Our Review of The Sims 4 SpongeBob’s House Kit
I should probably start off by clarifying that I am by no means a SpongeBob fan. That isn’t to say I don’t enjoy it; I just didn’t grow up watching it. Here in the U.K., we could only access Nickelodeon if we had SKY TV (a cable package), so SpongeBob was beyond my reach. However, what I don’t enjoy is The Sims 4 SpongeBob’s House Kit. Brand collaborations only work for me if they have true seamless integration.
This isn’t the first time we’ve had a branded pack. In The Sims 2, we had both the H&M and IKEA Stuff Packs that offered new clothing and furniture, respectively. Both of these packs are fondly remembered now; at the time, those packs were slammed for being aimless cashgrabs. Will the SpongeBob’s House Kit be remembered in the same way? I highly doubt it.

For me, the marker of a good Kit is the versatility of the Build-Buy or Create-A-Sim items included. When a catalogue of items is tied too heavily to a theme, or contains a limited number of swatches, I lose interest. Neither of the recent SpongeBob Kits could be tied closer to a specific theme. Outside of a nautical restaurant build, or a background for a SpongeBob-themed Tumblr look-book, I can’t see these objects being of much use. Another collaboration with IKEA or a similar furniture brand would receive a warmer welcome from me. As I said, I’m looking for versatility.
On the other hand, Kits are the perfect home for a brand collaboration with an intellectual property such as SpongeBob. Kits were launched with the intention of providing players with optional bite-sized pieces of content for a low price, as a home for themes and items that would not integrate well in larger packs. And thank goodness it is a Kit. While a Bikini Bottom world would be fun to explore, it would only be fun to explore for a day, and then it would never see me return. It would almost certainly join the low ranks of Batuu from the Sims 4 Journey to Batuu Game pack.

Despite not having much VERSATILITY (Today’s keyword), the quality of the meshes and textures cannot be understated. As each item is based on an existing item in SpongeBob’s home, each object has to be crafted with precision, while also blending in with The Sims 4’s art style. The variety of swatches was also unexpected. Since 1999, the general public has had a standardised concept of SpongeBob’s house, so adding new colour swatches is tough work. A nice touch is the addition of swatches that resemble the DoodleBob art style from the episodes “FrankenDoodle” and “Doodle Dimension”, in which DoodleBob is created by a magic pencil that brings doodles to life.

While a SpongeBob fan may find a short burst of entertainment from either of the SpongeBob Kits, it is clear that The Sims 4 SpongeBob’s House Kit has very little appeal to the average Simmer. After writing this review, exploring the swatches, and taking a few screenshots, I find it unlikely that I will ever use these items again. For a higher asking price of $6.99 / £6.49, you aren’t getting anything extra besides a cash-grab brand deal. But hey, at least Katy Perry hasn’t made her return… yet!

not to cap for what is a bit of a ridiculous kit, i do think you could actually integrate some of these swatches into some of the sulani build swatches nicely. i also LOVE that there’s so much color because we get so many of the same color swatches for building, especially things leaning into neutral and pastel so it is nice to see vibrant colors. i don’t buy dlc for sims anymore between their partnership with cursedforge and now the buyout, but i do think this kit has a lot more charm and while it’s not the MOST versatile, i think that a good, creative build can be made with this without it screaming spongebob.
Yes! I totally agree about the colour and so many packs have the same old objects and clothing, but this is something new, something crazy, reminds me of sims 1
Perfect. I was thinking that some of these would probably be just fine in a nautical themed restaurant or room. I’m glad I’m not alone as a builder/building enjoyer.
Am i the only one who loves this? Not only is it super useful for my medival play, it’s also so much fun to pretend I’m in Bikini Bottom, making up my own bikini bottom stories. There’s is heart in this, you can see it in the way the item descriptions reference different episodes, it’s actually so heartwarming. I am definitely a fan of SpongeBob and will be getting the bundle and I’m sure there’s plenty other SpongeBob fans who will find this fun.
So much of it reminds me of 2000s cgi
As soon as you put any of these items in your house it immediately stands out as the focal point. It’s so cartoony compared to the rest of the games aesthetic, which was already cartoony but this dives in with no hesitation. Id rather these be CC than a kit. It’s a turn off to see these branded collabs, feels like Fortnite with all these features and quite frankly it’s not helping The Sims franchise.
SpongeBob? Yuck. Even my youngest brother who was the right demographic when the show came out has hated SpongeBob from the get-go.
“Ohh, who watch this trash under the sea? Not Mary CrabPants!”
I absolutely adore SpongeBob, though I prefer the older seasons to what is now, I still enjoy what it is now. I think these items will be difficult to fit in to most regular builds outside of fun and flashy things, but I am excited to make a kids rooms that show their love of SpongeBob like I did. I had a SpongeBob body pillow growing up. A long yellow fuzzy thing with just his face in the center. Real strange thing, but I loved it. When hottopic was selling those bags that looked like the krusty krab kiddy meal box, I wanted one so badly! I missed out… SpongeBob is such a nostalgia hit for me. As a fan, I truly love this and think it’d be fun to see more collab kits. Not expansion packs, game packs, or even stuff packs… Just kits. It’d be so fun! Yeah, definitely not for everyone though.
Another nothing-new kit
