Revisiting The Origins of The Sims Custom Content

I was spending some time a few evening ago downloading some new Custom Content for The Sims 4. While I was browsing through different creators, it got me thinking about how I first discovered custom content back when I was playing The Sims and how blown away I was that it even existed in the first place.

Even now, I can still remember some of the sites that I used to use, so I decided to have a look and see if any of them still existed! To my surprise, a number of the sites that I recall are still going strong even today and I discovered some new sites too!

The first piece of custom content that always comes to mind for The Sims is the Rejuvenation Chamber from Homeslice. Essentially it is a shower that replenishes your Sims needs, which at the time seemed a lot easier than constantly trying to queue interactions for your Sim just to ignore or by trying to cheat them.

You can still download Homeslice’s creations here including Slice City, Mabel the Chicken, the Typewriter and the Harley Fixer-Upper II!

Around The Sims was another site that is still up and running today and was the first site that I had ever used to download custom content. There was one occasion where the majority of my custom content was from Around The Sims. I loved it as it just helped fill those missing gaps in my Sims homes be it an Architect’s Office, a laundry room or downloading skins or Build mode items.

Revisiting the site for the first time in a number of years felt nostalgic, and it reminded me of all the different homes I tried to build using custom content.

SIMcredible Designs was another site that I would visit often. I don’t remember many of the pieces of custom content that I had, but I remember having a selection of bedroom, patio and a selection of more miscellaneous items too.

Of course, over time many of the sites I can remember have closed down as we have moved onto newer instalments of The Sims games. I tried to search for a few of the sites I could remember, but sadly the hosting for those sites had stopped.

The last site that I had a few memories from was a site called Sim Freaks, and it is still going pretty strong even now in 2021. Not only could you download a variety of custom content, but there was also tutorials and guides should you be looking to create your own custom content as well. I’m pretty sure this is where I found the guide to help me try and create my own custom content for The Sims, but that is a story for another day.

More about the Ponds Tool coming to The Sims 4 Base Game

0

Yesterday SimGuruRomeo clarified a few things about The Sims 4 Cottage Living on his Twitter profile, including information about the Ponds Tool coming to The Sims 4 Base Game for free!

Yup, beside the fact that he confirmed that the Pond Tool will be a free addition to The Sims 4 he also clarified some things regarding how the Pond Tool functions and what you’ll be able to do with it.

Can my Sims swim in ponds?

We wanted to provide players with as much flexibility in customizing the looks and shapes of their ponds. Because of this, Sims will not be able to swim in them. However, we wanted to make sure there was fun gameplay associated with ponds. You can find Sims splashing in the ponds edges, catching fish that you have stocked in the pond, as well as decorate your pond with brand new objects and VFX.

Beside answering this important question he also answered plenty more over on Twitter regarding how they work. Here are the most important facts about the Ponds Tool!

  • It will function in conjunction with terrain tool. You will use the terrain tool to dig the hole you want, and then you will use a separate water tool to fill said hole to your desired height.
  • Sims will be able to splash and play in the shallow edges of the pond.
  • What you see here is the Bagley river from the new world. The new world of Henford-on-Bagley will have various locations Sims can swim off lot.

More about the Ponds Tool coming to The Sims 4 Base Game

  • Ponds will freeze in the winter. For the same reasons Sims are unable to Swim, Sims are unable to Skate on ponds.
  • Ducks are one of the many Pond VFX that players can place using the new Pond Tool. The Pond Tool will also be a free base game update for everyone when Cottage Living drops.

Dina and Grim: A Morbid Sims Love Story (+ How to start a Family with Grim Reaper)

Hi. I’m Dina Caliente. You may remember me from such titles as The Sims 2 and The Sims 3 Barnacle Bay.

I’m here today to tell my story. No, not that story. I had nothing to do with the Goth woman’s disappearance and I refuse to say anything more about that without my lawyer present! I mean the story that happened after all that unpleasantness. The story of my fresh start in the most unlikely of places. The loving arms of Death himself. Oh, you’ve never heard that story? Probably because no one ever wants to hear my side of things. Maybe if I wore a red dress and dyed my hair black, I’d get some attention around here!

Dina and Grim: A Morbid Sims Love Story (+ How to start a Family with Grim Reaper)

It all started on a beautiful summer day in Oasis Springs. I’d decided I’d had enough of living in my sister and my mother’s shadow and that Don was only going to keep bringing me down. I mustered up the courage to kick them all out of the house so I could turn over a new leaf. Well. I tried, anyway. That Don Lothario somehow always manages to sweet talk his way back into my good graces and he did exactly that. I thought one more romantic night by the pool couldn’t hurt, could it? I agreed to let him stay one more night for old times’ sake.

Dina and Grim: A Morbid Sims Love Story (+ How to start a Family with Grim Reaper)

Don and I were having a lovely time by the pool until I decided to fetch some drinks for us. When I looked at the clock in the kitchen, I realised my favourite TV medical drama was having an all-day marathon today and I was missing it! Needless to say, I got a little distracted. By the time I realised six hours had passed and went outside, Don was… Oh Watcher, don’t make me say it! My poor, dear Don had tragically drowned!

Hm? What’s that? What do you mean, “How did that big fence get in front of the pool?” How should I know?! Ahem…

That’s when I saw him. The most alluring otherworldly being I’d ever laid eyes on had come to retrieve poor Don’s soul. My heart fluttered in my chest like it did when I met my first husband… whom we won’t speak any more of on the grounds that I may incriminate myself. Falsely, I might add.

I knew his job was to just collect his soul and go but I couldn’t say goodbye. Not without at least trying to get to know this mysterious figure. I introduced myself and the sparks flew instantly. I couldn’t believe how effortless our conversation was. We stood there over Don’s all but forgotten tombstone (Watcher rest his soul), laughing and enjoying each other’s company for hours. When he reluctantly grabbed his scythe and floated off to go to his next appointment, I had a moment of panic. What if I didn’t see him again until my own demise? I couldn’t wait that long. My soulmate was about to leave me alone for the rest of my life!

I called out to him. He turned around. “Would you like to stay?” I asked him. “Here. With me. Forever.”

With a slow nod, my love returned to me. He confessed that he’d been considering retiring and letting his apprentice take over the tiring job of reaping souls. That he longed to settle down with a house and a family and live out eternity as a mortal Sim but finding love as the Grim Reaper was difficult. Most people screamed and ran at the sight of him or were too busy mourning their lost loved one to contemplate a romantic evening with the reaper who took their soul. How rude. I was the first person to see past the intimidating exterior and get to know him.

Dina and Grim: A Morbid Sims Love Story (+ How to start a Family with Grim Reaper)

Grim, as I affectionately called him, moved in that very day. He loved doing everyday mundane things like cooking and cleaning the house in his bath robe and I loved watching him do all the house work for me. We were simply meant to be. I couldn’t say I was surprised when he got down on one knee and proposed to me not even a week later. Why wait? When you know, you know.

The wedding was an elegant affair, if not sparse. Not many people understood my love for Grim. They thought it was “creepy” and “morbid” but they know nothing of eternal love like we do. At least my mother and sister attended. I’ll never forget my mother’s words to me on my wedding day. “I guess this one can’t die on you like the last one, so that’s something.” Indeed, Mother. Indeed.

Dina and Grim: A Morbid Sims Love Story (+ How to start a Family with Grim Reaper)

The night I became Mrs. Dina Reaper, Grim and I got started on having a happy little reaper family of our own. Did we move fast? Maybe, but I’ve always liked to live life like a roller coaster ride and my husband had waited long enough to raise a family. Several thousand years, in fact!

You might think the Grim Reaper wouldn’t have a nurturing bone in his skeletal body but you’d be wrong. Grim was the picture perfect father-to-be… until I went into labour and he panicked but you really can’t blame him for that. His job is the exact opposite of bringing new life into the world, after all!

Once our darling little Carolina Reaper was born, Grim was all smiles again. I think. I’ve never actually seen what’s underneath his hood and I’d rather not know. The mystery of it is exciting! She grew so fast, too. When she started to walk, we knew we had a Baby Reaper on our hands. Little Carolina left a trail of black smoke everywhere she went and she inherited her father’s eerie echo of a voice. Isn’t she just precious?

So that’s my story. The story of Dina Reaper and how I got my happily ever after straight out of the afterlife. They won’t tell you this story in any of the Sims titles but it’s the truth. I’d like to thank Don. Without him, none of this would have been possible. Rest in peace, Don.

Dina and Grim: A Morbid Sims Love Story (+ How to start a Family with Grim Reaper)

Mrs. Reaper’s lawyers would like to add to the record that nothing in this memoir is an admission of guilt and that the contents of said memoir are absolutely not admissible evidence in a court of law. Any apparent connection to any deaths and/or disappearances is purely coincidental and Mrs. Reaper claims no liability for any of the tragic events mentioned in the above memoir.

Hackers break into EA’s framework and steal 780GB of Source Code

4

Yesterday VICE broke the story of unknown hackers breaking into EA’s server and stealing tons of source code.

According to the post from hackers on a deep web webpage they’ve managed to steal source code for the Frostbite engine, FIFA 21, FIFA 22 and other EA frameworks and software development tools. In total there is now 780GB of stolen EA data put up for sale by hackers.

In those forum posts the hackers said they have taken the source code for FIFA 21, as well as code for its matchmaking server. The hackers also said they have obtained source code and tools for the Frostbite engine, which powers a number of EA games including Battlefield. Other stolen information includes proprietary EA frameworks and software development kits (SDKs), bundles of code that can make game development more streamlined. In all, the hackers say they have 780gb of data, and are advertising it for sale in various underground hacking forum posts

So far we know that only FIFA and games powered by Frostbite had been affected by this data breach. EA released a statement about this breach and underlined that none of the customers’ personal data and information have been affected nor exposed during this breach.

We are investigating a recent incident of intrusion into our network where a limited amount of game source code and related tools were stolen. No player data was accessed, and we have no reason to believe there is any risk to player privacy. Following the incident, we’ve already made security improvements and do not expect an impact on our games or our business. We are actively working with law enforcement officials and other experts as part of this ongoing criminal investigation.

The Community Reacts to The Sims 4 Cottage Living

A new world, new experiences, new animal friends, Agnes Crumplebottom returns, and a chicken in a suit? The Sims 4 Cottage Living  Expansion Pack has officially been announced, and the community has been alive with their reactions to the new expansion pack!

The overall reception to the announcement was positive, with many players expressing their delight and excitement for the upcoming pack. There were some players that were surprised to see some features they expected not included, they were happy to see other features that were instead.

Take a look at some of the many reactions to today’s news!

What did you think of the announcement trailer for The Sims 4 Cottage Living? Let us know over on our social media and in the comments below!

The Sims 4 Cottage Living: Everything We Noticed in The Reveal!

It’s official! The Sims 4 Cottage Living is coming to PC and consoles on July 22nd! The first reveal trailer just dropped today and it is packed with cottagecore-themed delight and whimsy! Let your Sims escape the pressures of the rat race and enjoy a peaceful, idyllic countryside life in the charming town of Henford on Bagley, complete with farmland, animals galore, and quaint rural activities.

Here’s everything that stood out to us in the trailer!

So Many Animals!

Let’s get the biggest thing out of the way, first… ALL OF THE ANIMALS!!! With cute little sweaters and accessories! Our hearts can’t take the cuteness overload! In the trailer, we saw a woman singing with songbirds like a Disney princess, bunnies, chickens, cows, foxes, and llamas! Sims can shear the llamas, milk the cows, and collect eggs from the chickens. The bunnies look like adorable playmates for little ones and adults alike. As for the foxes, we technically already have them in the Cats & Dogs expansion so it will be interesting to see how these foxes work with the ones we can create as pets in CAS already. Did we mention they all have the CUTEST clothes?! Just look at them!

Overgrown Ruins

The Sims 4 Cottage Living: Everything We Noticed in The Reveal!

Perhaps something not quite as obviously noticeable is the overgrown ruins in the background of several scenes in the trailer. While we know many people were very hopeful about the possibility of faeries being included in this expansion, we did not see anything that explicitly alluded to faeries. Ruins are a very common sight in the British countryside and it’s very possible that these are just decorative backdrops but we felt it was worth mentioning. Maybe there is a small glimmer of hope for faeries. We’ll have to wait and see.

Open Swimming Areas

The Sims 4 Cottage Living: Everything We Noticed in The Reveal!

Since the release of Island Living, The Sims Team has been making a concentrated effort to include swimming spots in as many of the worlds as they can. It looks like the new world, Henford on Bagley, will have a place for Sims to swim in the common space as well.

Mrs. Crumplebottom

The Sims 4 Cottage Living: Everything We Noticed in The Reveal!

The myth. The legend. The icon. Mrs. Crumplebottom is back! And she will still knock the romance out of you with her purse just like old times! We were thrilled to see this legendary character make her triumphant return to the series and even more thrilled that she got to keep her purse which is arguably just as iconic as she is.

Pond Tool

The Sims 4 Cottage Living: Everything We Noticed in The Reveal!

In the trailer, we saw a barren lot go from nothing to a lively countryside farm… ponds included! Many players were left scratching their heads after the terrain tool update that came to the game last year neglected to include any tools for making ponds but it looks like this will be added at last. Will the ponds be swimmable? Fishable? Only time will tell.

Farming and New Produce

The Sims 4 Cottage Living: Everything We Noticed in The Reveal!

Cottage country life wouldn’t be cottage country life without a few gardening additions. Farming looks like its going to be more immersive than ever and we even have new produce we can grow and enjoy, like these adorable pumpkins! We also spotted eggplants and watermelons later on in the trailer.

Needlepoint

The Sims 4 Cottage Living: Everything We Noticed in The Reveal!

Needlepoint was featured in the trailer as a new activity for Sims to enjoy. People who were disappointed that the Nifty Knitting Stuff pack didn’t include other textile crafts like cross stitch can rejoice! Children can even do needlepoint… just be careful they don’t prick their fingers like this child did in the trailer.

Canned Goods

The Sims 4 Cottage Living: Everything We Noticed in The Reveal!

We can see a family cooking together in the kitchen in the trailer which gives us all sorts of warm, fuzzy, cottage family life vibes, but we also spotted a can of what looks like jam on the island counter by the cutting board. A jar of milk also sits on the kitchen table in the lower left corner of the image. More groceries and things to cook with are always a welcomed addition to the game.

Kids helping in the kitchen

The Sims 4 Cottage Living: Everything We Noticed in The Reveal!

On that same note, we can also see a child Sim helping her family in the kitchen! Children have been sadly left out of a lot of the day-to-day household chores in The Sims 4, but in a pack dedicated to rural living, it only makes sense to have children be included in those everyday chores. Farm kids are expected to help around the house and on the farm because the family needs all hands on deck to keep such a large property running smoothly. We’re happy The Sims Team recognized the important role children play on a family farm, too.

Picnic Baskets

The Sims 4 Cottage Living: Everything We Noticed in The Reveal!

This scene with the family eating from a picnic basket takes us back to The Sims 3 and we’re here for it! A family picnic at the farmer’s market on a sunny afternoon sounds like a perfect way to enjoy an idyllic countryside life!

Farmer’s Market Stalls

The Sims 4 Cottage Living: Everything We Noticed in The Reveal!

Vendor stalls aren’t anything new in The Sims 4 but it’s always exciting to see what sorts of brand new goodies our Sims will be able to buy from them whenever we get new ones! We’re hoping for mouth-watering fresh farm-grown produce. Yum!

Agricultural Competitions

The Sims 4 Cottage Living: Everything We Noticed in The Reveal!

A new activity coming with Cottage Living is agricultural competitions! Raise the biggest, most delicious produce on your farm and then enter it in the competition! We are so excited to see this in the game, as we’ve never had competitions specifically for farm produce in The Sims before, although we did have cooking competitions in The Sims 2 FreeTime. We can’t wait to wow the town with our own giant pumpkins!

The Sims 4 Cottage Living: Animals and Gameplay Q&A

5

SimGuruRomeo went on Twitter to answer PLENTY of questions regarding the newly-announced Expansion Pack – The Sims 4 Cottage Living!

Down below we’ve listed all the important information shared during this Twitter Q&A session including new info about Create A Sim, Animals, Gameplay and World. Check it out!

CAS

  • We are adding a good variety of male clothing for this pack.

Build

  • (The Pond Tool) will function in conjunction with terrain tool. You will use the terrain tool to dig the hole you want, and then you will use a separate water tool to fill said hole to your desired height.
  • The oversized crops are brand new crops, and function slightly differently than your normal gardening plants.
  • For the same reasons Sims are unable to Swim, Sims are unable to Skate on ponds.
  • Ducks are one of the many Pond VFX that players can place using the new Pond Tool. The Pond Tool will also be a free base game update for everyone when Cottage Living drops.

Animals

  • Cows, Llamas, and Chickens will not take up a household slot. You will be able to place an Animal Shed and purchase either a cow or llama for the shed. You will also be able to purchase a chicken coop and have up to 8 chickens per coop.
  • Bunnies and Birds can be found out in the wild. As you befriend these cuddly creatures you can purchase a rabbit or bird home for your lot to have them show up more often. They can also help out in the garden! These animals will also not take up a slot in your household.
  • Each shed will house a single cow or llama. But we intentionally did not build fences around the sheds, so you can place a couple sheds, in a fenced off area, next to each other and have a mini pasture of cows if you wanted.
  • You will be able to build relationship and name the rabbits, so they will hang around your lot a lot. It is almost like having them as a pet, without having to cage them. They are free spirits.
  • Once you befriend them you can place their home on any lot, but initially you will only find them in the new world.
  • Animals will eventually die of old age, but there are ways to keep them alive forever if you choose.
  • You can give names to animals.
  • There will be a lot more info around animal clothing soon, but animals will not do it [picking their clothes] autonomously. Have you ever seen a rabbit knit their own sweater?
  • All the wild animals in this pack will have relationships with your Sims, through a brand new gifting system.
  • [The new foxes] are true wild foxes, you will not be able to add them to your household like you can in Cats & Dogs.
  • We actually created all new animations for the fox. They will skulk about your lot and act more fox like. They also will get into your chicken coop.
  • Cows and Llamas will stay near their sheds, but they have a generous area for them to roam around in.
  • You will be able to negate the simolean cost for all knitting items by using Llama Wool.
  • Bunnies are not pets that you have to feed and constantly care for. They are pretty self sufficient. You can place their homes on your lot, assuming you have enough relationship with them. They will come and go as they please.
  • You will only be able to breed Chickens.
  • These animals are not available in CAS. However, you will be able to purchase various colors of Cows, Chickens, and Llamas. For Rabbits you will need to explore the world and befriend the rabbit in your desired color. You will also be able apply the animal clothing in game.
  • Placing a Rabbit Home from the catalog will allow them to hang out on your lot more often. You will not be able to add these animals directly to your household skewer, but you can access any of them through your relationship panel assuming you have built relationship with them.

Gameplay

  • We actually tied Canning to the cooking skill, but we do have a new skill coming in the pack. More info to come soon.
  • You will be able to pack your picnic basket and bring it to some very scenic locations in Henford-On Bagley. Once placed on a table you will be able to set up a picnic with a single interaction off the basket.
  • You can put the picnic basket in your Sims inventory, and enjoy a picnic on any table, and in any world.
  • We added a handful of new recipes to this pack to fit the cottage theme. Milk Bread is one of them. We added the ability to cook with a group of Sims. So, kids will not cook on their own but they can help their parents to make it a family activity!
  • We also added some additional things to children. More info to come.
  • We created a new “Lot Challenge” system, more info on that soon. All the lots in the new world will start with the “Wild Fox” challenge enabled. If you don’t want foxes to pester you, you will be able to disable that challenge, but who doesn’t want a cute cuddly fox hanging out?
  • We do not have a traditional career in the sense, but Sims can absolutely make a living raising and caring for their animals and new giant produce. There is also a system that we will talk about soon, called Village Errands. The locals will have lots for your Sims to do!
  • You will be able to purchase beef, chicken, and other ingredients from the local shop in town, or order it through the new Grocery Deliver service.
  • I am excited about the new deathS for this pack. More info soon. Also we do have a new woohoo spot =D
  • There is a local Grocery Stall in the village of Henford-on-Bagley. It is run by the local NPC Kim Goldbloom.
  • Yes, this bonus content is available for both Preorders and Purchases before September 2nd.
  • Cottage Living will not have any occults, but there is always a possibility for occults in the future.

World

  • Henford-on-Bagley comes with 3 neighborhoods with 4 lots each.
  • There is 1 64×64 in the countryside neighborhood. That is where we have our largest lots.
  • Lots of (world) inspiration from the Cotswold’s.
  • The new world of Henford-on-Bagley will have various locations Sims can swim off lot.

The Sims 4 Cottage Living: Number of New Neighborhoods and Lots Confirmed

2

SimGuruRomeo went on twitter today to answer plenty of questions regarding The Sims 4 Cottage Living Expansion Pack!

While we compile the entire list in a summary of new facts and information, we wanted to share insight specifically regarding the new Henford-on-Bagley world and its size.

Romeo confirmed that the world will come with 3 different neighborhoods – with each neighborhood bringing 4 new lots.

He also confirmed that there is one lot in this world that’s 64×64 – and that the entire neighborhood with this lot is huge!

We yet have to find out the sizes of these lots, are there any hidden lots and how big each neighborhood is. However, if we got anything from the reveal trailer it’s that the world is packing some huge lots and environments!

The Sims 4 Cottage Living is bringing back Groceries

4

Finally some good food!

If you’ve ever played The Sims 2 you’d know the stress of having to refill an empty fridge. Well, it really wasn’t too stressful considering that there was a grocery delivery service with a delivery man and a delivery truck full of groceries waiting at your doorstep just a few hours after your order!

Screen via Reddit

The Sims 4 Cottage Living is bringing back Groceries

In The Sims 3 we had a Grocery Store rabbit hole where you could purchase fresh ingridients for cooking. However, it was more of an optional feature and you could buy the missing ingridients anytime your Sim would want to cook but don’t have what’s required.

The Sims 4 Cottage Living is bringing back Groceries

However, in The Sims 4 the concept of groceries was completely…forgotten? Well, up until today!

In the official blog post for The Sims 4 Cottage Living The Sims Team revealed the new Lot Challenges Feature. Although they haven’t shared much about what the new Lot Challenges are, they did share some information regarding the new Simple Living Lot Challenge which comes with new Grocery gameplay!

The Simple Living Lot Challenge makes cooking cheaper, but it also means recipes depend entirely on what you’ve got in your inventory. Forage in the nearby woods for mushrooms and berries, borrow some milk and eggs from your animals, and keep your garden full. Missing something? Place an order with the local grocery shop and get all your ingredients delivered right to your doorstep. (Don’t forget to tip the delivery person!)

Beside the new grocery orders the team also talked a little about running your own grocery stall and even the ability to order chocolate milk from the grocery store!

  • Have a Henford heart-to-heart with the pub owners at The Gnome’s Arms or the Sim running the grocery stall for some wild stories and gossip.
  • You’ll need to find some chocoberries out in the wild or add them to your grocery delivery order to get chocolate milk.

There’s a lot we yet have to discover about Lot Challenges and ordering groceries but it’s cool to know we’re getting that extra layer of realism in The Sims 4!

The Sims 4 is getting a Pond Tool

And just a few years after we got the Terrain Tools too!

In the reveal trailer for The Sims 4 Cottage Living Expansion Pack The Sims Team went all in to showcase new features.

If you take a closer look in the screens below from the trailer you will notice something rather important: a Pond being made! And it seems to not be just any object type of ponds that we’ve gotten in the game already – with deeper terraforming into the ground Ponds can now be finally formed!

Check out the previews below:

Still, that’s not all!

In another screenshot preview of the same lot you will also notice a Sim entering a Pond, which means that they will definitely be swimmable and interactable!

The Sims 4 is getting a Pond Tool

@Ashaife who is an Assistant Producer on The Sims also teased the Pond Tool on her Twitter profile:

Right now we don’t know a lot about the Pond Tool and how it’ll work in the game but we’ll definitely keep you posted as we learn more!

The Sims 4 Cottage Living: 100+ HQ Screens from the Reveal

2

The reveal trailer for The Sims 4 Cottage Living Expansion Pack was fast paced – following along all the adventures (and misadvantures) around a snooping bunny that’s exploring the new world of Henford-on-Bagley!

We completely understand the frustration of having to pause the reveal trailer every now and then to spot the details which is why we’ve extracted over a 100 screens (116 to be exact) from the trailer!

These screens are in super high quality so you won’t miss out on a single detail that was shown in the reveal. To see an image of your choice in better resolution simply click the image of your choice to enlarge it.

The Sims 4 Cottage Living: Purchase Bonus Gifts
