SimCity Blog Post: Engineering SimCity for Offline Play

0

Take a look at what SimCity Producer Simon Fox has to say about Engineering and preparing SimCity for Offline Play!

Hi, I’m Simon Fox, lead engineer on the Single Player Mode for SimCity, and I’m here to tell you more about how we engineered Offline gameplay for SimCity.

When the game released, our fans were calling for Offline. I rallied the team to start making that happen as soon as practical after launch.

REENGINEERING A CREATIVE VISION

The original creative vision for SimCity was to make a game where every action had an effect on other cities in your region. As such, we engineered the game to meet this vision, setting up the player’s PC (client) to communicate all of its information to the servers. That means that our entire architecture was written to support this, from the way that the simulation works to the way that you communicate across a region of cities. So yes, while someone was able to remove the “time check” shortly after launch, they were unable to perform key actions like communicating with other cities that they had created locally, or with the rest of their region(s), or even saving the current state of their cities.

My team did, however, see a path forward towards Offline, one that would maintain the integrity of the simulation. Lucy once said that Offline wouldn’t be possible “without a significant amount of engineering work”, and she’s right. By the time we’re finished we will have spent over 6 ½ months working to write and rewrite core parts of the game to get this to work. Even things that seem trivial, like the way that cities are saved and loaded, had to be completely reworked in order to make this feature function correctly.

REWRITING KEY PIECES

I wish it were as simple as flipping a switch and telling the game to communicate with a dummy client rather than our server, but it’s more than that. Entire calculations had to be rewritten in order to make the game function correctly.

SimCity was written to rely on the servers. The game routinely pings the servers for critical pieces of data (region status, workers, trading etc.) and it relies on that information to keep the simulation moving. This meant rewriting the entire system, which previously existed in Java, and putting it into C++. We’ve had to knock out the internet pipe stuff. There’s lots of code that hits the servers looking for information. We’ve had to write a lot of code to produce that data locally, specifically for region information.

Our game routes pieces of data from one city to another as data flows through the regions. All of that code exists on the server, and now we’ve brought all of that down into the client. The client processes the region box, which is what all of the cities pushes their data into. We’ve brought that down into the client as well.

And now, all of the regional simulation needs to be done locally. The algorithms governing trading between cities needed to be retuned in order to make the behavior between cities more responsive for this type of play. This in itself required major optimizations in order to run the simulation locally. We have an obligation to make the game fun and functional on all specs of machines. We wouldn’t want someone who was enjoying the Multiplayer game to find the Single Player game crippled due to poor optimization.

And it’s not just adding, we had to remove parts of the game for it to function properly as well. This means removing lots of code integral to Multiplayer include code and UI supporting Trading, Social Features, Global Market, Leaderboards and Achievements. And, all without crippling the Multiplayer game.

So where are we at right now? We’ve been working on this since August and now, we’ve hit Alpha and are in the final stages of testing before we release it as part of Update 10 in the future. On behalf of the engineering team, thank you for your patience on this one. We know you want Offline play in SimCity and we are really happy that we are finally getting ready to deliver it to you.

SimCity Offline IS COMING!

Patrick_Buechner_HeadShot_0

Let’s get right to it.

SIMCITY OFFLINE IS COMING!

I’ve wanted to say those words for quite some time, so my apologies that I didn’t take the time to say Happy New Year first.

Yes, Offline is coming as a free download with Update 10 to all SimCity players. When we launch it, all of your previously downloaded content will be available to you anytime, anywhere, without the need for an internet connection. We are in the late phases of wrapping up its development and while we want to get it into your hands as soon as possible, our priority is to make sure that it’s as polished as possible before we release it. So, until then… testing, testing and more testing. As one of the final steps, we’re putting Offline into the hands of some of our most hardcore players, the DevTesters. This group of volunteers is going to put Offline through its paces before we release it.

In Update 10, you can still play solo in Regions on your own, or in Multiplayer with people from around the world. What’s new is the Single Player Mode, which allows you to play the game Offline by yourself. And because your saved games in this mode are stored locally, you can save and load to your heart’s content. Our team will be delivering a follow-up blog that will outline the full details in the near future so stay tuned.

So what does this mean for the Online game? All of the benefits of being connected will remain including access to Multiplayer, the Global Market and Leaderboards. And all of your pre-existing saved cities and regions will still be accessible should you log-in to the Online game.

Bringing the game Offline means big things for our wonderful community of Modders. They can now make modifications to the game and its components without compromising the integrity of the Online game. Modding is a big part of our studio’s legacy and we’re excited to see what you guys create. Check out this thread to learn about Oppie85’s Central Train Station, which you can put into your game right now, and if you’re interested in making your own content take a look at the Modding Policy. To get you started, we will be rolling out a series of tutorials from the studio that surfaces how we’ve created some of the content that you’ve seen so far in hopes of inspiring your creativity.

So that’s it from me for the time being. Keep an eye out for more information on Offline shortly. We’ll be releasing more information on how it all works. And as always, get in touch with me on Twitter @EAGamer, I’m always eager to read your feedback.

From me, and everyone at the studio, thank you again for staying with us. We look forward to getting Offline for SimCity into your hands as soon as possible.

Are you excited for SimCity offline features? We sure are 😀

The Sims 3 Name + Logo + Boxart + Plumbob Concept Art and more!

0

PopGun, designer of the BoxArts and logos that we see in The Sims Franchise today, published several Concept Arts – From The Sims 3 Logo, to The Sims 3 Boxart and Plumbob. As we can see by these concept arts, The Sims 3 was supposed to be ”The Sims World”!

The Sims franchise celebrates more than 10 years as the most successful PC game of all time. Popgun is proud to continue our longstanding relationship as a creative partner in the continually expanding Sims universe.

We have helped define and expand the Sims brand globally with the Sims Global Brand Guide, a resource that ensures that the Sims experience is the same worldwide. Popgun has created a comprehensive and cohesive system for the complete range of franchise packaging applications within the Sims brand: Launch Packs, Expansion Packs, Stuff Packs, Compilations, and Collector’s Editions.

Our reach extends from concept development, keyart, interactive style guide and toolkit assets for licensing applications. Popgun is a fully immersed and fluent brand steward in the Sims franchise, maintaining a strong and consistent framework upon which we build each new generation of the Sims.

Update: PopGun also worked on Sims projects such as The Sims Medieval, The Sims Social and The Sims 3 Showtime – Katy Perry Collector’s Edition.

When reigning Pop Princess and ultimate entertainer Katy Perry unleashed her inimitable style onto The Sims 3 Showtime, Popgun, along with millions of other fans of The Sims couldn’t wait for the show to begin.

The Sims 3 Showtime delivers big time fun, by placing you center stage under the spotlight as a multi-talented performer, charismatic singer, skilled DJ or a mysterious magician. And in The Sims 3 Katy Perry Collector’s Edition you can play as Katy Perry or wear one of her many amazing stage outfits.

In order to bring The Sims 3 Showtime to life, we uncoiled the heavy duty cables and amped up The Sims 3 identity. Then taking on the role of Director, we designed a stage and lighting rig worthy of the always entertaining Ms. Perry.

Finally, the lights dimmed, and all that was left to do was sit back and enjoy the show.

Rich in both imagery and storytelling, The Sims Medieval is the first major offshoot title based on The Sims 3 game engine. Set in Medieval times, it allows the player to build up and rule over a kingdom, by navigating through a series of authentic quests using the Sims trademark brand of mischief as a guide.

We donned the chain mail and following several rounds of jousting, created a title treatment that would family with the existing Sims catalog, as well as stand proudly on its own. Keyart illustration drew upon the game’s highly detailed costumed characters and set them against period inspired heraldic castles and bustling villages.

From sword fights and dancing knights, to romance and witchcraft, the final result is an epic title where fun reigns supreme.

The Sims 4 – More About Emotions

2

SimGuruGraham made a couple of tweets to clarify the misunderstanding about Emotions and how they affect other Sims in The Sims 4.

Being in proximity of color does not impact a Sim’s emotions. Being in a blue room won’t make your Sim sad.

Weaobject, a piece of clothing, or… heck, even your wallpaper… won’t automatically push a nearby Sim into a different emotion.ring a red dress won’t make your Sim flirty. The Sims 4 has never functioned that way.

Our designers can, in specific cases, create objects or special pieces of clothing that enhance an emotion that a Sim is already feeling…

For example, a painting with a sad theme could have an impact on a nearby Sim who is already feeling sad.

The color of an object, a piece of clothing, or… heck, even your wallpaper… won’t automatically push a nearby Sim into a different emotion.

Sims Community’s Year in a Post

0

New Year is just 3 days away and I really wanted to make a post to show my gratitude for amazing 7 months I spent with you Simmers this year.

It all started on 21st of May when I bought the server for Sims Community. I had absolutely no idea which theme should I choose for this site since all of them were somehow ”basic”. I really wanted to make it stand out from other Sims Fansites because I never liked the ”All news on the front page” design.

I found a theme called Minimatica. It’s purpose was to show off other people’s photography and design skill. I really wanted to give it a try since for some reason I loved the theme.

After several days the process of re-furbishing our site was over, and this was the final result:

981872_533580870033824_1683194772_o

To me, it looked perfectly fine, but to others it was a disaster. I took some feedback from my friends and Simmers and after 2-3 months of Sims Community going live this is how it looked:

1064918_550317765026801_428404332_o

Well, that’s enough of Sims Community’s History. Let’s talk about what we have now:

We temporarily updated the design of our site to celebrate the coming of 2014. The background is showing all important Announcements/Releasements that were made in 2013.

CaptureI want to thank Digitto, DOTSim and Sims True Life for supporting my site – this site wouldn’t be where it is today without them!

Also, I really want to thank all my friends on Twitter and Facebook for supporting our site.

And last, but not least, I want to thank my followers on all Social Networks that read and like our posts and pages. This site wouldn’t exist without them!

What we have in plan for 2014?

First Issue of our Magazine is supposed to release in January. With some help of our Co-Directors and Simmers who are ready to share their stories, the creating of this Magazine won’t be hard at all.

The Sims 4 is releasing in Fall/Autumn. With that being said, we think that Simmers and us will have enough time to make a huge jump from The Sims 3 to The Sims 4. Some of them will refuse to make that jump, but we’ll still be posting The Sims 3 News and Guides.

Who knows what other news will happen in 2014? I guess it’s up to us to wait and find out…

Happy New Year from Sims Community Team!

The Sims 4 Possible Concept Arts

12

Tony Ianiro, Concept Artist and Visual Developer for The Sims 4, published some interesting artwork in his portofolio. We don’t say that this is The Sims 4 Concept Art, but if you take a close look, these concept arts have Art Style that reminds me a lot to The Sims 4.

Update: Tony privated his portofolio that included possible concept arts for The Sims 4!

Tony Ianiro:

• Created full environment paintings using Maya and Photoshop.
• Created stylized concept art of houses (exterior and interior walls, floors and portals designs), world objects, interior objects and vehicles for in house and outsourcing.
• Hand painting textures in Photoshop CS5 and helped to create the overall “look” of the game
• Collaborated with designers, world builders, 3D artists to create environments
• Helped teach other concept artists on the team how to create accurate drawings and designs for architecture using Maya and Photoshop.

Update: Honeywell’s Sims 4 blog and a Mod The Sims Member pointed out the fact that the OFFICIAL concept art of the Cupcake Machine has the same font and layout as the riverboat concept art.

Also, if you take a close look to some of the Concept Art of Houses, you’ll notice that they look a lot like houses from the leaked UI Screen of The Sims 4. Coincidence? You decide!

ANNOUNCING: Sims Community Magazine!

0

magazinelogotransparent

I’m happy to announce our latest project that’s currently in development – Sims Community Magazine! In the last month we’ve been working really hard to create just a concept of this Magazine. My biggest task was to make it unique, which means it had to stand out from The Sims Official Magazine.

This Magazine won’t be made by just 1-2 people. It’s task is to show how other Simmers think about a certain aspect of this Community or about a certain aspect of Sims. That’s where you come along. If you want to participate in this Magazine, you’ll need to create and tell various stories and moments from both Real Life and Sims.

Sections for Sims Community Magazine will be announced on 29th of December. After they’re announced, you can e-mail us with your reportage for a section you’d like to participate in.

Right now, I’m looking for 1-2 people (Co-Directors) that are willing to help me out with the general concept of this magazine.

Co-Director Requirements:

  • Good English Language Knowledge
  • Creativity
  • In this Community for at least 1 year

If you want to become a Co-Director, send us your application on our e-mail: contactsimscommunity@gmail.com with a few sentences on your skills and qualities.

And now, I’m proud to present the cover of our first Issue of our Magazine that will be releasing somewhere around January 2014. Please note that some sections and pictures may change on our final cover.
