wow! I can’t believe it’s already September. Hard to believe that it’s already been three weeks since we were in Germany revealing The Sims 4 to the world!

TheSims4_1

My favorite reveal to date has been the unveiling of the completely rebuilt The Sims 4 Create A Sim which we showed off at gamescom. In case you missed the news, it’s now more powerful and intuitive than ever before and allows you to create Sims in any likeness you wish. I personally can’t wait to create friends and family members with more authenticity and accuracy than I’ve ever been able to achieve before. And lest I forget to mention the wonderful and amazing things I’ll make them do for my in-game Sim. I’m already imagining my in-game family and friends cooking dinner for me and abiding by the wants and demands that I will place on them. Mwahaha.

I know there are tons of questions out there about Create A Sim from fans, so I decided to ask Designer Nick Corea to sit down and give me the what’s-what on what makes Create A Sim in The Sims 4 so new and exciting.

SimGuruRaeEliz: So what’s new about this Create A Sim and why should we be excited?

Nick Corea: One sentence: You get to the fun faster!

SimGuruRaeEliz: OK, so what does that mean?

Corea: Simple. It means that Create A Sim has been completely revolutionized. Gone are the days of detached sliders. There’s no more guess work while inching a slider along to try and perfect that Grecian nose or master those big doe eyes. Now you can shape and mold your Sim just like an artist, by pushing and pulling directly on a Sim’s body and face. It is as if you are the artist and your mouse is your paint brush.

SimGuruRaeEliz: Can you walk us through the process of creating your own Sim in the new tool?

Corea: You get started in Create A Sim by selecting from a range of body shapes and faces. Once you’ve found a Sim that fits your vision, the real fun begins. Nearly every point on a Sim’s body and face can be fine-tuned. Imagine being able to look in a mirror and push and pull on your foot to create a desired foot size. It’s that easy.

SimGuruRaeEliz: Wait! Foot size?

Corea: Yes! The Sims 4 now allows you to adjust the size of your Sim’s feet. There are tons of new points on a Sim that can be directly manipulated. Some of our favorites include: chest, shoulders, thighs and, you guessed it, feet! In addition to the new manipulation points that can be adjusted on Sims, you can now select different facial structures for your Sims’ faces – allowing you to create Sims that authentically represent different ethnicities. It’s now easier than ever to sculpt the Sim of your imagination.

 TheSims4_2

SimGuruRaeEliz: Or my future digital boyfriend? Eh!? TMI? Ok, but surely there’s more to it than that though. What about outfitting your Sim?

Corea: Well, we’ve been listening to your feedback and we’ve added a lot of great new ways to customize your Sim’s style and fashion. For example, in The Sims 4 you can add a hat to whatever hairstyle you like. Yep! No longer will your Sim be stuck with a hatless hair-do.

SimGuruRaeEliz: As a Simmer who has her share of bad hair days, I am beyond elated.

Corea: Simmer down there, SimGuruRaeEliz. There’s more to share! Additionally, we’ve added some really cool tech that improves the pairing of your Sim’s boots and pants. Now, skinny pants will be tucked into boots! And if you love those boots but want to dress your Sim in flared pants, those pants will automatically adjust to cover the boots to create a desirable look and style for your Sim.

SimGuruRaeEliz: If only my fashion was that easy to fix. Where’s my Create A Sim in real life?

Corea: We’re working on it!

SimGuruRaeEliz: With all this talk of new, new and more new, I’m curious if anything stayed the same. Is there is still an option to set traits and quickly create pre-made Sims?

Corea: Selecting your Sims’ traits is definitely still in The Sims 4. But there’s more than just that! In Create A Sim, you can now select a Sim’s walk style to go along with their personality, or not –you decide. Pre-made Sims still exists but have been improved. There’s a new feature called ‘Smart Randomization’ where individual parts of the Sim can be randomized. For instance, if you love everything about your Sim but are having trouble picking the right hair, you can now freeze all areas of your Sim except the hair and scroll through a series of options until you find the right one.

SimGuruRaeEliz: One last question for you. What’s your favorite part of Create A Sim?

Corea: There’s no question about it! I’m the most excited about being able to directly manipulate my Sims –it’s so easy and fun! Oh and the broad range of ethnic diversity is also something I’m very excited about as well. And I can’t wait to see what players are going to do with the facial structures.

TheSims4_3

Thanks for taking the time to speak with us, Nick. You took the words right out of my mouth!

We know you have a ton of questions about Create A Sim so be on the lookout for when we reveal more information on a Sims’ lifecycles and their genetics. And get excited because makeup and accessories are now smarter, too! Now to find a way to create a ‘Smart Randomization’ in my real life. Anyone want to help a fellow Simmer out?
