Let's learn about Self Discovery and how to earn the trait you want! Or if you even can earn it...
The Sims 4 Self Discovery is a feature from Growing Together Expansion Pack. With this, young adult and older Sims can gain or change their existing Personality Traits with new ones depending on the actions they take, allowing them to have up to 6 traits! But how does it work exactly? And are there other ways for this?
Well, in this article, you can discover how the Self Discovery mechanism works, alongside the other ways Sims and gain/replace their traits. Afterwards, we'll see some cheats to not only trigger them, but to have more than 3 Self Discovery moments!
Table of Contents
How It Works
With Growing Together, young adult and older Sims get up to 29 new hidden commodities or motives for each Self Discovery category, which can be raised or lowered through gameplay. Once the commodity is raised high (or low in some cases) enough, your Sim may get suggested a new trait. It's up to player to accept or decline, but during a Sim's lifetime, only up to 3 Self Discovery moments can be accepted.

Each category contains at least one trait, which can be either from the base game or any pack. The following traits, however, cannot be earned through this system:
- Horse Lover
- Rancher
- Child of the Village
- Any trait unlocked from events (Practice Makes Perfect, Grouch etc)
As each category could contain multiple traits, the following rules will also apply:
- Sims cannot earn traits from the category they already have at least one trait from.
- For example, Dance Machine and Party Animal are both in one category. If your Sim has one of them, they cannot earn the other through Self Discovery.
- Some categories are two-sided, meaning they have the traits separated into the minimum and maximum value. If your Sim has only one trait from the other side, the trait earned from this will be suggested to replace it.
- These traits may not conflict with each other. For example, Clumsy can replace Perfectionist and vice versa, but Sims created in CAS can have both of these traits.
- If the trait conflicts with a trait from another category, this trait cannot be suggested.
- For example, Glutton and Foodie are in different categories. However, if your Sim has one of them, they are unable to earn the other through Self Discovery.
There are some exceptions, but these will be brought out in the Category section with an asterisk.
When the player declines or the game fails to suggest a trait, the respective category will be pushed back by half, making gaining the another Self Discovery moment from the same category faster to achieve (perfect it you're eyeing for another trait instead).
However, once your Sim has accepted a Self Discovery moment, they will have a 1-day cooldown period before they can have another one. After the cooldown ends, all the Self Discovery category commodities will be reset back to 0. Accepting it will also count towards the limit. Sims can have up to 3 Self Discovery moments throughout their lifetime, even if the moment ended up not adding the trait due to the Sim already having 6 traits or a bug.

In addition, Chased by Death can be suggested when your Sim answers "I'm scared" to a prophetic dream through a phone call or sometimes after asking Grim to check his Sablet of Souls. This suggestion won't be blocked by other Ambition traits and having reached the max amount of Self Discovery moments.

Metabolism
To survive, Sims must eat food, but what kind of food is up to them. Sims that enjoy enough Vegetarian-Safe foods may decide to go full-on Vegetarian. Sims that eat sweets, snacks, or just with full Hunger need may find themselves needing more food than others. Oh, and please don't try to drink some spoiled milk.

Skill
Learning a new skill is quite a journey: all begin with some mishaps, but some end up with mastery. And with this comes high quality crafts, which not only makes the skill more profitable, but also may raise expectations in your Sims, making them a Perfectionist. On the other hand, failing constantly when building up new skills may lead Sims embracing that they are Clumsy, which makes it much easier for them to laugh at their own failures.

![]() ![]() | Minimum | Maximum |

Smart
Playing chess, reading books, and doing cerebral skills not only makes your Sim look smarter, but also builds skills (usually Logic)! Yet continue to enjoy those activities and your Sim may actually be smarter not only by their skills, but also by their personality. Or they grow a newfound appreciation to books. Either of them works well!

Snob
Life can be unfair, full of problems, struggles, and bad taste. And sometimes you just have to let the steam out by complaining. In fact, complaining is a great way to build friendships with those who like it! Yet if your Sim constantly keeps complaining, then sooner or later they may begin to feel... a little bit more egotistical.

![]() | Maximum |

Social
How social can your Sim be? If they are making new friends and constantly socializing, they may become Outgoing later on. Or on the contrary, feeling lonely and failing social interactions leads to varying degrees of social awkwardness and potentially enjoying this loneliness. But remember: even the loneliest Sim may become a social butterfly if they try hard enough (and vice versa)!

![]() ![]() | Minimum | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Traits: | Loner Socially Awkward (High School Years) | Outgoing Bro Insider (Get Together) Nosy* (For Rent) |

* Nosy trait won't be replaced when Loner or Socially Awkward trait is earned. Having Nosy with any other trait will not block out Loner or Socially Awkward Self Discovery moments.

Tech
Embrace the fun side of technology! Whether programming or playing video games, these both can be done for fun and profit. Eventually, your Sim may earn the certified Geek trait too to take their hobby to the next level!

![]() | Maximum |

![]() ![]() | Minimum | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Traits: | Good Proper* (Snowy Escape) Generous (For Rent) | Evil Mean |
| Examples: | Giving gifts Donating with Charisma skill Successfully pleading to Grim Reaper | Being mean Trash talking others Sabotaging holidays |
| Cheats: | stats.set_stat commodity_SelfDiscovery_Tracker_Virtues -100 | stats.set_stat commodity_SelfDiscovery_Tracker_Virtues 100 |
* Requires Proper interactions to be done before the Self Discovery moment (Respectful Introduction for example). In that case, the other ones cannot be suggested.

Other Ways To Get More Traits
Re-Traiting Potion
Re-Traiting Potion is available through the Rewards Store for 5,000 Satisfaction Points (or in Build Mode with bb.showhiddenobjects cheat). Drinking it will bring up a panel through which you can change your Sim's traits. This is the Base Game method to change the traits without any cheats.

However, it comes at a cost of not resetting the Self Discovery moment counter. In addition, Sims will also lose any extra traits they may have. Cheat to reset the Self Discovery moment counter will be shared further in this article though to counter this drawback.
Wise Trait

Wise trait is a special personality trait from For Rent that only elders can have. However, the last time you can add a trait when aging up is when a teen becomes a young adult. No worries, Sims can earn this trait from gameplay too!
When a Sim ages up into an elder, they have a chance to experience a special Self Discovery moment to add the Wise trait, even when Growing Together expansion pack is not installed! The base chance of it happening is 10%.

The each following skills on level 5 or higher will increase the chance:
- Logic
- Medium (Paranormal)
- Programming
- Writing
- Rocket Science
- Research & Debate (Discover University)
- Robotics (Discover University)
- Wellness (Spa Day)
- Knitting (Nifty Knitting)
Having at least one of these Personality Traits also increase the chance:
- Bookworm
- Geek
- Genius
- Creative
- Adventurous (Snowy Escape)
- Overachiever (High School Years)
Further increased by having at least one of these Aspiration Reward and Bonus Traits (more about them here):
- Professorial
- Quick Learner
- Handy
- Webmaster
- A True Master (Vampires)
- Museum Patron (Jungle Adventure)
- Slinger of Spells (Realm of Magic)
- Higher Education (Discover University)
- Clear Perspective (Spa Day)
- Regained Humanity (Vampires)
- Headstrong (Growing Together)
- Lunar Link (Werewolves)
- Sacred Knitting Knowledge (Nifty Knitting)
- Worldly Knowledge (Snowy Escape)
- Collector
- I am the Master (Vampires)
- Role Model (Parenthood)
Last but not least, having at least one of those Reward Traits will also contribute towards higher chance:
- Entrepreneurial
- Creative Visionary
- Brave
- Super Mentor
- Great Storyteller (Outdoor Retreat)
- The Knowledge (High School Years)
- Sickness Resistance (Get to Work)
- Scientist's Expert Repair ability (Get to Work)
- Memorable
However, having one of the conflicting traits will eliminate this Self Discovery moment. These traits are:
- Cringe
- Snob
- Hot-Headed
- Erratic
And finally, having experienced all 3 Self Discovery moments will also block it out. With Growing Together, it will count as one of three Self Discovery moments Sims can have. If The Sims 4 Self Discovery is disabled through Pack Options, the Wise trait will also never be suggested.
Grief Trait Replacements
With Life & Death Expansion Pack, Grief feature is introduced. Losing someone can hit your Sim very hard, be it by having them die or breaking up with them or having them taken away. More info about dealing with and overcoming grief can be found in this guide. Grief can end up changing your Sim forever, depending on how they dealt with it.

Once Sim's grief period ends, the game can suggest replacing one of their traits. If your Sim coped well, a Positive Replacement can be suggested. However, coping really terribly may have the game suggest a Negative Replacement instead. You will have an option to turn them down if you want. However, accepting them won't count towards the 3 Self Discovery limit. Having reached the limit before won't block out those replacements either.
Here are all the traits that can be replaced through Grief and with what traits these can be replaced with.

Retaining Traits From the Past Life
Upon fully completing your Sim's Soul Journey (by reaching The Big Picture stage, which requires your Sim to be a ghost), they earn the Burning Soul trait. After rebirth, teen and older Sim have a new self-interaction called 'Recall Past Life', allowing them to add one of the Personality traits from their past life to the current one.
Not only that, but Sims who have recalled a trait from their past life can have one more Personality Trait, having up to 3 as a teen and up to 7 as an older Sim (1 recalled, 3 from Self-Discovery). Do note that if the teen has 3 traits, you won't be able to choose a new trait once they age up to young adult. For 7 traits, have your Sim recall their past life as a young adult (or add the rest of the traits with cheats afterwards). More on rebirth here.

Encouraging to be Shady
With Businesses & Hobbies, Sims can have the Shady trait. These Sims prefer to do dubious activities and be a schemer. Other Sims may see these as daunting, but they just need a little push.
Shady Sims have a new Deep Thoughts Friendly social interaction called 'Ask to Embrace the Shade'. This requires the relationship to be high enough and the target mustn't have either Idealist or Shady trait. When successful, the target will gain the Shady trait.

Cheats
Immediately Trigger a Self Discovery Moment
Want to have a Self Discovery immediately? No worries, there are cheats for it. The cheat code we need is stats.set_stat, which requires testingcheats on to be enabled first. The cheat should look like this:
stats.set_stat commodity_SelfDiscovery_Tracker_[Category Name] 100stats.set_stat commodity_SelfDiscovery_Tracker_[Category Name] -100
You need to replace [Category Name] part with the name of the desired category. Fortunately, the Categories section will bring out the categories as they are in the game code, so simply use one of those. In addition, these cheats have been brought out in the same section.
Do remember that Self Discovery needs to be enabled in Pack Options. Even if enabled, there is still a chance that the moment doesn't happen and the commodity is set to 50 or -50 respectively. In that case, just enter the cheat again. In addition, check out the rules of Self Discovery moments here.
Reset Self Discovery Counter
Sims can only have 3 Self Discovery moments within their lifetime. Any moment you accept will count towards it, even if they don't end up adding a new trait (due to having the trait limit reached for example). However, fortunately, cheats will come in handy! These cheats need testingcheats on to be enabled first.
First you need to reset the counter itself. For this, you can use this cheat:stats.set_stat statistic_SelfDiscovery_Max 0
Secondly, if your Sim reaches max amount of Self Discovery moments, a hidden trait will be added to prevent further moments. To remove it, use this cheat:traits.remove_trait trait_Hidden_SelfDiscoveryMax
And with these cheats, your Sim will be able to have Self Discovery moments again!
End Grief (Immediately) & Replace a Trait
Whenever you wish to trigger a grief trait replacement moment for storytelling purposes, these will be the cheats you'll need to use.
First, your Sim needs to be in grief. If your Sim isn't in grief, you can use cheats to add a grief trait. More traits that can be equipped can be found in the Reward Traits Guide. The cheats to add grief will be:traits.equip_trait trait_Grief_Anger
traits.equip_trait trait_Grief_Depression
traits.equip_trait trait_Grief_Denial
traits.equip_trait trait_Grief_HoldTogether
First you need to set the coping high or low enough. Having it on at least 50 will result in a Positive Replacement, while having on -75 or below will result in a Negative Replacement. Do remember that at 99 your Sim gains a positive moodlet and at -99 Sims holding it together or in denial could go into blues or anger grief. The cheats brought out will try to avoid these extra consequences.
For a Positive Replacement, use this:stats.set_stat commodity_Grief_Coping 90
For a Negative Replacement, use this:stats.set_stat commodity_Grief_Coping -90
The replacement moment occurs once the grief ends. To end it immediately, you can use this cheat:stats.set_stat commodity_Grief_Timer 0
Do note that the Personality Change will not be guaranteed, even if your Sim has replaceable traits available.
Justice for The Excluded Traits
Unfortunately, not all the traits can be earned through the Self Discovery system or other systems (except for Recalling Past Life). While all the event traits are excluded, there are some Expansion Pack traits that are excluded.
The only way to gain these is through cheats. Simply enter traits.equip_trait [codename] to the cheat console. The list of excluded Personality Traits are as follows:
| Trait | Codename | Pack/Event |
|---|---|---|
Horse Lover | trait_HorseLover | Horse Ranch |

Conclusion
The Sims 4 Self Discovery system is the main method for your Sim to earn additional traits (or replace them). There are up to 29 categories that track your Sim's actions and suggest a trait based on that (or its replacement) once your Sim has performed enough of them. Besides cheats, there are some other ways to gain or replace traits, such as the Grief system from Life & Death. However, no matter what, Sims normally cannot have more than 6 Personality Traits.
