The Sims 4 Development Team is expanding to Maxis Europe

Say hello to another development team working on The Sims 4 – Maxis Europe!

A few days ago EA Careers website posted a job listing for a Senior Development Director for a brand new studio called Maxis Europe. The locations listed in the job opportunity includes all the Electronic Arts office spaces that are currently located in Europe, including Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, Finland and many more listed below!

The role for a Senior Development Director in Maxis Europe hasn’t been very clear until another job opportunity got listed today with EA’s clear goals and intentions – to expand The Sims 4’s development team and apparently add more workforce to the game!

In the description for the Technical Lead Job Opportunity, EA states that they’re looking to establish a new distributed development team based in the EU region to complement the already existing development team in Maxis Redwood Shores, USA.

The Sims 4 is looking to expand on providing a world-class experience for our players. As part of an initiative to provide broader coverage, we are looking to establish a distributed development team based in the EU region to complement our team in Redwood Shores CA, USA. We are looking for a strong Technical Lead to oversee tech planning and implementation of features/tools and to lead a team of cross-functional engineers.

This wouldn’t be the first time that a Sims Game had two seperate development studios. After the release of The Sims 3 Pets on both Consoles and PC, EA expanded its Salt Lake Studio to work on upcoming Expansion Packs for The Sims 3 including Showtime, Supernatural, University Life and Into the Future. With two different EA studios The Sims 3 was able to push out up to 3 Expansion Packs per year!

Although the definite goal of opening up a Maxis Studio in Europe isn’t know, we can possibly expect a lot more content for The Sims 4 to be pushed out with two development studios working on the game simultaneously – both Free Updates and DLC.

At the moment there are mentions of three seperate Maxis Studios from the job opportunities that were listed over the last couple of months:

It might take a bit for EA to officially announce new developers and gurus joining The Sims 4 Team considering that only leading development roles have been listed. Stay tuned to Sims Community for more information as it develops further!

The Sims 4 is getting more Free Cultural Content this year!

2

Over the last couple of years The Sims 4 had a good streak of free content updates that are inspired by various cultures. In today’s Inside Maxis Livestream the team confirmed that they’re definitely not stopping with new free cultural content in the game.

The team showed a sneak peek of one of their Work in Progress designs that should be added in one of the upcoming patches for The Sims 4 this year. They’ve also confirmed that representation and free cultural content will be constantly added to the world of The Sims 4. Check out the preview!

I do want to share some concept art for our current Work in Progress design that we are looking to add into the game at a later patch. As you can see we are pretty inspired by Morocco right now and while we don’t have a firm date of release for this item, we are super excited to support for the representation in the Base Game this year and beyond.

The Sims Team officially addresses Pronouns for The Sims 4

5

It’s no secret that the simming community has been very passionate about wanting to add pronouns options to The Sims 4. After several weeks, petitions, comments and more from the community The Sims Team finally addressed the possibility of adding Pronouns to The Sims 4 in their latest Inside Maxis Livestream.

Although they cannot for certain say that Pronouns will be added to The Sims 4, they did confirm that the team has been evaluating new ways of adding gender neutral language and pronoun options in the game while also having the game fully accessible for all 18 supported languages.

You can check out the full transcript from GrimSuruDoi’s statement from Inside Maxis down below:

This is a question that’s certainly been on the minds of the community. I think to start off as an entire team I’d say that when it comes to representation – it’s not a destination. It’s a journey that we’re all continuously working towards across the board. We’ve seen and read your comments regarding pronouns and their availabilty in the game and we hear you.

At this time we can’t confirm anything in regards to timing. What we can say that for a long time our time has been evaluating ways to add gender neutral language while considering how complex it would be to do so. Currently we’ve been investigating changes needed considering not only the size of our game but the possibilities of all 18 supported languages to make sure that we do this work in the best way possible.

This is super important to all of us which means we want to make sure that when we do it – we do it right.

I want to thank you for your continuous support for a truly representative environment in game. We are hopeful for the future. We look forward to sharing progress when we are able to as well as on our future plans for this aspect, and others across the game as well.

Catharina Lavers becomes the new General Manager of Maxis

1

Catharina Lavers is now the new General Manager of Maxis, EA’s parent company which develops The Sims.

This role was previously taken by Joe Nickolls, also known as SimGuruGMJoe over on Twitter. The role switch has been made after 4 years as Joe wants to spend more time with his family in Canada.

Catharina previously had experience with Maxis and The Sims during her time as an executive producer on The Sims Social.

GamesIndustry.biz released a full interview with Catharina regarding her upcoming plans for her time at Maxis. Check it out!

“Maxis is an amazing studio with an incredible legacy,” Samantha Ryan, senior vice president and group GM at EA, tells us. “Our communities are some of EA’s most diverse, global and passionate. We are committed to continuing to support and grow this community over time.

“Bringing a strong, dedicated leader like Catharina on board is a sign of our ongoing commitment to the future of the studio. Joe Nicholls, our prior leader, has been amazing over the past four years, but family has to come first and Joe will be joining them back in Canada as he embarks on his next adventure.”

Mallet continues: “Maxis makes some of the most beloved and enduring games of all time, with an incredibly diverse and global community of players. We will be building on and strengthening this legacy of community and inclusion, to bring them new experiences and delighting players worldwide through deeper and ongoing ways to engage with each other and our games. We will also be growing substantially to achieve our ambitious vision.

“I am returning to EA with an enormous appreciation for not only the strength of the Maxis business and the unparalleled creative and technical capability of the team, but also the passion of the creative and diverse community of Sims players.

“There is also tremendous opportunity to build on this foundation and provide delightful experiences for this generation — and the next — of Sims players. My background is in helping creative, innovative companies in both Europe and the US deliver on ambitious visions and build deeper, ongoing relationships with their users. I look forward to working with this amazing team to further the great work Joe Nichols has done, and create the kinds of connected, creative experiences our players are looking for as we grow the studio to reflect the global diversity of our player community.”

Maxis has been quiet in terms of new launches since it released The Sims 4 in 2014, but has continually supported the game over time following a launch where some fans were disappointed with the number of features. Since then, the game has grown rapidly, with more than 30 million players worldwide.

“It seems so long ago — over seven years — since Sims 4 launched,” Ryan adds. “We learned a lot. We doubled down since then and the team has done an amazing job of adding to the depth and breadth of the game. Folks in the industry used to talk about having successful games that could live for five years. Now we talk about them lasting ten years, 15 years, or more. There’s been a shift across the entire games industry to support and nurture our communities long-term, and we’re committed to doing just that with The Sims 4.

“In fact, we also do more than ever to partner closely with our community. We often speak directly with them, seeking their guidance and input.

“Working from home for the last year hasn’t been easy, especially with the many, many updates each month. I’m so proud of the amazing job our team has done to keep everything running as smoothly as possible for our players despite all that’s happening in the world today.”
