The Sims 4 Cottage Living: Official Description + Key Features

8

The Sims Team has released the official description + Key Features for The Sims 4 Cottage Living Expansion Pack – hitting the stores July 22nd, 2021!

Delight in the quaint charm of The Sims 4 Cottage Living Expansion Pack* with animal friends, garden-to-table meals, and a close-knit community. At home, cook with the family using the freshest ingredients. Explore the forest to befriend woodland creatures or forage for food, or head to town to meet the locals. Whether Sims are hugging a cow, making friends (or enemies) with their chickens, or growing the biggest vegetables around, the countryside is abundant with new experiences and ways to connect with the world around them.

Raise or Befriend Animals

The cottage cow provides fresh (flavored!) milk for everyone while chickens lay eggs in the coop. Gather llama wool for crafts, but beware of mischievous foxes – the pesky critters love eggs! In the forest, keep an eye out for wildlife like rabbits and birds to earn their trust for occasional gifts and help in the garden.

Live Off the Land

Make cooking and gardening fun for the whole family. New recipes and Lot Challenges require fresh ingredients for each meal. Whether Sims grow their own produce, visit the village market, or forage in the wild, fresh is best! Up for a challenge? Try growing oversized crops to enter into the competition at the Finchwick Fair.

Embrace Village Life

Henford-on-Bagley is a cozy village where everyone knows everyone. So pack a picnic basket and cross-stitch hoop, and head down to The Gnome’s Arms pub to kick back with the locals after a long day. Earn unique gifts and learn about the town’s lore from neighbors, or participate in the Finchwick Fair to show off your most prized cow or chicken.

The Sims 4 Cottage Living: Official Reveal Trailer

This Post Puts The Sims 4 Dream Home Decorator Into Perspective

Since Dream Home Decorator launched, online fan spaces have been flooded with frustrated Simmers complaining that the game pack makes no sense; how are they supposed to design a snowboarding, rock-climbing, pipe organ themed bathroom?! Why do clients give them likes and dislikes that are completely unrelated to home design?

Well, it’s because that’s not far from the truth of what real interior designers have to deal with. Any avid viewer of interior design shows knows that designers will often try to find out the clients’ hobbies and lifestyle as well as their visual preferences in order to design a space that both looks nice and is functional for that person’s lifestyle. They also have to contend with multiple clients in the same house whose preferences clash with each other. Their job is to sort through that conflicting information and gently steer the clients in a different direction if they’re going way off course. That’s the whole challenge of being a designer.

A reddit post by Intern_Waffle posted in the /r/Sims4 reddit sums up exactly this.

Intern_Waffle states what should have been obvious to everyone from the very beginning. Dream Home Decorator is a game pack. Therefore, you actually have to play the game to do well in it. People who rush into renovations as soon as they fill those little bubbles with likes and dislikes are going to struggle because they didn’t bother to play the game. They didn’t spend some extra time trying to find out other likes and dislikes or suggesting that the client give them different preferences that are easier to work with. It’s all about navigating the game the way a real designer would navigate their day-to-day job.

That’s not to say the pack doesn’t have bugs. Things like the reveal slideshow not playing, gigs abruptly ending with no pay, and Sims not being prompted to go to their gigs at the right time are all problematic glitches that The Sims Team needs to prioritize fixing as soon as possible but unrelated or conflicting client preferences are not one of those bugs. They are part of the game and if players actually take the time to play the game to its fullest potential, they’ll find that Dream Home Decorator is one of the most immersive and true-to-life game packs released to date.

Creator Spotlight: CokiCreative

CokiCreative is a creator and long-time The Sims player who I stumbled across on Instagram one evening recently. Better know as Alana, you can find her creations showcased on Twitter, YouTube and her own website. So there are plenty of places to keep up to date with her content.

I was  scrolling through a few different hashtags relating to The Sims when I discovered Alana‘s creations. There was something about her builds that just caught my attention. I loved the sheer amount of detail in each build and how there wasn’t one corner that was left unfurnished and everything just works together perfectly. Alana has a variety of different builds spanning many different themes including traditional, modern and fantasy themes and that’s before I even get to talking about the Sims she has created!

With a variety of speed builds, and cinematic shorts shared on both YouTube and Instagram, there’s plenty to check out! You’ll also find build challenges and even a cute game based off of the popular Where’s Waldo called Where’s Wendy that can be found on Alana’s website.

I Became an Interior Decorator and Saved a Dysfunctional Family from Ruin

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from becoming an Interior Decorator in this game, it’s that you’re not just an Interior Decorator. Sometimes, you’re also a marriage councilor, personal therapist, part-time nanny, and even the saviour of a completely dysfunctional family on the brink of being torn apart.

Yes, that is what my first day on the job as an Interior Decorator was like.

I Became an Interior Decorator and Saved a Dysfunctional Family from Ruin

My first gig was for the Lobo household, who wanted a new walk-in closet. They had a whopping §7,400 budget for just a closet but hey, that’s good news for me! I head out to my gig expecting to arrive at Diego Lobo’s swanky Uptown apartment in San Myshuno. Instead, I end up in the dingy Spice District in a cramped, one bedroom apartment. Apparently, Diego married Katrina Caliente and instead of her moving in with him, they downsized. A lot. Okay then…

The moment I arrive, I am bombarded by a small army of cats. I guess Diego and Katrina are cat people. Me too! They also have a baby girl in a bassinet next to their bed whom I didn’t even notice was there until I received a notification informing me that she was starving and about to be taken by social services.

I Became an Interior Decorator and Saved a Dysfunctional Family from Ruin

At this point, I start questioning Diego and Katrina as parents. Not only did they have an extra §7,400 to spend and decided a walk-in closet was more important to have than a nursery for their newborn baby, but apparently they don’t feed their baby, either. They… do remember they have a baby, don’t they? I mean, it’s an honest question! Maybe they mistook her for one of their seven hundred cats. Mistakes happen, is all I’m saying!

So even though they hired me to be a decorator and not a nanny, I go over there and feed their baby for them, then get to work. I find out Diego and Katrina are into cosmolux decor and the colour orange. Okay. Kinda weird, but doable. I can work with that. I do my thing, shoo the clients away and now I have to make some big decisions about how to redecorate the space.

I Became an Interior Decorator and Saved a Dysfunctional Family from Ruin

Even though they wanted a walk-in closet, I wasn’t permitted to add any walls and the small apartment only had one bedroom; however, it was a pretty large room that could easily have a portion of it sectioned off. Since $7k is an insanely large budget for a closet and since they obviously were struggling to find a place to put their daughter, I figured I’d redo the whole bedroom area for them. I used a divider to separate the walk-in closet from the rest of the room and made a quaint little nook for the baby in the small octagonal section of the room. Maybe if their daughter had a more prominent place in the house, they’d remember to feed her.

So I work my magic and give Diego and Katrina the orange cosmolux bedroom/walk-in closet of their dreams. When they return, they are both so happy with my renovation that they burst into joyful tears and hug me. The baby even seems pretty happy. It felt like one of those moments on those feel-good design shows where the clients reveal how much their family has been struggling and tearfully exclaim that this renovation has changed their lives for the better.

All in a day’s work, friends. Not only did I give the client what they asked for (and more), I paid attention to the family’s needs and areas of life where they might need some extra help and sought to solve those problems for them with my design. Now Diego and Katrina have the closet they wanted, a more appropriate place for their daughter to sleep, and a place for themselves to enjoy in their favourite style.

Will my design inspire Diego and Katrina to become better parents? Who knows but for today, at least, I saved a family from being broken up and gave them a new environment to help them foster a fresh start, which to be honest, is way above my pay grade as an Interior Decorator.
