Future Homes and Neighborhoods
Now that your Sim has a steady income, or maybe been a little lucky and won big with the lottery , they should consider making a permanent stake in Oasis Landing by buying a future home. There are a few different locations in town to live each with their own personality.
If a fast paced life is what you’re seeking, purchase a home in the Downtown District. Resting in the reservoir, surrounded by water, this is prime real estate for residents of Oasis Landing. Just outside your door is a ZEPHYR station which you can take to any corner of town, or hop in a Taxi to take a trip to the nearby Import Gallery, Sam’s Synth’d Staples outdoor cafeteria or visit the HoloVenture Theater and catch a futuristic holo show with your friends.

If the frenetic life of downtown is overwhelming, consider the basic Residential District which is home to modernist future homes. All the conveniences of Advanced Technology are present but the homes are conveniently removed from the hustle and bustle of the Downtown District. The neighborhood is home to the Playful Public Pool, Water Werks Park and Loel’s Lounge. A hop, skip and a jump away is the Derelict Beach, and while you can’t swim on this lot as the water is now wasteland, you can certainly relax and soak in some sun and order a synthesized drink from the SAM-7 Drink Synthesizer Unit to quench your thirst while you gaze out over the dried up ocean.

Live like its 1962 in the Mining District. A getaway high in the mountains, this neighborhood offers none of the conveniences of future living; instead residents choose to live a simpler lifestyle.  Take a break and fish near the Forgotten Fishing Hole and scenic waterfall or stop by The Mine bar and wet your whistle.

Future Fashion
Are you fond of being a real estate tycoon? With enough simoleons lining your pocket a Sim can purchase the EP-XI Import Gallery (and other lots in the world) where, using the Retail Display Pedestal, a player can fully influence what Sims in Oasis Landing will wear. To purchase this shop just pull out your cell phone, choose Real Estate and Travel Services and Check Real Estate, this will bring up a full listing of purchasable lots in Oasis Landing. Find EP-XI Import Gallery in this list and invest away! When your Sim is at the Import Gallery they will have new interactions with the Clothing Pedestals.  These Clothing Pedestals are by far my favorite feature I’ve ever designed for a Sims expansion. We as a design and production team have been trying to get mannequin displays into the game for a while, but it wasn’t until Into the Future that we were able to find a way around the technical restrictions that these awesome objects presented.

You can purchase the Retail Display Pedestals from Buy Mode and place them on your home lot, or just purchase the Import Gallery and get right to customizing. A Sim can plan outfits for each age and gender. Once you’ve chosen the age and gender you want to customize you’ll go into a Create-A-Sim mode so you can outfit the mannequin in any attire. You’ll have the ability to change all outfits from Everyday, Formal, Sleepwear, Athletic and Swimwear. If you have Seasons installed you’ll also be able to customize the Outerwear category. If you’d like to create some variety within each category you can click the new outfit button and create up to 3 outfits per category, that’s nearly 20 outfits that each age can have available to display on the Clothing Pedestals.

While in the Clothing Pedestal Create-A-Sim, all clothing pieces are available so feel free to mix and match the new clothing from Into the Future and any clothing from previous expansion packs or from The Sims 3 Store to make a fashion statement throughout the entire world of Oasis Landing. After you’ve planned outfits on these pedestals you’ll begin to see Sims in the Import Gallery view and buy your clothing! On the spot they’ll find something they like and immediately change into it. Over time you’ll see your fashions spread throughout the town like never before.
The Gallery lot is available to be created in Edit Town in any world, so go populate all of your custom worlds or home worlds with your very own Import Gallery replete with your own personal styles. If you couple this new lot type with the Barrier to Entry System that comes with Le Cinema Plumbob venue from The Sims 3 Store, your options for creating custom clothing galleries that cater to specific ages or even Supernatural types is as endless as your creativity.

I’ve talked about the basics of living in the future, from starting out at The Community Living Center and using Advanced Technology objects to joining one of the new careers or buying future homes and commercial real estate. Being able to live in the future long term means we needed to reconsider some of the restrictions previously attached to sub-hoods. If you meet someone in Oasis Landing that catches your eye feel free to romance them, go ahead we won’t stop you. Use the new Dip Kiss social to set the mood or literally sweep them off their feet with a Jet Pack Slow Dance or Kiss. When the mood is right take your partner out for a some Jet Pack Woo Hoo and get the I Can Show You The World moodlet. If you are ready to take the big leap, propose to your partner and get married! Yes, you can get married while in Oasis Landing.
 If you’d like to grow your family you can of course Try for Baby anywhere you can normally Woo Hoo, or you can go to the Oasis Landing Community Hospital and use the new Engineer a Baby interaction. You’ll be able to specify the gender, Hair and Eye color as well as their starting traits. The engineered baby will be a spitting image of the two of you. Still not a large enough family, you could always adopt a child from the future!

Now that you’ve got a family you can chose to remain in Oasis Landing and raise them in a community where the conveniences of technology make life a breeze, or you can take them back to the past and introduce them to how it used to be. Of course, all of these changes you’ve made to your family can have a serious impact on your descendants the next time you travel to the future, so don’t be surprised if your entire family lineage is different now that you’ve gone and changed everything.

I’ve really enjoyed working on Into the Future. It offered some unique design challenges with how to handle time travel in a Sims way, and provided me with a way to get mannequins into the game, and finally offer a way for you to keep your Sims in a sub-hood for as long as you like! I always love it when Designer Alan Copeland write blogs for the exciting store releases, but I think he might have outdone himself this week. We’ve teased this all last week, revealed a killer sneak peek, and I know you are all DYING for more (pun intended). See for yourself! This Thursday will be full of tricks and treats! Available on The Sims 3 Store October 17th! 

Ever wonder where the Grim Reaper lives? I have too. He’s such an elusive fellow that we wanted a place where players can always go to look for him, even if their Sim hasn’t gone and kicked the bucket. To get to know Grim on his turf and maybe, just maybe, make a new friend.

See, Grimmy’s not all bad, he’s just got a job to do. Once he’s done working he just wants to go home, kick back, feed the ill-tempered pit monster and play a game of foosball down in the secret crypt just like everyone else. As a matter of fact, he’s a pretty handy guy to know.

With that in mind I’m thrilled to tell you about our spookiest venue yet, Grim’s Ghastly Manor!

Grim’s Ghastly Manor has a few new outfits, an exciting array of beautifully creepy objects and most incredibly the Door of Life and Death where you can summon the Reaper!

The Door of Life and Death really helps you understand that Grim really has a part to play in the circle of life. Sure, he’s there whenever a Sim dies, but if you gather up the tombstone of a Sim that’s left this mortal coil, you can go ask Grim toReincarnate them. Reincarnation isn’t like anything that’s ever been done in the Sims 3 before. The reincarnated Sim isn’t simply brought back to life like they were, they are reawakened as a baby with many of the skills (possibly at a lower level) that they had in their previous life!

Reincarnation can occasionally have some unexpected results, like maybe your Sim will change race, gender… or maybe even species if you have the Pets Expansion Pack installed. But hey, who wouldn’t want to come back as a kitten? And while that baby may start with a glimmer of recognition, you’ll need to rebuild the relationships you had in a whole new way.

If you Reincarnate your Sim you may find that “Mary” is more of a “Bob”, so you can also rename your Sim right at the Door.

But let’s say your Sim doesn’t need anything that heavy and just wanted to chat with Grim about his day? You can just go Call for the Reaper and your Sim will knock on the door and see if he wants to come out and play. If he’s not too busy in the ethereal plane he’ll answer the door and you might become fast friends. However, there’s a slight chance that if he’s busy you might run into his pet pit monster, Emmie, that lives under his doormat. Emmie, isn’t always the most welcoming to new guests, but your Sim might be quick enough to avoid her rather lethal hug. The good news is that Emmie really hates your enemies, paparazzi and zombies. I mean REALLY hates them. So if your Sim is a celebrity just put this on your lot and don’t worry about those pesky shutterbugs. On your next full moon zombies may spawn on the lot, but the Door attracts them like a bug catcher, Emmie pulls them down to her watery abyss and spits them out when they stop acting all zombified.

Does your Sim want a child but doesn’t want to go through all of the hassle of trying to adopt or deal with all of the headache of having a relationship? Well for starters your Sim’s probably a loner, but Grim totally understands your dilemma. Just go knock-knock-knocking on Grim’s Door and he can help your Sim Simulate a Genetic Merger. You get to pick what type of occult you’d like your baby to be (from available installed Expansion Packs) or which Sim you’d like to use the genetic template of and a powerful bolt of lightning comes down to zap your Sim into a truly cryptic pregnancy! “But…” you might ask, “what if my Sim is male?” You think a little thing like gender roles is going to stand in the way of Grim and his mad skills? Hell (or heavens) no! Male Sims may wonder where that extra weight is coming from until their new bundle of joy arrives.

Do you have a Sim who’s so epically good at guitar that they are destined to be a rock legend till the end of time? Nobody wants to lose a Sim that can rock that hard, not even Grim. So when you think your Sim is big and bad enough to challenge the Reaper himself to a Guitar Duel, it’s time to put on your Sim’s big boy pants and see who really knows how to rock.

But you better know what to expect. Grim doesn’t just show up with any guitar, Grim will show up with his enchanted flaming bone guitar that was forged in the fires of Hades, tuned by the angels of heaven and regurgitated by the swamp monster of Antioch. Yeah, you may think your Sim knows how to play, but do they ROCK? If they win, Grim’s gonna give them a free pass for their next reaping courtesy of a Death Flower, but if they lose they might just have to take their chances against a rather tone-deaf Emmie.

The Door of Life and Death also has all of the standard door interactions, so if you want to set it as your front door, slap on some holiday lights, or lock it so only you (and Grim) can use it, you totally can.

Also, all of those new objects I mentioned before? They really are awesome. There’s a new coffin in the secret crypt that’s down below the Manor (this just so happens to be where Grim keeps his foosball table.) There are also some really cool roof sculptures that would go perfect in whatever gothic setting you want to put them in.

Now, to answer some questions from the forums and Twitter:

Q: What type of lot is this? 
A: This is a Graveyard but you can put the Door on any type of lot. Grim’s Ghastly Manor comes on a 50×25 lot, which should fit nicely in place of most graveyards in your game.

Q: Will this kill off all of my Sims? 
A: The good news is that Sims don’t mess with the door much on their own. So you won’t have a Sim who doesn’t have the Guitar skill pick up a guitar for the first time and challenge the Reaper to a duel they will surely lose.

Q: Can playable Ghost Sims bring their own tombstone to Grim to be reincarnated? 
A: No, you’ll need another Sim to do that for you.

Q: What is the skill bar in the image that was posted of Pitty pulling someone down to their demise?
A: In that picture the Sim had just lost a Guitar Duel, so they were still getting a skill bump before they died. This is important in case someone wants to reincarnate them.

Q: Where does the Reaper sleep? 
A: I’ve never seen him sleep, but he has a bed with pink lamb sheets and his upstairs is rather bachelor pad-ish. In the attic are the burned out remains of a nursery hinting to something dastardly from a long time ago.

Q: Is the Reaper playable?
A: No. His job keeps him far too busy for that.

We are less than 24 hours away from this ***** new venue hitting the digital shelf, so I look forward to all of your cool screenshots!

Into the Future Blog Post: Future Living – Part 1

Each time The Sims 3 design team sits down to discuss the next expansion pack or piece of store content,  we often start by talking about what parts of the game could be better. What worked and what didn’t work in previous content? What would we like to do differently if given the chance? With Into the Future, we discussed how well the Visa Points system from World Adventures worked in context with that expansion pack’s content and then talked about how Terms worked with University Life. Would either of those scenarios work with Into the Future?
If there is ever a question on which direction we should take with a design there is always one question I ask myself: “Are we, the design team, providing tools that allow players to tell the story they want, or are we trying to force a specific story onto the player?” To me player freedom is the most important thing I can provide to someone who plays The Sims 3. Once we asked ourselves this question it was apparent the direction we should head, pending any technical restrictions.
Arriving in the Future
 
Unlike Shang Simla, Champs Les Sims, Al Simhara or Sims University, once a Sim arrives in Oasis Landing they can stay there as long as they like. All ages can travel to the future, but babies, toddlers, children and teens must be accompanied by a responsible adult. When you arrive in the future you’ll arrive at Emit Relevart’s Community Living Center. This lot provides a place for visitors of all ages to relax and recharge after a day out in the town.

Our writer’s (Leighanne) sister Stacey found something very interesting. There were lots of speculations about The Sims 4 releasing on March 2014, but now it looks like these speculations are true! In UK Toy/Game store called Smyths, there are placeholder boxes for The Sims 4, including the release date.

The Sims 4 – Improved Camera

SimGuruGraham recently replied to an issue on Mod The Sims, saying that issues with camera that we had in The Sims 3/past Sims games won’t happen again in The Sims 4. Big thanks to HoneyWell’s Sims 4 Blog for finding this!

The Builder: The camera! Seriously, the camera in TS3 sucks when building. It cannot focus properly when you have all floors+roof active. When I colour and build my house, I really prefer having it all walls and floors up, but then the camera flies away so you can’t have your house centered, because it focuses too much on the roof. If I move the camera slightly down, it falls down to the ground instead. There is no in-between.

SimGuruGraham: This constantly bugged me in Sims 3… it was one of the first things I asked them to overhaul when we were building the demo we showed at Gamescom. As things currently stand, the further your camera is zoomed out, the less the camera bounces when moving across different floor levels. Personally I think it feels a lot better in-game now; I hope you’ll agree when you get your hands on it

Last night, Gizmodo got a sneak peek at the new SimCity: Cities of Tomorrow expansion pack due out next month. The eye-popping visuals of the relaunch were covered widely, immediately making a game as easy to discuss for its many frustrations as for its design advances, and we were thus keen to learn how Cities of Tomorrow expansion would continue or depart from the recent refresh.

There was a lot to see—a truly bewildering amount of new content—and an almost impossibly dense web of subsidiary information to take in. They’ve been working on the expansion pack since the re-release, back in February, and, creatively speaking, it shows.

Getting to Know The Sims 4 Producer

Hey everyone! My name is Ryan Vaughan and I‘m a producer for The Sims 4. A lot of you might be wondering what the heck a producer does day-to-day. How do I spend my time in The Sims Studio? And, maybe what my favorite food is? This is my opportunity to let you get to know me and the role I play on The Sims 4 team a bit better.

First, let me say that I’ve actually been working on The Sims for more than six years! It’s gone by pretty fast, but when you truly love what you do, it’s inspiring to come in on a daily basis and have a lot of fun. Don’t get me wrong, all jobs come with their own challenges, but working on The Sims has been incredible.

In The Sims Studio, a producer works with all the different members of the team. We work with artists, computer engineers, designers, QA, other producers, you name it! In the simplest terms, we help keep them on track, hit their schedules, and make sure the game is the best that it can be. Simple task right? It’s actually a lot more than that.

One of the most important jobs of a producer is to ensure that specific features evolve and change from their original design when they don’t end up fitting correctly into the game. We ensure that game features like Create A Sim (which we talked about last week) and Build Mode work in a way that feels right. Games are made of many different parts and finding a balance is one of our most important goals.

Now that I mentioned them, I have to tell you that one of the things I’m most excited about in The Sims 4 is the brand new Create A Sim. Being able to directly manipulate the way my Sim looks (without using sliders) is something I’ve always wanted from the very first time I played The Sims. I cannot wait to finish this game so everyone can enjoy how much fun it is now to create Sims.

I’m also constantly tracking the status of projects, playing the game, and working with my various cross-partner team members. A lot of my job, you see, is being a support system to the team. If a developer has an issue that’s keeping work from getting done, it’s up to a producer to either find a way to get it done, or to find the right person to get it done. People who are good problem solvers make great producers!

My life is not all work. I have a beautiful family that I come home to every night. These moments where I’m unwinding is where I derive a lot of my stories for how I play The Sims. In fact, watching my son build houses out of blocks the other night reminded me a lot of how the new Build Mode works – constructing houses by building individual rooms and shapes. I relish those moments of watching real life at home and then recreating them when I come to work.

That about sums it up. Hope you had a chance to get to know me a bit better.

Oh, and by the way, my favorite food is pizza – no question about that!
