Mean Girls and Clueless Have Made Their Way to The Sims 4: A Double Dose of Nostalgic Style

Just over a week ago, The Sims 4 announced its collaboration with two iconic chick‑flicks, Mean Girls and Clueless. With it comes a pair of new Capsule Kits; essentially regular Kits, just smaller in item count and a little cheaper. Not only have we been treated to two themed Kits, but the EA App has also had a full Mean Girls glow‑up to mark the occasion.

Both Kits bring a selection of new nineties and noughties‑inspired styles for your Sims to rock up to school in, along with two new deco items each to round out the theme. So, let’s take a look at both The Sims 4 Mean Girls Kit and The Sims 4 Clueless Kit and see exactly what they have to offer. Our Review of The Sims 4 Mean Girls Capsule Kit

Of course, being British, my Mean Girls was St Trinians, but I can’t deny that Mean Girls doesn’t take second place when it comes to early‑2000s teen comedies. When these Kits were announced, I was conflicted. While I would rather have original content that is actually needed in the game (and not in the form of a brand collaboration), I was still excited at the prospect of a Mean Girls Kit. Even upon reveal, I knew the Create‑A‑Sim pieces would have a wide range of uses, unlike, say, the Bridgerton and SpongeBob Kits, which have a much smaller range of everyday use.

Speaking of my thoughts upon the reveal, I did find it off‑putting that the Kit has so little to offer, considering the usual amount of items we receive. Shortly after, it was confirmed that, being Capsule Kits, both would have a lower price tag than Kits usually do, and for that, I can live with it.

But what do I actually think of the items now they are in my game? Let's take a look!

The Create‑A‑Sim items feel usable in everyday gameplay for the most part. A few swatches feel out of place, such as the boob cutout top, a recreation of the moment in the film when all the girls at school cut holes in their T‑shirts because Regina did. The Christmas outfits worn by the Plastics during the talent show are another example of something I will never use. In fact, players who own The Sims 4 Seasons will already have a similar outfit in their library.

The rest of what Create‑A‑Sim has to offer is filled with items I can see myself using to style my Sims. The meshes, while not as high‑quality as recent Expansion Packs, do the job and don’t need to be extravagant.
I sound like a broken record, I know, but Create‑A‑Sim is still lacking in items for the male outfit preference category. This doesn’t come as a surprise with today’s two new Kits, as both are based on films centred around female characters. The only “male” item is Damien’s “She doesn’t even go here” hoodie, another piece that would look out of place in regular gameplay. I hope to the Sims gods that this is not enabled for townie random outfit generation.

I may sound negative, but those negatives are weighed equally with positives. If I wasn’t reviewing this Kit, would I purchase it for my own collection? No.

Players who like the Y2K style, which still seems to be all the rage with Gen Z, will enjoy what the Mean Girls Kit has to offer. And while little references to the film are nice, they’re only nice for a second before you realise: “When am I actually going to use this in game?” The same goes for the Build/Buy items, of which there are only a measly two. You can’t have Mean Girls without the Burn Book, and while it’s fun to have in game, I’m never pulling this item out of the catalogue again. The 'That’s So Fetch Wall Decals' have much more versatility. As you can see from the swatch overview above, there’s enough variety to keep reusing them across different builds, and when the Kit was first revealed, I was worried the item was simply going to be a North Shore High School banner.

If you haven't seen Mean Girls, then I implore you to go and watch it. It may even sway you to add this Kit to your collection. For the cheaper price tag of $3.99 (When compared to normal Kits), what is on offer seems like a pretty good deal.

Our Review of The Sims 4 Clueless Capsule Kit

While I’m a fan of Mean Girls, Clueless has never been a film I’ve personally connected with. Even so, it’s a fun classic, and much like the Mean Girls Kit, the everyday‑use potential here is broad. Unlike Mean Girls, Clueless is set in the mid‑nineties and has a very distinct costuming style. On that note, the items in this Kit feel a little closer to costumes than everyday clothing you’d naturally use in gameplay. That isn’t me saying the Kit is bad, just that I’m less likely to reach for these pieces when outfitting my Sims.

Let's take a look at what I think of The Sims 4 Clueless Capsule Kit!

As with the Mean Girls Kit, the mesh quality leaves something to be desired. When compared to the recent Bridgerton Kit, this Kit falls short. The textures, on the other hand, look about on par with the rest of the game. While not CC‑quality, it’s important to remember that this is a game from 2014, and still needs to run on PS4 and Xbox One.

The looks on offer are great, but when compared to the Mean Girls Kit, I can’t see myself using these items all that much. The cardigan and socks, sure, maybe I’d use them. But the iconic two‑piece sets worn by Cher and Dionne in the film would feel too out of place, and would make my Sims look like they’re cosplaying rather than wearing items from their own wardrobe.

That has to be my biggest gripe with brand collaborations. When an item is so iconic to a franchise, or emblazoned with a brand logo, it pulls me right out of the immersion of the game. I can see myself using maybe a few items, notably the 'Shopping Therapy' deco bags, but the rest of what’s on offer feels too gimmicky.

For players looking for 90s styles for their game, this is perfect, but don't go in expecting too much versatility.

The Sims 4 Mean Girls Capsule Kit and The Sims 4 Clueless Capsule Kit are both available now on the EA App, Steam, and Epic Games Store for PC and Mac, and on PlayStation and Xbox via their respective store and the in-game Marketplace. The Kits cost $3.99 each or your local equivalent.
