Will Your Computer Support The Sims 4 after June 2019? Here’s how to check!

There’s been some concern following the recent announcement that The Sims 4 will no longer be supporting Non-Metal Macs or 32-bit PCs as of June 2019.

Many Simmers don’t know what this means and don’t know how to check if their computer will be supported after June.

Here is how to check if your computer will be supported after June 2019:

For Windows

  • Right-click the Windows START button. It’s the Windows symbol in the bottom left corner of your desktop.
  • Select System from the drop-down menu.
  • Scroll down to System Specifications and look at System Type
  • If it says 64-bit, you’re good. Your computer will still be supported after June. If it says 32-bit, your computer will not be supported.

For Mac

The following Mac models support Metal:

  • MacBook models introduced in 2015 or later
  • MacBook Air models introduced in 2012 or later
  • MacBook Pro models introduced in 2012 or later
  • Mac mini models introduced in 2012 or later
  • iMac models introduced in 2012 or later
  • iMac Pro (all models)
  • Mac Pro models introduced in late 2013, plus mid-2010 or mid-2012 models with a recommended Metal-capable graphics card

source: https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT205073

What do I do if My Computer is no Longer Supported?

If your computer model is not supported, you will need to upgrade to a supported model in order to have continued access to The Sims 4 and all its future updates, packs, and online features.

However, The Sims Team will be releasing The Sims 4: Legacy Edition for previous players of The Sims 4 who no longer have supported computers. The Sims 4: Legacy Edition will be the completed game up to StrangerVille, but will not have any future updates or packs available for it. The Sims 4: Legacy Edition will not have online access to the Gallery.

For more information on how this change will affect current players, please refer to our article, The Sims Team Announces Termination of The Sims 4’s 32-bit and Non-Metal Mac OS Versions.

The update erased years of work… and I didn’t even know it would happen until after it did. I can’t afford a new laptop but I’ve spent countless hours contributing to the gallery and now I can’t even look at it. All my work is gone… I’m really disappointed in who ever made the call- because from the look of things anyone who couldn’t afford the transfer is dead to the company because their time, trust, and emotional investment amounts to nothing after one update. EA really knows how to treat loyal customers…

I guess I’ll have to do this legacy version. I just bought a new expansion pack today, Island Living, because of their Black Friday sale, will I even be able to play it with the legacy version? It just frustrates me because I’m a single, disabled parent on a limited income and can’t just get a new computer. I can’t even afford a used one. I’ve had my iMac since 2009 and while it’s slow, it played Sims 4 just fine for me.

Hiii, I know this comment is mooonnthhhhs late but I’m just now up and around updating my game and such and it won’t let me play without legacy edition except my laptop is, in fact, 64bit. Is there anyone that possibly knows why this is? It’s so frustrating trying to figure this all out. :/

My Macbook pro is mid 2010 and 64 bit. I’ve used the Sims 4 after June 2019 and didn’t need legacy edition. Only in Mid January did my computer suddenly need Legacy Edition, and now for some reason it can’t run sims without it? Can someone please explain what’s going on? I’m so annoyed because I just bought Discover University and then only after did I download it and buy it did I see that it wasn’t compatible with Legacy Edition. I REALLY don’t want to have to buy a new computer (I’ve been thinking about it but I decided not to) JUST so i can use the sims pack. 🙁 PLEAse please help.

I have a Macbook Air (2017) running MacOS Catalina version 10.15.2
it contains a 1.8 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 processor. 8 Gb 1600 MHz DDR3 memory. And Intel HD Graphics 6000 156 MB graphics.
To my understanding it should still support Sims 4 however it will not launch the game. When I try it will give me the message that it can not open. I have spent a lot of time and money in the Sims platform and am very upset that i have not been able to use my game for serval months now! I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program. I have tried to update the game and repair it as well. Nothing seems to work. Is there something that I am missing? Will i ever get to play my beloved game again?

You really shouldn’t. Those users are actually holding everyone else in the Sims community back as far as adding more graphics/CPU/RAM intensive features to the game. If you ever see people complain about lag, that is usually the culprit. They REALLY should have only had one version from the very beginning. You never see these problems in other gaming communities; only in The Sims.

Now hold on there, no need to hate people who are not as rich as you to buy a 64-bit PC, y’know? They are not to blame. Yes, supporting their systems is one of the reasons the game isnt progressing well, but putting all the blame on them and completely forgetting the fact that the gurus are blatantly ignoring the community is….well, ignorant. I would try to get newer gurus rather than players (especially after they fucked up badly with the whole pedo-ass gamechanger).

No need to buy a new PC. They can upgrade to 64 bits by installing a 64 bit OS wich is far cheaper. The only ignorant I see here is you, spreading missinformation and hate and making people panic.

That’s an extremely selfish and offensive thing to ask for. If you’re an addict go get a part time job or go baby sit until you can afford another computer. Do not beg like a lowlife. Life lesson: All things worth something take effort. Don’t expect other people to hand you everything.

Not everybody can get jobs. Some people are unable to get a job when it comes to age. Some people are unable to get a job simply because their parents won’t let them. Some people can’t get a job because their applications haven’t been looked at yet. Some people cant get a job because theyre too busy with middle school, highschool and so on. Some people do have jobs, but can barely afford to eat, pay for college tuition, pay for their bills etc. Not everyone is going to put off everything in their life and be failing class and/or be damn near homeless, so the people on the higher classes are happy. It doesn’t work like that.

I hate to be that person but the sims is a luxury of sorts. It’s not something that’s life or death if you don’t own it or play it. Saving money for things like food, rent, tuition is more important. Putting up extra cash to save for a game or a computer is different from asking other people to give you money. I’m not rich but that’s what I did until I was finally able to get a good job despite the fact that I choose a field that finding a job should’ve supposedly been far easier.

If someone can hardly afford to eat, then a computer upgrade is the least of their worries. The only thing you’ll lose is access to the gallery, and the ability to purchase future packs. You’ll still be able to play Sims 4. If you can’t afford to eat, how are you even going to afford buying more packs, anyways? Sims is NOT a cheap game; if you can afford it, you can also likely afford a computer upgrade. Stop holding the game back by complaining about wanting support for your fossil.

To all of those people complaining that you need a new computer. You don’t…you don’t need a new computer by ANY stretch of the imagination. What do you need? A new OPERATING SYSTEM. 32 bit is not a type of machine, it’s a method of coding. If you for example have Windows 10 Home 32 bit you won’t be supported, however as it’s again NOT a machine you literally just buy a CD key. You NEVER replace the whole machine unless you totally fry it. You buy the Operating System and install it. That is it, you people are over exaggerating your situation HIGHLY. An OS is VERY cheap too so

32-bit is a type of machine, or a type of processor to be correct. Most Intel and AMD processors for the last decade, or longer, are 64-bit. You are correct when you say that most people will need to just but a 64-bit version of Windows.

You’ve got to be kidding. You don’t even know for a fact your computer will become unsupported, but are begging total strangers to buy you a new one? Just so you have continued access to future packs and the gallery? If you’re serious, you just might be the most daft, self-centered person I’ve ever seen. Deal with the fact you might not be able to buy anymore packs, or find a way to earn the money yourself.

Hey don’t freak out. I found something online. If your computer is 32 bit, but runs on a 64 processed thing (it will say that right next to where you found out that your pc is 32 bit) then you can still be saved. Just Google how to install 64 bit and there are instructions. I’m not all that good at files and technology so it seems daunting for me, if that’s the same for you get an IT person you know to help you. All hope is not lost.

No, it already requires 64-bit addressing if you’re loading anything more than the base templates. It maxes the 32-bit space out-of-the-box, and they should never have reduced it in support of the low end.

Nate
Nate

Not possible. They’re not doing it because they’re increasing the game’s power or anything, they’re just doing it because tech is evolving and 32-bit has been on the outs for quite awhile now. A lot of people were surprised years ago when Sims 4 first came out and was only 32-bit. The biggest reason for them going to 64-bit only is because Apple is ending support for 32-bit programs.

The thing is, Macs can last for a pretty long time. Hell, I’m still squeezing as much life as I can out of my current late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro. So sure, I spent around $2,000 for my computer, but I’ve been using it for almost 6 years. Which means that I wound up paying $0.91 per day overall for this computer… and I think I can probably squeeze a couple more years out of it before I need to buy a new one.

A lot of people hate being kept in the stone age because other people aren’t with the times.

I’m sorry, but that’s just how it is in life.

The article says you’ll still have access to the game in it’s current state. Meaning, you’ll get everything you’ve paid for up until now.

If you wish to continue playing The Sims 4 and further additions to the franchise, unfortunately you’ll have to figure something out.

Part of the reason development for the Sims 4 has been so spotty, with so many features missing, has been because they’ve tried to preserve support for even the most low-end PCs.

They’ve taken so much flak and criticism for that decision I’m surprised this didn’t happen sooner.

Further more, Apple is ending 32-bit support. I’m sure this is also pressuring EA to make this decision.

While I’m sorry you’re missing out, the rest of us aren’t in 2011 and are tired of the game being gimped.

though im excited to have all this packs, and I see how this update could do a lot of good, it’s a little disappointing that my $200+ dollars, will end up being a huge waste. and also that im going to not receive any future updates. at the moment the game still feels kind of empty with a loss of some of the already existing expansions (uni, island paradise, etc), but now if they realease them, I cant get them without buying a whole new computer. that I can’t afford. that’s disappointing.

Llana
Llana

Reply to  elliott

Your money will not be a “huge waste”. You’ll have access to the game in its current state- which is exactly what you paid for.

You’ve had no guarantee or reasonable expectation before now that existing content will necessarily be updated, changed, or added onto. Meaning, if you bought Pets, there is no reasonable expectation that they will add horses.

If they add horses to the Pets expansion and your computer doesn’t support the update, that’s on you. You bought the product as-is at the time it was released.

Lacking foresight is not on EA.

What will happen when they are no longer there and no longer supporting Sims 4 period. So, no matter what kind of computer you have you don’t have any guarantee that they will continue to support Sims 4. After all there is talk of Sims 5. That may also be a reason for the change, preparing buyers for the new requirements for S5? And that will leave all of you right where they left S3 players.

Frankly, I want to just play my game and I prefer S3 over S4 so hoping these changes will not affect S3.

I have a new computer and have been fortunate enough to always be ahead of EA/Origin’s requirements, but at least let people determine whether they want an update or no and have access to purchased packs.

Folk, bottom line is it’s all about money. That’s why every month there’s something new to buy. I’m not going to waste money buying every S4 empty stuff packs, and boring towns that even bores the Sims. They are taking one Sims 3 expansion pack and splitting it into several Sims 4 stuff packs and making out big. time and STILL don’t have a fraction of what they had in Sims 2 or 3.

My Mac is Metal compatible and I recently re-installed everything (OS and Sims 3 and 4) and neither Sims 3 or 4 will work…. do I wait for the Legacy version? 🙁
