The Sims 4: Family Trees ARE BACK!

Family Trees Blog

Can you believe it? This week marks the 15 year anniversary of The Sims™. This is a massive milestone, not just for us in the studio but for all of our players, many of whom have shared this journey from that very first day. We will be celebrating throughout the month of February, but what better way to kick off than by talking about a much-requested feature that we are bringing to The Sims 4 today.

Genealogy is essential for legacy and family players to fully appreciate the scope of their games. For all those players who lovingly document every generation of their Sims, print out their family trees, and keep tracking of the complex relationships that develop, Genealogy is an incredibly valuable tool.

Let’s take a look at a Sim family you might see in the game.

TS4_440_GENEALOGY_1k_White

Now, with this feature, you’ll be able to look at your Sim’s family history, including brothers and sisters, mothers, fathers, grandparents (and some greats, and great greats, etc.), step relationships (like Step-Parent), half relationships (like Half-Sibling), and of course, Spouses.

After you download the most recent The Sims 4 update, you can find this in Live Mode by opening the Simology Panel (or hit the Y key).

Then, click Show House’s Genealogy.

TS4_Geneaolgy_Panel_New

Boom! There’s the whole family. You can now view and track the vast relationships you’ve accumulated in your Sims’ lifetimes. Who is related to whom? Which child came from which grandfather? It’s all there for you.

TS4_457_GENEALOGY_1_001b

Let us think of a traditional story, that demonstrates the value of Genealogy.

In the beginning, Malcom meets Beatrice. They wed and soon have three strapping sons: Pablo, Paulo, and Steve.

Pablo fell in love with a lad named Steve, who was often confused with the brother Steve. They adopted three children, one of whom is also called Steve. That’s three Steve’s in one family. Now, using Genealogy, you can easily know which Steve you are referring to.

Paulo became entranced with Lettucia, whose family name was Crisp. Lettucia had a fine daughter from a previous tryst, Tomata. Though he was fatherly to her, Genealogy helps us know that Paulo is her Step-Father.

Finally, Steve (yes, the original Steve) met Jane. They fell in love in the deepest way and were inseparable. They married and soon had a lovely daughter, Jean. Jean was beautiful, with curls of red. Unfortunately, tragedy befell the household and Jane died too soon. After years of grieving, Steve met Janie. The irony was not lost at all by anyone. Janie and Steve had a daughter Joan to properly confuse everyone.Genealogy shows Joan is in fact Jean’s half-sister.

So, there you have it. A quick introduction to Genealogy. We look forward to seeing what our legacy and family players do with the tool. Don’t forget to share your stories on our forums.

Happy Simming!

It Started with a Toilet
The first object ever created for The Sims was a toilet featured in the 1993 prototype. A variety of ways to interact with the toilet were introduced, from using it to cleaning it. According to the team, it was also the only object in the original game that different genders used differently—male Sims tended to leave the seat up!

When is a Language not a Language?
Sims speak Simlish, an expressive emotion-filled language that defies translation. In creating Simlish, the development team experimented with fractured Ukrainian and Tagalog, the language of the Philippines. Inspired by the code talkers of WWII, The Sims creator Will Wright also suggested Navajo. Over the years, fans have learned to recognize some words like Dag Dag for hello and nooboo for baby. My personal favorite is Sul Sul.

Funny Money
Sims have their own form of currency called Simoleons. The currency originated way back in early eighteenth-century Britain, where sixpence were often slangily called a Simon. Simon mixed with the much more valuable French gold coins called Napoleons became Simoleons!

Play it your Way
The appeal of The Sims is that there is no “right way” to play. Some players spend all their time building cool houses or following the personal lives of their Sims, while others like to create chaos wherever they go. Are you one of those players? If you have ever trapped your Sim in a room without a door, then the answer is probably yes!

Before they were Stars
The Sims has always sought out rising musical talent. Paramore, Katy Perry, Lily Allen, Fun, Bastille plus many others all recorded tracks in Simlish just as they were on the brink of mega-stardom. Wonder who the next megastar will be?

Marc Apablaza, Senior Character Designer for The Sims 4, has shared some concepts and in game models he made. What’s interesting is that none of these concepts have been released for The Sims 4 yet, although the Alien Costume has been teased by The Sims Team today. Does this mean we’ll get Aliens in The Sims 4 sooner than expected?

The Sims 4 Mod: Auto-Save

2

This Mod has been brought to you by Mod The Sims member – temptest!

This mod makes Sims 4 save the game every sim-day. Saves are made at the given hour and use rotating slots. With default settings, the game is saved every day at 5 AM, and uses 7 rotating slots. This actually gives you 5 weeks of backup saves, because Sims keeps up to 4 backups of every slot. The mod keeps its settings between game reloads.

The Sims 4 Program: Trait & Aspiration Randomizer

Sims 4 Trait and Aspiration Randomizer!

A little program I built for those times when you can’t seem to create new and interesting sim-personalities…

I am in no way an expert at Visual Basic or programming so I apologize if you encounter any bugs/glitches!

There is a known “bug” that I cannot fix, and that is that sometimes you’ll get two of the same traits, which is why i included the separate randomizer buttons to get rid of duplicate traits.

Features:

– Save Trait/Aspiration combos

– Allows you to randomize from all base game traits/aspirations + the “Squeamish” trait in OR.

Outdoor Retreat: Your Vacation Has Ended

Your Vacation Has Ended

night

It’s your final night in Granite Falls. What will you do now? The answer is actually quite simple.

You bring the forest with you.

That is, if you even decide to leave in the first place. If you’ve got the cash, you can continue extending your vacation indefinitely to the point that returning home would feel like the vacation. So don’t worry about rushing that bug collection of yours, or snagging every fish, or identifying every plant. If you’ve got the simoleons, you’ve got the time.

thing

For those who do return home, whatever the reason may be, thankfully the phrase, “take only pictures, leave only footprints” doesn’t apply to your trips to Granite Falls. Here are some ways you can enjoy the beauty of nature back home.

Display Your Trip

fish

Go ahead, brag about that awesome mountain lionfish you hooked under the depths of the waterfall. Whether you mount it or make a pet out of it, you’ll never forget that day you caught it. And you shouldn’t.

Are you more of a bug person? Fill your house with more insects than anyone is comfortable living with. Even you. You earned that right when you spent countless days and nights hunting them.

A house can finally be a home for nature lovers.

Bring Nature To You

plants

You survived a trip to the wilderness, that doesn’t mean you want to do it again. So instead, bring the plants to you. There are plenty of perks in growing Granite Fall’s foliage at your home.

  • Diverse gardens always look the best.
  • You’ll always have access to the herbalism plants.
  • Nasty neighbor? Harvest a fresh noxious elderberry from them.

Having these plants in your backyard is much more convenient than having to plan an entire vacation to harvest some whenever the need arises. No one has the time for that. And have you seen your bills lately? No one has the money either.

But be careful when transferring the plants from one area to another. These plants aren’t just pretty. For instance, you don’t want to break out in a rash from the poison fireleaf.

Enjoy a Backyard Staycation

camp

Sick of the dusty, musty indoors and need a breath of fresh air? Too broke to afford a vacation? Work breathing down your neck but the outdoors is whispering in your ear? Not a problem.

Unpack your tent and fill the coolers, it’s staycation time.

Not only is camping in your backyard a great experience, it’s the perfect introduction to the outdoors for children, city folk, and the squeamish indoorsy types. If you set up your backyard to reflect the absolute perfect camping trip, who knows what types of sims you’ll get to come with you on your next excursion to the wilderness.

The greatest part about a staycation? No bear scares.

Hopefully now you won’t be too bummed about your vacation ending because you realize the trip is never truly over. Although, that doesn’t mean you can’t still count down the days until your next trip. Nothing at home can beat the true camping experience.

The Sims 4: Free Content Updates will no longer be announced in advance!

0

SimGuruBChick mentioned on The Sims Forums that Free Content Updates for The Sims 4 will no longer be announced in advance like they were in October when Ghosts, Pools and new Careers were announced simultaneously.

This means that The Sims Team can surprise you anytime with free new content!

We announce Outdoor Retreat was coming back in December but I can understand that not everyone may have seen that. With regard to future plans, we can’t really comment on specifics at this time. What I can tell you is that free content updates will not get announced in advance. Paid content updates, such as Game Packs and Expansion Packs will be announced in advance. You can find out more information in our new Latest News section of the forum.

The Sims Blog: Granite Falls Insect Collection Guide

0

Insect collecting in The Sims 4 Outdoor Retreat can be tons of fun, but also very challenging. You will need a sharp eye and some quick clicking. You can go to the Ranger Center in the forest in Granite Falls to see many of the species that can be found. Once you’ve collected some bugs, there are lots of things you can do! Here are some tips:

Tip #1: Insects make great decorations in your home.  Once insects are collected they are automatically placed in terrariums. It is fantastic to see these little creatures crawling around and offering tons of viewing entertainment.

InsectBlog01

Tip #2: Insects are tasty food items! We have some new Cooking recipes in The Sims 4 Outdoor Retreat. Roast a tasty beetle over the open flames on the campfire, or prepare Shish Kebabs or Gumbo with insects on the grill. A delicious dish will fill your Sims’ bellies and increase their happiness for hours.

InsectBlog02

Tip #3: Have you tried the new Herbalism skill yet? Your Sims can create Herbal Remedies using insects and plant parts. One of the basic Herbalism remedies is the Sadness Alleviation Lotion – it requires two Elderberry parts and a Firefly. You can apply it to lift the spirits of melancholy Sims! My particular favorite Remedy is Fireleaf Extract, made with Fire Ants. Yup, it makes Sims itch all over!

Tip #4: Sims need to be wary of some insects. Your Sim may receive a negative buff like Foul Stench or Bug Bite! If your Sim has the Squeamish trait, collecting insects will be even harder. Squeamish Sims can become uncomfortable around anything dirty and can get nauseated by these creepy crawlies!

InsectBlog03

Locations

Granite Falls is comprised of three neighborhoods, each containing unique insects. Your Sims start in the campground area, can travel to the Granite Falls forest, but the third neighborhood, an isolated area in the mountains, will require some exploring to find. Don’t forget, whatever insects you find you can sell for Simoleons!

Campground:

Mountains:

InsectBlog06

Tip #5: It will take some sharp eyes to see the little critters! Most of them can be seen during the day, but fireflies and the mysterious Will-O-Wisp can only be seen at night. When you explore, stop regularly and take a 360 degree pan of the area around you. That’s a good way to spot the hard-to-find insects.

InsectBlog07

Tip #6: When wandering the woods insects can be flying through the air, like the majestic Monarch Butterfly, or crawling on the ground, like Ladybugs. Some are harder to see then others. The Walking Stick is especially difficult to spot because his narrow body is the same color as fallen pine needles.

InsectBlog08

InsectBlog09

Tip #7:  Sometimes, insects stick together. Catching insects is useful, since more specimens might emerge once you catch one.

InsectBlog10

Collections & Achievements: Insects have a new collection with a new achievement related to it! Under Household Collections, there is an insect tab highlighting the insects you have found and how many you still need to collect. There are 21 insects to find in The Sims 4 Outdoor Retreat!

InsectBlog11

Tip #8: Did you know, if you collect all 21 Insects and the 5 new Fish in Granite Falls you unlock the Critter Catcher Achievement?

Creepy and crawly or weird and fascinating, however you feel about insects we hope you have fun in Granite Falls!
