EA banned My Wedding Stories in Russia for the wrong reasons

26

Hello all. I just want to let you know that I won’t be covering Early Access content. You can read my full statement in the twitter thread below:

Why the decision to ban Wedding Stories in Russia is not about the defense of LGBTQ+ rights

Written by @SimplyHao – lawyer in Russia

The only Russian law that somehow limits the distribution of LGBTQ+-related content is art. 6.21 of the Code of the Russian Federation on Administrative Offenses. This article speaks about the propaganda of non-traditional sexual relationships to underage.

The age of the legal majority in Russia is 18. Thus, all content that contains the depiction of LGBT+ neutrally or positively must be labeled as 18+ according to Russian law. Please note that this is an administrative offense and not a crime. The worst consequence of this offense is an administrative fine of 1 mln RUB (approx. 13 000 USD) and the suspension of activity for 90 days. But the latest is rarely used because it is easier to hand out a fine.

There are some additional restrictions for the distribution of such content. Any printed product with the age restriction must not contain the prohibited for children imagery in the places generally allowed for children. There are no additional demands for the content published on the Internet – just label it properly.

Now let’s speak about the probable legal risks for EA.

The Sims games were labeled as 18+ in Russia from the base game. So, every part of the game, every pack and kit is labeled as 18+. Wedding stories are no exception. Trailers on the Internet – just put an 18+ label in the start as they do in cinemas, then proceed. All Russian trailers of the Sims have an age restriction label in the corner of the video that appears at the start. The same would be applied to the Wedding stories.

The trailer of the Dream home decorator has included the kid’s room with the trans pride flag – and no one cared. The trailer of the Cats and dogs has included the gay wedding – and no one cared. Why it would be different for Wedding stories? Just. Put. The label. That’s all.

Pictures on the Internet – just put an 18+ label on the picture and the web page.

The Russian version of the news about the Carnaval Streetwear Kit includes the imagery that, in terms of Russian law, must be 18+. No one cared. The Russian version of the news about the Modern Menswear Kit contains pictures of guys in skirts. No one cared. Every year the Russian version of the news talks about Pride month and praises all the LGBTQ+ simmers and sims with the fitting pictures. No one cared!

Everything about the Sims on the Russian version of the EA website is labeled as 18+. Why it would be different for Wedding stories? Just. Put. The label. That’s all.

So, we are left with the distribution of the material copies of the game on the disks. As far as I know, the Sims game in Russia is distributed mainly in digital. I googled briefly, and haven’t found any latest addons on disks at all. But even if they are – the Sims don’t need to change the whole image. They could make, for example, an additional wrapper just with Wedding Stories written on it and the disk case without any changes inside. It would be okay.

I have seen some tweets about the “Russian Constitution declares that marriage can be only between man and woman”. It is true. But! This is not about the media content and never has been. It is about, like. Literal marriages. Between real people in Russia. Not about some game that allows same-sex marriages in a fictional world mainly based on the US reality. So, according to all of the above, there are no legal risks for EA to drop the Wedding Stories for us. It is not illegal. It is not prohibited.

I also want you to consider that the English version of the EA announcement contains information that the ban is because of the Russian federal laws. The Russian version DOES NOT HAVE THIS INFORMATION.

For those of you who condone what EA did because “it is wrong that the game is labeled as 18+ because of the LGBT content”. Yes, it is. But I want you to consider that the demand to label the content is the most harmless impact of this law.

The law is used mainly for the oppression and erasure of LGBTQ+ rights organizations and initiatives. Films, books, and games at the moment are not persecuted for the LGBTQ+ content until it is labeled. The law does not demand to censor or cut out anything if it is labeled.

All the recent cases of censorship and cuts were about self-censorship in fear of backlash – not about some demand of the Russian government. And this is what EA does – just self-censors itself.

For all these years since 2014, The Sims games were labeled as 18+. No content ever have been cut out or altered. Every LGBTQ+ sims remained that way. All same-sex in-game families remained that way. How are Wedding Stories any different?

For those of you who think that if we still have this government and this law we approve all of this – no, we are not. A lot of people protested about the law from the beginning. But, unfortunately, we live under an authoritarian regime that gets harsher every day. The protests are fiercely repressed. The further explanations will require a whole new huge thread because there are a lot of factors that led to the situation we are in. Just, please, don’t think that you know our political situation better than we do. Listen to those who are oppressed. We know better.

The defense of human rights never should be for the sake of some abstract conceptions. The Sims team in their letter says, that this decision is for the protection of LGBTQ+ rights. But whom do they protect? Human rights don’t just hang out there in the air. They belong to people and this decision does nothing for the protection of the LGBTQ+ rights of the western people except virtue-signaling. Moreover, this decision does nothing for the protection of the LGBTQ+ rights of Russian people. The Sims games help a lot of us to escape from the reality.

To live in a world where everyone is equal, where there is no hate or prejudice towards different social groups. A lot of people have explored and understood their sexuality through the game. A lot of people stopped being homophobic because of the game – they subsequently just grew used to the conception of the world that the Sims games suggest.

We, the LGBTQs and allies in Russia, are constantly fighting for our rights and freedom to be ourselves. And the games like The Sims have been always showing to us – you are not alone. You are great as you are.

And when the Sims team decides to ban the Wedding Stories from Russia it hurts. Not only the decision itself but how it was made. All the letter is about the importance of the story shown in the addon. Nothing about us, the players. Nothing that stated – hey, we know you are out there. We are deeply sorry. Keep fighting. We will try and see what we can do for you. Just…nothing. It still would be a strange decision but at least it would show that they care.

If the Sims were really trying to protect us, to help us, there could be so many ways. They could have decided to transfer some of the gains of the Wedding Stories to the Russian LGBTQ+ rights organizations, for example. They could have reached out to the Russian LGBTQ+ simmers and make some content with them. Make some news materials, podcasts, in-game content. But they did literally nothing.

That’s why from our perspective the whole move is about looking good in the eyes of the western simmers. Who cares about Russia, right, it is a small and poor market. Who cares, that this decision will affect not only Russia but the other CIS (Commonwealth of Independent Countries) too.

And what about Ukraine? Will they get the pack? No one knows. And this is very unjust. Russia does not deserve this, but other countries don’t deserve this even more. And it appears, no one cares about them.

Please, The Sims, reconsider your decision. We deserve better.

The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Livestream Summary

The Sims Team showed off the new My Wedding Stories game pack in a livestream today that covered some gameplay aspects, the new world, and a very brief glimpse at CAS and Build/Buy.

As usual, we were there to compile all the info for you! Check out everything we found out during the livestream below!

New World

  • The new world is called Tartosa and is inspired by various coastal Mediterranean locations

Sequence 01.00 06 16 23.Still020

  • Tartosa is a residential world but Sims can choose to vacation there through the use of rental lots
  • The world is large for a game pack world with 2 neighbourhoods and 9 lots. All lots are fully editable and were built by GameChangers.
  • There are 2 starter homes, 2 NPC households, a vacation rental, a lounge, one wedding venue and 2 empty lots.
  • The Gallery will have five additional wedding venue lots available to place down in Tartosa or wherever else you like.
  • Both neighbourhoods have lots of picturesque locations for romantic moments between your Sims and for pictures.
  • Many landmarks and features of Tartosa have lore attached to them, such as the Lover’s Tree and the bioluminescent algae that glows in the water in certain locations at night.
  • The beaches in Tartosa are swimmable locations for our Sims. They will receive special buffs for swimming in Tartosa.
  • The two NPC households that live in Tartosa have an existing relationship and lore between each other.
  • The two Sims from the reveal trailer, Cam and Dom, live in Tartosa. Cam is a painter and will tell your Sims where all the best scenic locations in Tartosa are if you befriend her. Dom is the town historian and the person to go to if you’re interested in learning more about Tartosa’s lore.
  • New sand interactions on the beaches in Tartosa. Kids can play in the sand and older Sims can draw in the sand. Two Sims can draw hearts together in the sand for a romantic moment between them.
  • There are food vendors in Tartosa that sell different cultural foods. More foods will be there depending on what packs you own.
  • There are many beautiful visual effects in Tartosa, like fireflies near the waterfall bridge at night and frogs jumping around in the water.

Gameplay

  • There are six new social events that your Sims can throw related to weddings. Engagement Dinners, Rehearsal Dinners, Bach Parties, Wedding Ceremonies, Wedding Receptions, and Family Gatherings. The Family Gathering event is meant to encapsulate any culture’s traditional ways of celebrating before a wedding. Most of these new social events were not shown in the livestream; only the Wedding Ceremony and Reception were shown.
  • There is also a Vow Renewal event but this will only be available to Sims who are already married.
  • Wedding events can be created via the computer, phone, or calendar. Scheduling a wedding event via the computer or phone starts the event immediately but these events can be planned in advance using the calendar.
  • When you plan a wedding, you can select your Sim of Honour, an Officiant, a Flower Pal, and a Ring Bearer for your wedding party. These roles can be chosen through the wedding planning menu but Sims can also ask their friends and family to be in their wedding through gameplay. Family and friends of the engaged couple may also approach your Sims and ask them if they can be in the wedding party.
  • The kinds of traditions and activities at your wedding are fully customizable. You will be able to select the activities that will take place at your wedding, such as cake cutting, first kiss, etc. Wedding traditions that don’t suit your Sims’ lifestyle or culture don’t need to be a part of the wedding. It’s up to you.
  • When selecting the style of your wedding, you can see a preview of the cake you’ve chosen and select the attire of your guests as well as the attire of your engaged couple. The cake can only be chosen through gameplay but having the preview in the Style tab of the wedding planning menu can help you match attire to the cake’s colour theme. Attire can be chosen in the menu but Sims can also pick their wedding attire at the interactable shell boutique located in Tartosa.
  • Sims can get married in all the same locations they previously could as well as at any of the new wedding venues coming with this pack. The location can also be selected in advance when going through the event planning screen.
  • There is a flower stand in Tartosa where Sims can purchase flowers. They can also pick out their wedding bouquet here. Wedding bouquets can be taken out of the Sim inventory and displayed as a keepsake.
  • The Sim who runs the flower stand does not live in the world but he is a special NPC your Sims can get to know and get information from.
  • The patisserie stand in Tartosa is where your Sims can taste wedding cake samples and choose the type of cake they want to have at their wedding. There are 9 different cake shapes but many more styles and colours within those 9 shapes of cake.
  • There are a few special cakes for occults, such as plasma cake for vampires.
  • Wedding cakes can also be purchased through the computer or your Sims can make their own wedding cake through the Gourmet Cooking skill.
  • Wedding toppers for your wedding cake can also be selected. There are SO many new cake toppers that there are filters to find them easier in the selection menu. Cake toppers can have inscriptions added to them and can be kept as keepsakes after the wedding.
  • If all this wedding planning is too much for your Sims, they can elope at City Hall.
  • During the Wedding Ceremony, an Activity List will show up in the left top corner listing all the activities you selected previously. Hovering over them will give you a tooltip with information about how to complete them.
  • When the wedding starts, you can tell guests to take their seats and send specific Sims down the aisle in the order you’d like them to walk down the aisle.
  • Wedding guests will react to the vows being exchanged.
  • There are new animations to make the vows extra emotional. There are also different kiss outcomes; sometimes Sims will go in for a kiss and end up bonking their heads.
  • Sending Sims up the aisle vs down the aisle will send Sims in different directions so make sure you know which way your wedding aisle is facing. The wedding aisle has a heart symbol in Build/Buy to indicate which side of the aisle is the starting point.
  • Group interactions help control the flow of the wedding so you can make sure your wedding guests are doing important activities together instead of just wandering about doing their own thing.
  • Married couples will now cut the cake together in a proper ceremony. The cake cutting also has different outcomes.
  • There are new dance styles including group dancing and slow dancing. Adults can dance with kids while holding their hands. There are also different interactions you can do within the dance. Depending on the Sims’ relationship with each other, some of these actions might get rejected.
  • There are two new tea sets that are functional! One in an English style and one in a Chinese style. Each one has 3 swatches. There are lots of tea options. Sims can steep, pour, and serve the tea. If you have tea during a wedding event, there are some special ceremonial aspects to it like bowing/kneeling but tea can also be served casually outside of a formal setting.
  • New collection! Sims can collect messages in a bottle! Sometimes mounds pop up in the sand and your Sims can dig them up o find a message in a bottle. There are 20 different ones with fun messages inside and the bottles can all be displayed.

CAS

  • Lots of new formal dresses from different cultures, all with white, red, and other swatches.
  • New swatches added to base game dresses coming with the patch.
  • We can add boutonnieres to wedding outfits! They’re under necklaces.
  • Child girls have more colours for one of the free holiday DLC dresses. There’s also a child suit with new colours.
  • Kids have a lot of the same new hairs as adults.
  • We did not see any proper wedding veils in CAS as in, veils that can be added to any hair as hats. We only know of the one veil pictured on the box art which is attached to the hairstyle.

Build/Buy

  • There are two buffet tables with the same foods that the Tartosa food vendors serve. There is also a drink fountain that can be laced on top of either buffet table.
  • Wedding chairs have floral and non-floral options.
  • New bar and bar back with shelving space.
  • New piano.
  • Three different lengths of wedding aisles. Aisles have a square outline that goes invisible in live mode with a heart symbol to signify where the start of the aisle is. There are decorations that you can add to dress up the aisle.
  • New stained glass windows, Mediterranean windows, doors, and arches. Open windows without glass.
  • New dance floor.
  • New styled rooms.
  • New lounge chairs that are portable.
  • 6 person round table.
  • 5 new wedding arches and some new swatches on base game arches are being added as well. The new base game arch swatches will come free in the patch.
  • Pergolas and wedding tents that can be placed close together to create larger and more elaborate tent/cover setups.
  • There’s a new base game wedding venue being added to the Gallery.

Planning a Wedding in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories

3

Everything we know so far!

The Sims Team has just wrapped up their Livestream for The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Game Pack! In the livestream they’ve shared plenty of details regarding Wedding Planning and what you can do to plan out your perfect wedding!

We transcribed the details from SimGuruRad and SimGuruMorgan where they went more in-depth regarding Wedding Planning. Take a look at all that goes into Weddings now!

In the Add Wedding Event, we have 7 events! You will see six here and one additional event which is Vowel Renewal which will only show up after you’re married. Right now our Sims are only engaged and so this is what they’ll see.

We have our Bach Party which is that traditional last night out. We wanted to go for a more gender neutral Bach Party, not specifically Bachelor or Bachelorette Party. No gender lines here!

Sequence 01.00 08 24 44.Still002

We have a Rehersal Dinner which is the chance together before the wedding. An Engagement Dinner which is celebrating that engagement moment. The Wedding Ceremony and the Reception afterwards.

We have the other one which is the Family gathering. We know that weddings look different from family to family so this was the perfect event to be a catch-all. Whatever a family gathering would look like for your Sims. Whether it’s really casual or you just hang out at the beach! Or something more formal and traditional, Chinese-inspired tea ceremony that you want to invite your family to. We felt like this can meet any cultures’ expectations for what a Family Gathering might be. You can host at any time throughout the wedding process!

Sequence 01.00 09 14 03.Still006

Invite Sims

We are going to plan a Wedding Ceremony and I want to show you how this is special. First off there’s the invite Sims panel which should look fairly similar. But, what’s special about these weddings is that you can select Sims of Honor, an Officiant, a Flower Pal and a Ring Bearer. In game you’re going to go and ask someone “Hey, would you be my Flower Pal?”.

There are also a few Sims that can ask “I would like to be your Sim of Honor for your Wedding”. You can do that for both directions! That will be for Sims that are engaged.

Last we have our guest panel (you can choose 15 guests maximum).

Sequence 01.00 09 58 14.Still008

Select Activities

The next biggest thing is “Select an Activity”. This is the core of our Wedding Events and what we’re trying to do here is that we’re trying to let you select the things that are right for your Sims, the couples that you’re playing with.

Sequence 01.00 11 39 39.Still011

Here is a full list of activities that you can perform at the wedding:

  • Exchange Vows
  • Have Speeches
  • Cut Cake
  • Walk Down the Aisle
  • Have Toasts
  • Throw Rice
  • Blow Bubbles
  • Tea
  • First Dance
  • Spousal Kiss
  • Drinks
  • Dancing
  • Celebration Feast

Planning a Wedding in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories

It’s really about choosing and molding this event to what you and your Sims want.

Select Style

This is a place where you get to see how your wedding comes together. We select the cake, also in gameplay. You’re not going to select it in the User Interface but there’s a tooltip on how to select the cake for the Wedding.

Selecting a Cake for the wedding: After you’ve finished scheduling the wedding ceremony, click on a cake that has been purchased or made and Select as Cake for Wedding Ceremony. This cake can be replaced by running the same interaction on a different cake.

With the Guest Attire option you can select the color. (You can also let people come into their own attire). For Guest Attire category you also have a Dress Code option, letting you choose different clothing styles that your Sims can come to the wedding!

We have our Edit Outfit which will allow you to select the Formal outfit for your wedding couple. You can select it here which will take you to CAS. We also have a Building in town which lets you do that.

Sequence 01.00 12 16 58.Still013

Select a Place

This category is self-explanatory – you can select the Time and Location for your wedding!

Sequence 01.00 13 12 09.Still001

Edit the Event Afterwards

After choosing the details for your Wedding Event you can always go back to The Calendar and edit the details that you’ve put in. That’s of course possible before the day of the wedding!

First Information on The Sims 4’s upcoming Base Game Update

9

As you all know The Sims Team releases new content drops with each Pack release for The Sims 4, and with My Wedding Stories releasing next week we already have some insight on what to expect!

During the My Wedding Stories livestream The Sims Team revealed that some wedding, formal dresses and outfits are getting new colors added into The Sims 4 Base Game! Unfortunately they weren’t revealed in the livestream so we can expect to see them sometime next week.

It also seems like some Base Game wedding items are also getting new swatches. The Base Game arches are getting new colors. We don’t know which ones and how many though.

Also coming in the upcoming update? A new lot type!

Your Sims finally won’t have to get married in the Park, or even worse a Cafe. There will now be a Wedding Venue lot type where you can officiate your weddings!

Sequence 01.00 13 12 09.Still001

SimGuruNinja also shared the news on Twitter, saying that this is going to make searching for Wedding lots on The Gallery a whole lot easier:

Another important addition with next week’s patch is a new Relationship addition in Create A Sim. Yes, it seems The Sims Team is finally looking into adding new Relationship options!

Ninja revealed that the Base Game Update will let you set fiance in Create A Sim:

There’s probably more things coming to The Sims 4 Base Game next week that The Sims Team hasn’t revealed yet. Stay tuned on our website to be the first to know when the patch drops!

The Sims 4 Scenario Playthrough: Power Couple

The recent SDX drop dumped a tonne of neat goodies into our games, including two new scenarios! The new scenarios are Celebrate Carnaval and Power Couple. Power Couple is a permanent scenario that’s here to stay forever but Celebrate Carnaval is a limited-time scenario.

Here’s how our Power Couple scenario playthrough went!

Starting the Scenario

The Sims 4 Scenario Playthrough: Power Couple
As usual, we selected the New Scenario option on the main menu and selected the Power Couple scenario to see all of the info on it. Unlike a lot of past scenarios, players don’t need to worry about starting this one before a certain date. This is a permanent scenario that’s here to stay for good!

The description states that a married couple who are both in business together are having a competition between themselves to see who can become CEO first. The household requires 2 Young Adult or older Sims who are not related to each other. Both Sims in the scenario will start out in the Business career as Assistant Managers (Level 4) and start with some skills relevant to their careers.

There are three possible outcomes. In other words, three different ways to complete the scenario. You only have to do one of the tasks to complete the scenario, not all three.

  • Both Sims become CEOs
  • One Sim becomes a CEO, the other becomes an Angel Investor
  • The Sims get a divorce

We were pretty intrigued by these possible outcomes! They sounded like they’d be a decent challenge with some room to tell our our own stories alongside the career grind.

The Ultimate Power Couple

The Sims 4 Scenario Playthrough: Power Couple
Normally, we just randomise two nondescript Sims in CAS and jump right in but not this time. This time, we knew exactly who we wanted our power couple to be. Who could be more perfect for a power couple scenario than the ultimate, OG Sims power couple; Bella and Mortimer Goth?! Absolute legends!

Of course, scenarios are not currently set up to allow us to start a new scenario with an existing household so we had to first save Bella and Mortimer to our library. Then when we started the scenario and entered CAS, we imported them from our library. Sadly, Cassandra and Alexander had to go in order to meet the household requirements but it was probably for the best. We’d be focusing heavily on their parents’ careers so the poor kids might have ended up being neglected. Interestingly, the game would not allow us to start the scenario if Bella and Mortimer were married. We had to set them as housemates but when we did start the scenario, they were married and both had the happy Just Married moodlet.

Just like the description said, Bella and Mortimer were both Assistant Managers in the Business career and had all the skills they needed for that current rank in the career. Even though this gave us a solid start, we still had a lot of work cut out for us. CEO is level 9 of the Manager branch and Angel Investor is level 10 of the Investor branch. Getting to the top levels of a career does take some time and dedication and we had to do it for two Sims. We always pick the most challenging outcome for these scenarios so we decided Bella would become a CEO and Mortimer would become an Angel Investor. Of course, we could have gone down the divorce route but that seemed like a bit of a cop-out. You could technically just divorce your spouse on the spot and instantly complete the scenario. A good way to make an easy 5,000 satisfaction points for your Sims but not as fun. Still, we appreciate the divorce option for the drama potential.

The Sims 4 Scenario Playthrough: Power Couple
Since this was going to be a challenge, we decided to speed things along a little by permanently keeping Bella and Mortimer’s motives maxed out with MCCC so we could do a speed run for this article and just skill grind non-stop. They gained all of their skills without any cheats involved, however. They both had to file paperwork as their daily task so we bought them a computer. Logic and Charisma were the two skills they had to focus on. When Bella was doing paperwork on the computer, Mortimer was practicing his speaking skills in the mirror or playing chess and vice versa. We also made sure they were in the ideal emotion for those activities to build these skills faster. Pondering Moves at the chess board is a fast way to become Focused for the Logic skill. Brushing your teeth and psyching yourself up in the mirror are both fast and easy ways to become Confident for the Charisma skill.

A Curveball

The Sims 4 Scenario Playthrough: Power Couple
For a while, everything seemed to be smooth sailing. Bella and Mortimer had a routine going and they were regularly coming home with promotion after promotion. They both managed to become Senior Managers at the exact same pace. This race to CEO was neck and neck so far. Nothing could stop them… until Bella started feeling sick in the mornings and decided to take a pregnancy test. Bella has the Romantic trait so she becomes Lovelorn easily if she isn’t getting enough romance often enough but neither of them have a lot of time for romance with their demanding jobs. The fastest way to make the uncomfortable Lovelorn moodlet go away? A quick WooHoo with her husband. Frequent quick WooHoos with her husband.

The Sims 4 Scenario Playthrough: Power Couple
The pregnancy test came back positive! Bella and Mortimer were having a baby! It was a bit of a shock for them but they were happy, nonetheless. Bella had absolutely no plans to slow down or put her career on hold. Neither her nor Mortimer took any family leave and as soon as Cassandra was born (of course we named her Cassandra!), a full-time nanny was hired. They were delighted about the arrival of their daughter but nothing was going to derail their career ambitions.

Curiously, as soon as Bella became pregnant, Mortimer started receiving promotions faster than her even though she was working just as hard as her husband with just as high work performance and all skills and tasks completed. Yeesh, workplace discrimination exists even in The Sims? Lame…

Invested Partners

But Bella bounced back quickly after Cassandra was born and eventually overtook her husband’s lead! We have to admit, this whole race to the top was starting to get exciting. And long. In fact, seasons came and went and Cassandra grew from a baby, to a toddler, and then to a child before we finished this scenario!

TS4 x64 2022 02 10 16 51 03
In spite of falling behind back when she was pregnant with Cassandra, Bella was the first to get promoted to CEO which technically makes her the winner of this marital competition. However, Mortimer went into the opposite career branch to become an Angel Investor, which is one level higher than CEO and he wasn’t far behind his wife in making it to the top of the Business career.

Honestly, we’d consider them both winners. They truly are the OG Power Couple of The Sims Series.

Our Thoughts

TS4 x64 2022 02 10 16 16 36
All-in-all, this scenario took us a whopping 23 days to complete, even doing a speed run with maxed motives! After a string of disappointing scenarios that were so easy, they weren’t even worth doing, we were so happy to finally play through a scenario with a decent challenge that kept us playing for a good long while.

Having to make it to the top levels of one of the most demanding base game careers with two Sims provided us with hours of entertainment. Even though we were speeding our way through it as fast as possible, it still took us a good chunk of time. This means that if we weren’t grinding, the scenario could have gone on even longer with more opportunities to develop our own twists and turns to the story. Both career-focused outcomes were a great challenge and gave players enough play time to really get invested in their Sims and maybe have some unexpected things happen along the way! Even the divorce option, which could easily just be done instantly, is a nice addition to the scenario for the element of drama it adds. Sure, you could just divorce your Sims right away, collect your satisfaction points and move on. Or you could really develop a whole story around it and have things eventually end in a messy divorce in spite of their best efforts to reach the top together.

This is honestly the first scenario we’ve gotten in a while that we could get excited about and recommend checking out. Especially because of the refreshing lack of glitches! Not only was the scenario fun and challenging in itself but it worked properly! Wow! Amazing! Truly revolutionary!

The Sims 4’s latest Game Pack is banned in Russia

…and I’m proudly angry at the world, and Russia’s laws.

To be honest, it was an exciting announcement day for The Sims 4 to me. A bit more exciting than usual after seeing that, for the first time in forever, The Sims Team is including a Lesbian couple for the main cover of a Sims Pack.

This type of LGBTQ+ representation just wasn’t present there in The Sims Franchise, at least in the beginnings of the game. In the first waves of The Sims releases all there ever was the codable possibility of having same-sex relationships in the game. Having them publicly put on display? Wasn’t a thing. Not really because EA and Maxis didn’t support the LGBTQ+ community (Will Wright was all for gay rights since day 1, might I say!). However, there was always a question which amount of backlash The Sims Team would get for publicly showing support for the community.

You could see some first hints at LGBTQ+ households in some of The Sims 3 Worlds, however they wouldn’t be added in until the game’s ending cycle. The real story begins with The Sims 4, where more and more proper LGBTQ+ representation is shown.

I’ve been doing a deep dive research and writing for an upcoming article series regarding LGBTQ+ representation in Video Games and why is it so important for our community. However, the story I was developing was abruptly stopped by a surprising cover reveal of the upcoming The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Game Pack.

The Sims 4’s latest Game Pack is banned in Russia

LGBTQ+ characters on a Pack Cover for The Sims 4? My guess that this isn’t the first time EA has done this for The Sims. The first time it happened was very subtle. The Sims 4’s Base Game cover refresh has teasingly shown affection between two female characters. Still, some might say that they were just roomates…

The Sims 4’s latest Game Pack is banned in Russia

Another attempt at LGBTQ+ representation was done through the cover Box Art of The Sims 4 Realm of Magic Game Pack. Morgyn Ember, the main character in the center of the Box Art is rumored to be a non-binary character. Although they have been set as a Male Sim through The Sims 4’s CAS settings, the character has a feminine frame applied in the Gender Customization Options.

We’re crossing our fingers here that Morgyn gets an accurate update with the upcoming Customizable Pronouns feature!

The Sims 4’s latest Game Pack is banned in Russia

However, there is another, last rumored LGBTQ+ representation of characters in a Game Pack. Those are the background male Sims in the cover of The Sims 4 Dream Home Decorator Game Pack. They aren’t displaying any affection nor love in the cover, but it’s rumored that Patina, the home decorator, has done her magic for the lovely couple.

The Sims 4’s latest Game Pack is banned in Russia

All of the examples you’ve seen above are just hints at LGBTQ+ representation. Nothing shown fully confirms that they are LGBTQ+ Sims. Although that wouldn’t be so important to the majority of people who are used to cis straight representation in covers, having Queer characters on the cover means a lot to the vast majority of LGBTQ+ players who play the game, including myself.

That’s why I was so happy to see that the first cover for a Sims 4 Pack has featured love for what it is. Of course, that love is still illegal in many parts of the world – including Russia where The Sims 4 is localized and sold.

Before digging into the cover of My Wedding Stories and why it might be so shocking for Russia, we have to go back to 2014 when The Sims 4 Base Game was first released.

Due to The Sims Franchise’s general nature of allowing any two consenting characters to fall in love, The Sims 4 was no different. Unfortunately Russia had a problem with consensual love, making The Sims 4, a T for Teen game, rated as an 18+ game. You heard that right – two characters kissing is rated the same as blood, violence and gore displayed in many franchises (like Grand Theft Auto).

18+ rating (of The Sims 4) has been assigned in accordance with the law number 436-FZ ‘On the protection of children from information harmful to their health and development.

The Sims Russia

Gita Jackson from VICE further explained how serious the “Gay Propaganda” law is, and that the latest decision from EA is nothing to joke about.

The legislation, formally titled the law “aimed at protecting children from information promoting the denial of traditional family values,” bans the “promotion of nontraditional sexual relations to minors”—a reference universally understood to mean a ban on providing children access to information about LGBT people’s lives. The ban includes, but is not limited to, information provided via the press, television, radio, and the internet.

Human Rights Watch

It was no surprise for me that there would be some sort of reaction and modification from EA Russia in regards of the Game Pack cover. After all – two consenting female characters getting married is the root of all evil in this world and must be punished.

After the pack’s announcement two days ago I noticed something – The Sims Russia stopped posting as everyone else around the world celebrated love. There was something off.

First of all, TheSims.com in Russia didn’t even post about the pack’s existence at all – they only focused on the upcoming Kits.

Screenshot 2022 02 10 at 14.22.34

The Sims Russia’s main social platform on VK also completely ignored the announcement of the pack:

Screenshot 2022 02 10 at 14.25.22

I reached out to EA two days ago to find out what’s going on with the pack and what are their plans to rollout the game in Russia – if they had any plans at all that is.

Early this morning they said the following:

Imagining the stories our players will tell with our packs is at the heart of everything we create. For “My Wedding Stories,” we were excited to introduce you to Dom and Cam. Their love story reflects the lived experiences of so many members of our community and team. As we moved through our development and brand storytelling process, we became aware that the way we wanted to tell Cam and Dom’s story would not be something we could freely share around the world.

The ability to tell stories – any story – is at the core of what we do at The Sims. Holding back Cam and Dom’s story meant compromising the values we live by.

We are committed to the freedom to be who you are, to love who you love and tell the stories you want to tell.

We are steadfast in upholding that commitment by shining a light on and celebrating stories like Dom and Cam’s, so we have made the decision to forgo the release of “My Wedding Stories” where our storytelling would be subject to changes because of federal laws.

Regrettably, this means that members of The Sims community in Russia will not be able to purchase this game pack.

This decision is a double edged sword.

On one hand, The Sims Russian community could’ve had an official release of the Game Pack with a different cover art. A cover art that features legal, natural, family-valued love in the eyes of traditional Russia. All while censoring LGBTQ+ representation to the people that need it the most in Russia where, in some parts, just being LGBTQ+ can get you in a lot of trouble.

On the other hand the game now won’t be sold in Russia at all, resorting many players to illegaly download a Game Pack in a country where it’s illegal to be who you are. Ain’t that the irony…

I stand with the Sims community in Russia and I hope EA finds another way of delivering this pack to their player base.

ARTICLE UPDATE: It seems the Main Menu section of The Sims 4 Game in Russia just contradicted itself completely. “Say Yes to Love” said The Sims 4 in Russia…

This story is still being developed and will continue throughout the rest of the coming days through several articles. As an LGBTQ+ person living in the Balkan area of Europe where we still don’t have basic rights to be our queer selves and marry who we want I’m still processing this information. Sure, this is just a video game and a decision like this doesn’t mean a lot to you – but as someone who’s been playing The Sims in means of escapism through the harsh realities of the real world where our rights are stripped I’m everything but surprised. This is an everyday thing for us.

I’m still trying to gather every piece of information correctly here so you might see some updates to the article here and there. However, just a friendly reminder to all the homophobes and transphobes who might be reading this article:

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal

Here’s everything we spotted in the Game Pack’s reveal!

It’s official! We are FINALLY getting some actual gameplay very soon! The reveal trailer for the My Wedding Stories game pack just dropped today and it is stuffed with pretty much everything every family and generational player has ever dreamed of. At least when it comes to tying the knot with that special someone. Gone are the days of lackluster wedding ceremonies where all your guests dance in the aisle during your vows and the caterer makes 27 bowls of mac n cheese instead of a wedding cake.

Here’s everything we spotted in the reveal trailer!

New Nails

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
Nails were added in a free base game update a little while ago and players who owned the Spa Day DLC had access to a wider variety of nails for their Sims. Until the recent Carnaval Streetwear Kit, nail additions remained exclusive to Spa Day but it looks like My Wedding Stories will be coming with at least one new set of nails for our Sims to rock.

Cake Decorating

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
We were super excited to see this! Being able to decorate baked goods was previously exclusive to the Get To Work DLC but it makes so much sense to bring it into a wedding pack. After all, the cake is a huge focal point of many wedding receptions and wedding cakes can sometimes cost almost as much as a wedding dress! Not to mention these new wedding cakes look much more impressive than those tiny single tier cakes in the standard edition of the base game. The digital deluxe adds triple tier cakes which are nicer but still nowhere on the same level as these impressive wedding cake displays, wow!

Tea Sets

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
A traditional tea set is something I have dearly wanted in the game for many years now and from the game pack blog and assets, it sounds like these tea sets are not just decorative and will be an integrated part of wedding planning and wedding ceremonies!

Photographers?

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
We might be going out on a limb here but in the trailer, we see proposal pictures on the wall which could not have been taken without a third Sim present behind the camera. Maybe The Sims Team did what most of us do and just added a random Sim to the household to snap a photo. But maybe they’re hinting that you can hire wedding and proposal photographers to help you capture those special moments? Hmmm…

Asking to be Sim of Honour

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
In the trailer, we see the bride-to-be asking her best friend to be involved in the planning process for her wedding. Her friend graciously accepts but then we see that she is secretly sad because she’s actually in love with the bride-to-be! We know from the game pack description that not all of this is movie magic; our Sims will be able to assign the role of Sim of Honour to their friends or family and that Sim will get to be involved in the planning process. However, we do wonder if these sorts of dramatic situations might be integrated into the gameplay as well.

New World

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
The reveal trailer shows off some beautiful views of a brand new world which looks to be inspired by coastal Italy! What a romantic place to plan a wedding or go on a honeymoon! When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore!

Window Shopping

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
The Cottage Living DLC had some functionality on a few of the shell buildings in Henford-on-Bagley which allowed our Sims to window shop and change their clothes from a boutique in Finchwick. It looks like the new world will also have building shells Sims can browse and window shop at! It’s a nice little touch to make buildings that would otherwise be set dressing a functional object for Sims to interact with.

Cake and Flower Vendors

We can see the rather unhappy bride and groom-to-be arguing over cake and flower samples in front of vendor stalls selling these items. This is a much anticipated part of the wedding planning process that our Sims will now be able to experience! We wonder if our Sims will also have their own reactions to each flower and cake sample. It could make for some interesting tension if your engaged couple disagrees on every cake and floral arrangement.

Hot Air Balloons

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
We can see a hot air balloon in the background of some shots that looks like more than just low-poly sky dressing like the helicopters and birds and such that normally inhabit the skies of various worlds. We’re hopeful that these balloons might actually be functional and that our Sims can ride in them to take in breathtaking views. It would certainly be romantic which is the theme of this whole pack.

New Wedding Arches

We can see at least three new wedding arches in the reveal trailer (possibly four or even five if the circular structures behind the Sims in two of the above screenshots are actually wedding arches). A modern one with candles and a more traditional floral one. We’ve gotten a few new wedding arches in a couple packs but having even more variety just helps us to customize our Sims’ special day that much more.

Getting Dumped at the Altar?

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
In the reveal, the bride ditches her fiancé at the altar for her best friend. This could just be movie magic but we think it would be really cool if some Sims may autonomously back out of the wedding at the last minute based on a number of factors, like their relationship/sentiments with the person they’re marrying or their traits. There was a risk of Sims dumping your Sim at the altar in The Sims 2 if their relationship was not very high and Romance Sims were much more likely to back out of saying “I do!” Adding this back into The Sims 4 would certainly add an element of drama, surprise, and unpredictability to an otherwise very predictable game. We can call off the wedding ourselves by clicking on the arch during the ceremony but having to always do it ourselves takes all the fun out of it.

Wedding Veils

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
After years and years of begging for wedding veils, we finally see exactly… one (1) wedding veil in the reveal. Which is probably attached to the hair like so many other non-hat head accessories. We hope we’re wrong. We hope to be pleasantly surprised with more wedding veils as more info on this pack comes to light and we hope the veils are hats that can be added to any hair. But we aren’t holding our breath on that one.

New Piano

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
Unless you count the electronic keyboard that came with the City Living DLC six years ago, we’ve been stuck with the same two base game pianos since the game’s launch. One of them is locked behind the Entertainer career so it was delightfully refreshing to see a new piano in an ornate style that hopefully isn’t locked like the base game ornate piano.

Flower Girls and Ring Bearers

We love that the younger members of our Sims’ families can play an important role in wedding ceremonies now! Flower girls and ring bearers are an important part of many wedding ceremonies and we’re excited to see that The Sims Team didn’t forget to include children in this important milestone in Sims’ lives.

Wedding Officiator

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
Dating all the way back to The Sims 1, Sims have never had someone present to officiate their wedding ceremony. They’ve always just said their vows under an arch, exchanged rings and that was that. In fact, the only Sims game to ever have a wedding officiant present at wedding ceremonies was The Sims Medieval! It looks like they’ll be a part of The Sims 4 now, too! An exciting first for the series’ main titles!

Respectful Wedding Guests!

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
It’s kind of pathetic that this is something to get this excited over. This seems like a very basic feature that should have been in the base game from the very beginning seven years ago but better late than never? Wedding guests will FINALLY sit down and stay seated throughout the duration of the entire wedding ceremony! They’ll even react to the ceremony and celebrate when your Sims are pronounced married!

Walking Down the Aisle

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
It looks like there’s no hard feelings between the main Sim and her ex-fiancé because he is later seen walking her down the aisle at her wedding to her best friend! We also see the other bride walking down the aisle by herself and then we see the two brides walking back down the aisle together after getting married. This shows us that our Sims can choose to walk down the aisle with anyone they choose or no one at all if they prefer. It also shows us that these new and improved wedding ceremonies are real, proper ceremonies with officiants, Sims of Honour, other wedding party Sims, and the traditional walk down the aisle together after tying the knot.

New Buffet Table

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
The Luxury Party Stuff DLC came with two different styles of buffet table and a fountain that could be placed on them. It looks like an additional one will be coming to My Wedding Stories, complete with a fountain as well!

Wedding Tents and Dance Floors

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
Many outdoor weddings have wedding tents set up to protect the guests and decorations in case of rain and we can see some pretty elaborate tent setups at the wedding reception in the reveal. We just hope that these tents will actually provide shelter from rain, unlike the numerous other decorative outdoor coverings we have in the game. We also see a dance floor at the wedding reception! Dance floors were originally introduced in the Get Together DLC and until now, they hadn’t been seen again in any DLC pack.

New Dances

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
Speaking of dancing, you previously needed the Get Together DLC to open up new dance moves for your Sims, including synchronized dancing in a group. It looks like some new types of dances will be coming to My Wedding Stories as well! Slow dancing is finally coming back and adults can now dance with children by holding their hands! How cute! We can also see the newly married brides doing a dip-style dance move!

Better Cake Cutting Ceremony

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
Sims could always cut the cake at a wedding and feed it to their new spouse but it was glitchy and rather anti-climactic. Instead of both newlyweds gathering at the cake to feed a piece to each other, one Sim would cut the cake and walk across the lot to wherever the other Sim was to feed them a bite. And of course, none of the guests ever cared enough to watch or clap. We’re happy to see that this important wedding ceremony ritual has gotten improvements.

Throwing Bouquets

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
Another important wedding ceremony ritual makes its debut in The Sims Series! We see the brides tossing their bouquets behind them for two lucky wedding guests to catch. Catching the bouquet at a wedding is supposed to predict that you will be the next person to get married! In the reveal, the two Sims who catch the bouquets do indeed end up falling in love and getting married!

Honeymoons?

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
After the wedding, the newlyweds are seen enjoying a romantic honeymoon in the new world together. We’re very hopeful that honeymoons will be their own type of vacation with special features and gameplay associated with them. With all the amazing worlds The Sims 4 has, our newlyweds wouldn’t have any shortage of incredible honeymoon locations to choose from!

Different Cultural Ceremonies

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
Our brides enjoyed a traditionally Western-style wedding ceremony and reception but in snapshots of the wedding that follows, we can see representation of other cultures from around the world! This is no surprise given The Sims 4’s consistent efforts to add more diversity and representation in the game but it’s still nice to see that Western-style wedding ceremonies are not the only option available for our Sims. Weddings should be as diverse as our Sims are.

Vow Renewals

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
Many years later as elderly Sims, our married couple returns to the spot where they first said “I do” to renew their vows. Vow renewals have always been a part of the game. Sims who were already married could click on a wedding arch at any time and select Renew Vows but it seems like the reveal trailer is hinting that this moment will become even more special for our Sims with the addition of this game pack.

New Wedding Rings

Everything We Noticed in The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Reveal
We won’t lie; we were anxiously scanning every Sim’s ring finger in the reveal looking for new wedding rings and we were growing more and more disappointed… until we spotted this! Yes, that is indeed a new wedding ring! We hope there are even more wedding ring styles we haven’t seen, yet.

The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories: New Tartosa Screens

Tartosa is a brand new coastal world coming with The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories Game Pack!

The Sims Team couldn’t wait to share the excitement of this new world. SimGurus have already started updating their header photos featuring new screenshots of the world. Let’s go through each one!

The first screenshot shows a beautiful sunset setting down in Tartosa from the point of view of, what appears to be, a balcony. In the background you can also spot the lighthouse!

The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories: New Tartosa Screens

Now this one is really interesting! You can see the Tartosa center square (which, I have to be honest, reminds me a lot of the world from Disney’s Luca). Around the town square are the new interactable rabbit holes where you can window shop and order food and flowers from the stalls.

There are also many picturesque pathways around the new residental lots, as well as a proper new beach. Don’t worry – SimGurus have confirmed that beaches in Tartosa are swimmable! That also means that if you have Island Living you’ll be able to drive around in boats, jet skis and more.

Another Tartosa preview screen showcases a gorgeous new waterfall with a wooden pathway built across it. Another gorgeous setting for your Sims to get proposed to!

There is another screenshot of what appears to be a whole different Neighborhood of Tartosa. This area of Tartosa features coastal walkpaths, new swimmable areas, waterfalls and more.

How are your Sims going to sit down at the wedding? We finally have an answer!

The developers working on The Sims 4 (also known as SimGurus) have started posting new screenshots and updating their avatars. Of course – featuring new footage and information from the upcoming Game Pack, My Wedding Stories!

Before we continue with new screenshots we finally have an answer to a long-awaited question – will Sims sit down at the weddings?

Ever since the release of The Sims 4 players had difficulty telling their Sims to sit down before the ceremony begins. SimGuruFrost has revealed a new mechanic coming to the game that’s simple, yet effective.

A new interaction “Please Take your Seats” will order all of the guests to sit down, assuming that you’re ready to begin with the wedding ceremony.
