Early in 2000, with PC gamers engrossed in the worlds of Roller Coaster Tycoon and SimCity 3000, a new contender for the simulation crown emerged from the Maxis stable.
The Sims had sounded so mundane to early tester groups that creator Will Wright had feared his game would never make it off the ground. It would go on to become the biggest selling game franchise in history.
The following facts and trivia will enlighten even the most die-hard of Sims creators – but if we missed any amazing facts, be sure to share your own gems in the comments bellow.
The Talent
What do Kung Fu Panda, Megamind,Monsters vs Aliens and The Sims have in common? The all feature the vocal talents of Stephen Kearin, one of the original voices of the male characters of The Sims. Female Sims were voiced by Gerri Lawlor, with additional voice parts recorded by Sean O’Connor, Laurel McCarl Kapros, Paul Rausmussen, Eli Sibley and Melissa Roberts.

Here is a small collection of Sims Social concept art that i have worked on for Playfish (London). It was a fun and awesome project to be a part of. I thoroughly enjoyed making the artwork for this game; I hope people see familiar art in here. If you havent had a chance, check out Facebook’s Sims Social!
This is concept sketches for the Rocker Girl. I normally keep the sketches VERY loose – maybe the anatomy is off, or its off style – the important thing to take away is “What message, do you as the client, want her to say?” Eventually, they focaused on the “I’m cool and don’t care asian rocker chick.” Some fun poses in here, i really wanted to do the lower left one so much! SHE’S CRAZY!!!
Normally i use photoshop to paint everything, but because the game is in flash, i had to brush up my old illustrator knowledge. In this image, i wanted to show the many layers i use and the many crazy vector lines that spew everywhere. It can get confusing. I’m by far not the greatest “adobe Illustrator” guy out there – the folks at playfish are unGodly with their ‘adobe illustrator’ skills – they can sketch in there as fast as i can draw with pencil.
Here’s the final cleanup done in photoshop and the final color in illustrator. She is by far my favorite… and apparantly EA’s as well? I found a near life size print of her adorned in the walls in our stairwell *sniffles* people actually like my work!
This concept was for a female business executive type personality. I didnt want to make her a floozy, so I tried to stay away from the typical “office bimbo” look. At one point, I was thinking “well, if she’s an exec, i’m sure she’s gonna be yelling at someone on her phone?”
Final cleaned up linework in photoshop, then painted in illustrator.
She’s a cutie! the hopeless romantic, and when i think of a hopeless romantic, i think of AMELIE! so i pulled a lot of inspiration from her (or maybe the art director pulled a lot of inspiration from her and i’m just taking the credit? I cant remember.)
Final cleanup in photoshop, color in illustrator. I included a few color variants here just for show. Each character has several variants for the art director to pick and choose from. Makes my life easier to give several options rather than work on one image with constant feedback.
The sporty Girl! Here are a few concept sketches for a “Sporty girl” – what kinda sports i asked? *Shrugg* so i got to goto town Which do you like?
This is the cleanup done in photoshop and the color finished in illustrator. The original colors you see here were heavily inspired by a piece of artwork I done a year prior. We had this awesome manager that was moving on with her career so I did this piece for her. She’s very much into running, i even came up with the “Thank you for running with us!” CLEVER ALBEEEEERT! you get *albert charm points*!
“We need a villain personality” MUHAHAHAHAHAA yes!!!! sooo many ways to do it! We can go the SEXY villain, or the snobbish villain, or the scheming evil villain, or the posh heavy fuzzy coat villain with too many rings to count? I had a lot of fun exploring these ideas. In order to get some of the poses in here, i usually stand up and act it out. Other cubecoworkers stared as i kept hunching over, rubbing my hands together and making schemey type laughs. It’s easier to design characters this way 🙂
Cleanup in photoshop, and final color in illustrator. My favorite part? the shadow right under his corner lip with a bit of nose flare – gives him that smug cocky look.
Some sketches for a shocked expression. Once again, keeping it VERY loose but enough that the overseas art director can tell what’s going on. Once again, acting played a big role in making these expressions.
The new Deutsch Issue of The Sims Official Magazine confirmed that new The Sims 4 info will be released on June 13th. The new Sims 4 reveal will probably happen during Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3)!
Last summer we were in San Francisco to take a look AT the latest developments of Sims 4 and now we’re back in the States again. Our title story reveals to you what is going on around the Sims, and we’ll be showing you what the developers will convince their fans with.

EA announced today the first details for The Sims™ 4 Collector’s Edition! Another year of creative collaboration with Katy Perry has lead to a brand new edition of The Sims 4.

Origin announced that starting 4th of April, people will no longer have an opportunity to Order games in Physical way.
Simmer strawberrikhunnie got an interesting e-mail from EA. Not just that Simmers who Pre-Ordered The Sims 4 Physical on Origin will get a refund, but they will also get a free copy of The Sims 4 Digital Deluxe!
I hardly check my e-mail, but when I do, good things happen and I get things for FREE.
So I pre-ordered the disc version of The Sims 4 because I wasn’t feeling the whole digital download thing. I like physical copies. Physicaaaaal. Haha, anyway, I check my e-mail today and I got an e-mail from Origin saying that my Sims 4 pre-order was successfully cancelled and I’m just sitting there like … . I mean cool, money for groceries but I didn’t cancel it … . and then I get a second e-mail.

SimGuruCopeland and SimGuruTatertot shared some fun news about the upcoming Store Venue – Deliciously Indulgent Bakery. Here’s what they have to say about it:
I’m so glad we can start talking about the Deliciously Indulgent Bakery that’s coming in April! I must have added ten pounds just designing this venue. But now that SimGuruTaterTot has posted this exciting new image, let’s grab a cupcake and chat a bit about what all you’re seeing in this picture.
First of all, this is our first look at some of our exciting new Premium Content items, called the Baker’s Bazaar Collection! This includes the Delightful Dessert Display, the Rustic Bakery Rack, the Baker’s Sales Rugs (not pictured) and Sweet Nothing Simoleon Register.
These items allow you to display any food that your Sims can make and sell them similar to the Savvy Seller’s Collection but with a few notable exceptions. To begin with, the Savvy Seller’s Collection restocked items so that Midnight Hollow always had full shelves for your Sims to shop. But with the Bakery it’s your Sims job to create all of the delicious desserts to keep your customers happy. Note that this particular change means that bakeries that aren’t owned by your Sim tend to sell out after a day or so, but that should cut down on too many rival bakers.
Since you don’t want all of that food going bad, the displays are all refrigerated (or in stasis, or using preservatives or whatever helps you feel better about how your food isn’t rotting after a few hours.)
While this venue is a bakery, you can actually sell any food available in the Sims. So if you want to open a Sims Deli, you can make that dream come true!
Making all that food is going to be pretty time consuming, so if you want to hire someone to tend register, you can get that extra help. (FYI: You may notice that we eliminated the notices of Cashiers not being able to make it to work.)
We also have a couple of new rugs that work just like the displays. So you can slide the rugs under counters, tables, etc. and any food placed on top of that item will have all of the sales functionality. This way you can make your bakery your way.
And then there’s the FOOD! Did you see all of that cool new stuff in there? And read all of the Tweets where SimsGuruTaterTot is talking about new recipes that tie directly into the harvestables that shipped with Bohemian Garden? Yeah… we definitely need to grab another cupcake sometime and chat about all of the new food coming with this set. AND the rest of the Premium Content. ‘Cause you ain’t seen nothin’ yet.
