SimGuruKimmi published a concept art piece of the new Day Of The Dead content update for The Sims 4, designed by Sunny Jiang!
OPINION: The Sims 4 City Living Goes Against The Sims’ Philosophy
City Living is the most glaringly problematic pack thus far in The Sims 4
If you were to ask any simmer why they love The Sims, they would most likely tell you because of the freedom it allows them to do whatever they want. Whether it’s creating sims, building lots, or living out their sim’s lives. It’s the freedom, the creative abilities, the customization. This has always been the philosophy of the Sims series and why players have always come back, series after series, game after game.
That is, until Sims 4 City Living came along. The initial announcement showed off impressive apartments, cultural events, many returning activities from past games in the series, it seems like a really promising expansion in terms of deep gameplay, something Sims 4 has sorely been missing since its release two years ago. Then came the finer details of the pack through tweets and forum posts by the Gurus. One tweet the fans hard. This tweet right here:

As if that wasn’t a big enough shock to the playerbase. Enough of a kick to the shins to builders. Enough of a warning sign for players to head for the hills. We were then double whammied with this follow up tweet:
So not only are players barred from building their own apartments, but they’re also barred from adding apartments to any of the other worlds in the game, past or future. I’ve played Sims since the very beginning. I own every game released. Never have I seen something so against the philosophy of the Sims than this. All throughout the life of the Sims series we’ve always been able to create every single type of lot introduced. Even when shells were introduced in Sims 3 we were still able to create our own innards of them. We could make our own apartments in Sims 3 Late Night. We could build our own performance venues in Sims 3 Showtime. We could build our own interactive classrooms in Sims 3 University Life.
No matter what they introduced, they always found a way to do it in such a way that they stuck to their vision, but also allowed us to create our vision as well. City Living goes completely against this. The Sims Team stuck to their vision all right, but they removed any and all chances that we could stick to ours as well. They tried to merely write it off as a worthwhile decision because they’re so unique and fun and they “look better this way.” I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather be able to build my own apartments and put them in whatever world I want rather than have “pretty shells.”
The fact of the matter is, no matter how fun this new apartment system may be, it will get boring quickly. It’ll get repetitive. It’ll get stale. No matter how fun they are, the apartments in City Living are minimal. We’re only going to get a handful because each world in Sims 4 never has many lots available. And what we get is it for the entirety of Sims 4. We can’t make them ourselves. We can’t download player made ones from the gallery. None will ever come in future packs as it’s an expansion-exclusive feature. So while they may be fun and exciting when the game first comes out, just know that they’re all we’re going to get, forever. So once you get bored of the available apartments, that’s it. Forever.
After watching the latest livestream for City Living, I’m even more confused as to why we can’t build our own apartments, or what they even mean by that phrase now. Penthouses are literally regular lots of any type (residential, club, park, etc.) on top of a giant world object no different than if they were placed on any other world lot. We can build anything on them, and we can download lots from the gallery to place on them. So clearly these don’t function as apartments, they’re just houses really high in the world.
The brownstone they showed off looked like it functioned exactly like the apartments in Sims 2. By that, I mean it had legitimate apartments and families you could visit, albeit after going through a loading screen instead of random sims popping out after knocking on the door like Sims 3. If an expansion from 2008, made for a base game made in 2004, could give us legit apartments that we could build ourselves, how is it that an expansion in 2016 for a base game made in 2014 can’t? It’s nonsense. I’d really like to see the inner workings of these lots so I can understand why exactly we can’t build our own because they look exactly like normal lots in Sims 4 and normal apartment lots in Sims 2, that we could build. I have so many questions after that livestream.
This is an extremely problematic sign for things to come. The team clearly has no regard for the philosophy of the Sims series. They have no regard for the freedom of the player. They’re going to continue making the game however they want, no matter how much it limits the player. We saw warning signs of this in Get Together when we couldn’t change the lot type of the Von Haunte Estate, then again in Dine Out when our sims were only allowed to hire employees, they couldn’t cook and wait tables themselves. But the apartment system in City Living is the most glaring example of this lack of freedom thus far in Sims 4, and it doesn’t bode well for the future of the game. At all.
So no matter how fun the apartments may be, it wasn’t worth it.

The Sims 4: How to get Sugar Skulls for the Day of the Dead Event!
In the new update published Tuesday 27th September, Sugar Skulls have been added as a collectable to The Sims 4! There are 10 to collect and this is how you get them.
First, you’ll need a grave. This can be any sims. (Note: you can only do this during the night) Then you can click on the grave and select the option ‘Leave Sugar Skull Offering’.

This might take a few tries (And it has a cool down) however when it succeeds the grave will glow and your sim will cheer. After that you’ll get a notification announcing ‘the ancestors have heard your call and sent a Day of the Dead celebrator to roam the neighborhood’

It might take a couple of minutes to find them, but somewhere in your current neighbourhood will be a sim wearing Day of the Dead face paint and clothes. Also, if you hover your mouse over the sim, they have a title saying ‘Day of the Dead celebrator’.
It doesn’t seem like this job is given to one sim, it might be any pre-made sim within the world. (For example, here Max is given the job. But in your neighbourhood it might be someone else)
One you have found the celebrator, simply click on them and ‘Ask for Sugar Skull’.
After a small conversation, your sim will automatically get a skull in their inventory.

The command does have a cool down so make sure to come back later for more skulls! (This applies even if you have more than 1 member in your household, only 1 sim may ask for a skull then you have to wait for the cool down)!

Patch Notes
Update: 09/27/2016 – PC Version 1.23.24.1010 / Mac Version 1.23.24.1210
Afternoon, Morning, and Evening Simmers!
…in that exact order (but only if you are traveling West)We have just a quick content add for you, so without ado of a furthering type…
…the New Stuff
Some new stuff for your Sims to celebrate the Day of the Dead!
- …which technically isn’t until the end of October.
- … but they’re Sims. So, technically any day can be the end of October.
- I’m reminded of the famous quote, “Today will not be known as Taco Tuesday. It will be known as Freedom Friday, but still on a Tuesday!”
So you were saying, what’s new?
- A new recipe for Pan de Muerto is available under the Cook… interaction.
- Several new objects are available for your Sims to decorate their homes. Search for the term “Day of the Dead” in Buy Mode to find…
- Two new wall hangings, a table, some candles, and a sculpture.
- There are also several new outfits for your Sims in Create a Sim!
- Male and Female Sims have a new full body outfit, plus face makeup.
- Female Sims have a new hair, and Male Sims have a new hat.
- Children also have a new full body outfit and face makeup.
And since we are on the subject of October… turns out Oct 1st marks the end of a quarter… so, that’s a thing.
Also, the end of a quarter has ridges.
Did you know that if you are only looking at one side of a ridge, you can’t see the other side? But if you wait, and let yourself move forward… just a short bit, you might find yourself on the other side of the ridge, able to see more.
Is it better on the other side? It might be, but I suppose in the end it all depends on the perception of which side of the quarter you are looking from, and prefer.
And with that little bit of wisdom, I wish you a happy Release Tuesday!

The Sims Blog: How San Myshuno was built in The Sims 4 City Living
Via TheSims.com!
Sul Sul! We’re delighted you decided to join us today for our quick, informal tour of San Myshuno, the new World in The Sims 4 City Living*Expansion Pack. Watch your step and let’s get going!
San Myshuno was inspired first and foremost by diversity. We knew we wanted a diverse, vibrant, modern city where you might see people of Indian, Arab, Japanese, African, and other ethnicities. We wanted to create a colorful melting pot inspired by different cultural canvasses. We initially drew inspiration from Asian cities like Shanghai and Tokyo, but they were too intense with the lights, and felt a bit too focused on single cultural groups. Then, we looked to coastal cities like Vancouver, San Francisco, New York, and Sydney, as places known to host hugely distinct cultures in unique neighborhoods.
San Myshuno is divided into four neighborhoods inspired by different cultures and offer different activities, apartments, and festivals for your Sims. Let’s visit each quickly, shall we?
The Spice Market – A comfortable, old neighborhood marked by its distinct brownstone apartments and colorful mosaics. We were inspired by Indian colors and visual elements for this neighborhood. The Spice Market is the home of the Spice Festival, which is the perfect place to sample foods from different cultures (while also obliterating your Sim’s taste buds with spice!). There are some very affordable starter apartments here, and your Sims will certainly enjoy themselves in a pickup game of basketball, or spraying some graffiti with friends.
The Arts Quarter – Practically a sculpture itself, and is one of our more beautiful neighborhoods. Those who have been to San Francisco might recognize elements of the Yerba Buena Center across the street from the SF Museum of Modern Art. The art museum here in San Myshuno is really top notch, and aspiring musicians will seek their next tip here near the food stands. The Lantern Festival will pop up in the Arts Quarter from time to time, which is great, as it’s the perfect place for your Sims to view the fireworks!
The Fashion District – We’re definitely moving up the economic ladder here, but it offers truly spectacular views and neighborhood entertainments! Be ready to pay a stiffer price in rent if your Sims move in here. The Fashion District and Uptown are both inspired by the high-tech high rises of cities like Tokyo and Shanghai. The Fashion District is the home of the lively (and sometimes unruly!) Planet Sing-Pop, where vocal hopefuls go to belt out the latest tunes with friends and significant others. When auditory atrocities aren’t pouring forth from the karaoke bar, Sims might wander onto the street itself to enjoy the peculiar sights of GeekCon or maybe even find love at the Romance Festival.
Uptown – The final district, and one which has a truly breathtaking view with some wonderful high-rise options for Sims who have the bankroll to spare. Uptown is the home of the gym & rooftop lounge, and it’s also the final destination for Sims who have risen to the top of their career and now wish to rise to the top of the skyline.
We’ve never made a world like San Myshuno. It’s jam packed with diverse and exciting people, new activities like festivals, and venues that’ll entertain Sims otherwise cramped in their small starter apartments. Your Sims will want to move to San Myshuno the second it’s open, which is this November!

Flea Markets to come with The Sims 4 City Living
UPDATE: SimGuruDaniel revealed some more info on flea markets:
@Quaay00 It’s a festival, yes.
— Daniel Hiatt (@SimGuruDaniel) September 26, 2016
@Quaay00 You can run your own sales tables.
— Daniel Hiatt (@SimGuruDaniel) September 26, 2016
It seems that The Sims Team wanted to keep a certain feature secret until they’re ready to talk about The Sims 4 City Living’s Festivals. Still, one of the retail websites managed to leak a huge feature that you’ll be able to play with.
British gaming retail website GAME has provided an extended description of Festivals:
Discover Lively, Cultural Festivals: Enrich and grow your Sims by taking them to different festivals all over the city where they can watch street performers, enter competitions, and meet different walks of life. Take your Sims to the Spice Festival where they can enter the Curry Challenge and become the Spice Master. Help your Sim light fireworks with a hot date at the Romance Festival. Earn Simoleons by selling your Sims’ crafts at the Flea Market.
It’s still unsure which crafts we’ll be able to sell and will we be able to craft entirely new objects.
Flea Markets were first shown in the early designs of The Sims 4 Get Together’s Windenburg, still, they didn’t fit in with The Sims Team’s vision of Get Together Expansion Pack.

The Sims 4 City Living: Moroccan-Inspired Paintings Concept
Emily Zeinner, one of the previous The Sims 4 Concept Artists who used to work on The Sims 4 City Living has shared the following concept art of the new Paintings with the following text:
Some of the fun Moroccan-inspired(mostly) paintings I did for City Living that have been shown so far in the Livestream/trailer. One of the difficult things was how to simify font in different languages. Hopefully nothing actually spells anything in Japanese/Arabic 🙂

The Sims 4 City Living to come with a new Death Type
The Sims 4 City Living’s latest broadcast may have shown more than it should. During the broadcast, a loading screen popped up with the following tip:
Eating poorly made Pufferfish Nigiri can cause a slight case of DEATH.
It seems that the new recipe called Pufferfish Nigiri can be really deadly for your Sims!
