SimCity Blog: The Extended Worker Data Mod and more

0

Hello again, Mayors – I’m Guillaume Pierre, the Lead Gameplay Scripter and a designer on SimCity. You may have read the recently published SimCity Modding Policy postedhere and have wondered how to make Mods yourself.

Today I’m going to talk about a few Mods I’ve been working on. I hope this helps you make your own. Please note, these Mods are to be used strictly at your own risk, as they don’t go through a testing process like an official game update would. As you may already know, there is no official SimCity Mod tool set, so I’ve used a third-party service,Oppie’s SimCityPak tool*.

The Extended Worker Data Mod

Have you ever wondered how many jobs of each wealth level a work building supports? This Mod adds three bars to the civic, commercial and industrial buildings rollovers that gives you just that information. It will also help you make informed decisions in regards to zoning for residential buildings.

ExtendedWorkerData

In order to make this Mod, I created a new piece of UI with a matching data binding function. Fortunately, there was already an example similar to what I wanted to do in the MegaTower Office level rollover, so my first task was to copy the layout with the three bars into a new file.

I then looked up how the worker data was fed into the bars in the rollover, and copied that piece of JavaScript into another file. Because of the way the UI is packed in the game, I had to find a JavaScript file that is packed by itself rather than add the function to the main (and very long) UI file. To do this, I opened the Mayor Rating UI file and pasted the code at the bottom of it. I renamed the original “kSkyTowerLevelOfficePopulation” function to “kWorkers” and encoded it to “0xe15027f1”.

Finally, I went through all the units in the game that have workers (I actually looked for the code for “kMaintenance” and combed through the results) and added the new rollover item’s ID to their list of extended rollover data.

The Closer Road Guides Mod

This Mod tightens the distance tuning for road guides, so streets and avenues get placed closer to each other when using guides. As a result, there is very little empty space in the back of each building, so you can get more houses into your city.

You may not want to use this Mod if you turn off guides for curved roads though, as you might not get as many buildings developing.

CloserRoadGuides

In order to make this Mod I opened the SimCity game package file and exported a few files, including the global road template which is used by the avenues, and the narrow street definition files. Then I lowered the value of the guide distance (property ID: 0x0ec367af) and saved the files as a new package.

The Purple Line in Industrial Tech Map Mod

This Mod takes the pink and purple lines that go from colleges and universities and directs them to factories and certain power plants that appear in the Industrial Tech Map. This is helpful to predict which factories are going to get skill first, and which ones are going to upgrade next.

PurpleLine

In the code, these type of lines are called “pipe overlays”, as they are a visualization definition for agents that use the “pipe” handler. Adding the line that goes from the college to medium tech factories, and the line from the university to high tech factories was straightforward. I added a new property array listing them in the data map file and that took care of it.

The other lines were a little more complex to get working. First I had to create new pipe overlay files for the lines coming from the college and university to the lower tech factories, and to power plants by copying the original pipe overlay files. Then I made these new overlay files point to their correct pipe sinks. Finally, I added references to the new files in the same array as the original overlay files in the data map file so they all show up in game and provide context as designed.

That’s it for this time! I can’t wait to see what kind of amazing Mods you’re going to create. As always, I’m available to answer questions regarding this blog in the comments section below, on Twitter at @MaxisGuillaume, and in the Community-Generated Content section of our forums (http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/forums/show/4227.page).

Polygon: Why multitasking in The Sims 4 makes characters feel ‘more believable’

0

A sim’s ability to perform more than one task at any given time helps make the character feel more natural, according to software engineer Peter Ingebretson during a recent Game Developers Conference 2014 panel.

In “Concurrent Interactions in The Sims 4,” Ingebretson explained that Maxis’ goal with the upcoming game was to make it “the most natural iteration” of the series. Part of this required implementing one of the series’ most frequently requested features: multitasking.

ts4_live_2

“When we looked at the sims and tried to decide what would make them feel more natural and more believable, one thing that we realized is that in the real world, people do things at the same time all the time,” Ingebretson said. “For instance, people stand around in a bar drinking drinks, sitting down. Sometimes people will stand and sit and talk to each other. It seems very natural when characters in a game can multitask.”

According to the software engineer, multitasking gives the illusion of doing several things at the same time. It requires less complex demands than actually doingseparate, simultaneous behaviors.

“It also turns out that it’s in some ways realistic,” Ingebretson said. “In the real world, people’s brains work this way. There’s a lot of psychological research that shows people multitask by switching between different things.”

Multitasking, however, can be inhibited by several technical of the game, such as how the sim is positioned or what they’re doing with their hands — this could keep a sim from drinking a soda, for example, or change their options when sitting or standing.

The Sims 4 is expected to launch this fall worldwide for Mac and Windows PC.

The Sims 4 – 30 Screens from GDC (Alpha Software)

7

Take a look at some of the screens of The Sims 4 Alpha. These screens were shown on Game Developer Conference for ”Concurrent Interactions in The Sims 4” presentation.

In real life, people often do several things at the same time, but games typically limit agents to performing actions sequentially. For The Sims 4, we developed a system for authoring interactions that allows simulated people (called Sims) to express multiple concurrent behaviors. Interactions are largely data-driven and are defined in terms of constraints, which specify the state a Sim must be in to perform the interaction. Constraints are used to test whether interactions are compatible, and to drive decisions that Sims make about whether, how and where to perform an interaction. This system allows Sims in The Sims 4 to convincingly eat, watch TV, chat with other Sims, express emotion, and perform many more behaviors simultaneously. We believe that this powerful and simple technique could be applied to a similar effect in your game too.

The Sims 4 – Ambient Occlusion and more about Graphics!

0

Back in 2013, SimGuruMeatball spared some time to answer some questions on The Sims 3 Forums about The Sims 4 and it’s graphics. Thanks to Rincon Del Simmer for the find!

If you don’t know what ambient occlusion is, it helps light to break through different surfaces in the game, making the graphics more realistic. Here’s an example video:

Rhedd_V: Sims 4 may have a technically better lighting engine, but that doesn’t make Sims 3’s “crappy” by any means. It’s the only game I know of that has on-the-fly rendered, accurate reflection maps, and realtime ambient occlusion that won’t slow an average computer to a crawl, for instance.

I’d just like to see a Sims 4 screenshot where all of the metal reflections weren’t painted on. Not that any lighting engine is going to make me like those cartoon trees…

SimGuruMeatball: Happy you thought so, but we did not have realtime AO (Ambient Occlusion) on TS3. We do on TS4 though and we do have reflections.

SimGuruMeatball: Design is design. Art is art. Designers do the design. They, with the producers, decide which features go into the game. As head of art I try to make sure that the art looks as good as possible, dependent on the features and needs of the overall project. Polish is done throughout a project all up to the point it gets sent for final submission.

bethyGrace: Cool 283a16da79f3aa23fe1025c96295f04f Thanks for sharing. For what its worth, what I’ve seen of the world looks beautiful. The sims I might need to get used to, but another game is another game right… its going to be different! It must be crazy in that studio at the moment. Do you know if we will be seeing more from the game soon?

SimGuruMeatball: Thanks! The game do look different, we have a very distinct art style. We didn’t really get one together properly on TS3, but on TS4 a lot of work has been put in to get things looking cohesively. I understand that the art style might not appeal to everyone, but saying that it is lower quality than TS3 is just wrong. We don’t have lower resolution textures or assets, we actually have a lot of graphical improvements.

Oh, it’s definitely crazy over here 3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad But I wouldn’t want it any other way! I am unfortunately not privy to upcoming press releases, those things are way above my head.

Ze_Blue_Panda: To me it’s just a different art style of hair. Like it or not, I don’t think it’s badly made or anything. Simple yeah but just another style.

SimGuruMeatball: Correct. Just because things are simplified and stylized doesn’t mean that things are lower res or of poor quality. It’s a style choice, not quality.
