The Sims 4’s Latest Update adds “In-Game Surveys”

0

It seems that The Sims Team wants to be more involved with community feedback and input.

With the latest update for The Sims 4 on PC/Mac, there’s been a new addition to the Game Options segment in the “Other” category that lets you enable/disable In-Game Surveys.

The Sims 4’s Latest Update adds “In-Game Surveys”

Although it seems that The Sims Team still hasn’t pushed these surveys out as nothing came across while I was playing the game, I did however manage to uncover this new image file within the User Interface package:

The Sims 4’s Latest Update adds “In-Game Surveys”

Previously The Sims Team has done surveys in numerous ways, with the most frequent way being sending out a poll link to random customers that have The Sims 4 in their Origin library.

Could it mean that players will be able to vote and suggest upcoming pack themes and content? Time will tell!

SimGuruGraham has shared a little question and answer session with the community as part of The Sims 4’s birthday celebrations!

via EA.com

Happy 5th anniversary, The Sims™ 4 players! We’ve been through so much as a community and, really, we want to thank you for your continued support. You’re an inspiration to everyone who works on The Sims, and we feel lucky to have such a passionate worldwide community. It’s because of this that we’re so excited to share a commemorative update featuring patio furniture, configurable stairs, and clothing and objects inspired by Muslim culture. To get some insider info on the development of this update, we spoke to SimGuruGraham, a producer on the team. Check out the interview below and be sure to patch your game ASAP to enjoy some fresh content.

Hi, Graham! Tell us a little about what you do on The Sims?

In my ten years with Maxis, I’ve worked exclusively on The Sims 3 and The Sims 4 as a producer. I greatly enjoy production, as it involves many shifting responsibilities at different points during development, and I get to see each project all the way through, from the early concepts to the moment they arrive in players’ hands. An aspect of production that I find particularly rewarding is being an advocate for our community of players, representing their interests, and pushing the team to consider how our ideas and creations will be viewed through their perspective.

The fifth anniversary update looks awesome! What can players expect from this patch?

I wholeheartedly agree! You’ll find a bunch of new things in this update; there’s a bit of something for everyone. We’re excited to introduce new clothing and objects inspired by Muslim culture to enable even more Simmers around the world to explore their own self-expression. This includes a clothing line with traditional and more modern looks for adults, plus new outfits for children. For the fifth anniversary itself, we envisioned inviting friends and family over for an end-of-summer get together. You’ll find sets of colorful, casual, summer wear for your Sims, and a full suite of patio furniture to set the scene for a celebration. Finally, configurable stairs are landing in The Sims 4! The community has long expressed a desire for more versatility when building with stairs, and this newly-introduced functionality will allow players to push, pull, and shape stairs at their whim – just like they’ve come to expect from other build tools within the game. L-Shaped, U-Shaped, Z-Shaped stairs — they’re all possible, and more!

There are lots of clothing, objects, and home items in this update. From where did you draw inspiration?

When we discussed adding a set of clothing and objects to celebrate The Sims 4’s fifth anniversary, we wanted to ensure the things we created would contain fun references to The Sims, but would still be versatile additions that could be incorporated into any wardrobe or home. We loved the idea of an outdoor celebration between groups of friends, and some things that were added to the game this year – such as lounge chairs and stilted foundations – led us to rally around the idea of a fresh patio set. The furniture itself incorporates a variety of looks, from solid colors to fun patterns – including series staples like plumbobs, grilled cheese, and flamingos.

What was the biggest challenge for you and the team? What about the biggest victory?

Incorporating clothing and architectural elements inspired by Muslim culture was an opportunity for some of us on the team to learn from others and provide more ways for our players to tell stories in game that are relevant to their own experiences. One great benefit of working at EA is that as a global company, we have colleagues we can chat with and discuss how best to represent styles, patterns, and colors from their culture in authentic ways. We also reached outside of EA to consult with various people who shared insights from their own life experiences, including a fashion designer who specializes in this area, who helped refine our selections. I’d say the biggest victory is knowing that this will give more of our players the ability to represent themselves, which has been fantastic to see over the course of The Sims 4 – such as with the Lunar New Year content earlier this spring, and the Caribbean content last fall.

How will this update change the way you play The Sims 4?

For me personally, it’s all about the configurable stairs. You can now take any set of stairs in the game and turn it 90 or 180 degrees. The tools for adjusting this are really intuitive, as well. You just grab the middle of the stairs and bend, and a landing will be created. You can then drag that landing up and down the stairs to adjust its height. You can even turn a single set of stairs a second, third, fourth . . . really, there’s no limit to the number of times they can be bent. Whether you create a surreal M.C. Escher-esque vision of stairs turning every which way, or just incorporate a simple set of space-efficient L-shaped stairs into a Sim’s home, this is another great tool that will unleash builders’ creativity.

We hope you’re inspired by The Sims 4’s fifth anniversary and Graham’s behind-the-scenes insight!

Spells

The patch added a new XML file (named ui.spellbook_tuning) with information about spells and potions. We already know that there will be four types of magic (Practical, Mischief, Tamed and Alchemy) but the patch reveals a lot more information about each.

  • Description of the spellbook itself: “A Spellcaster is nothing without their trusty Spell Book. Every incantation, ritual, and elixir that a Spellcaster has learned is recorded here. A Spellcaster can learn new spells and potion recipes from reading Magical Tomes, speaking to Sages, or by Practicing Magic.”
  • Description of Practical Magic: “A Practical Spellcaster studies all things helpful and useful. Life is much easier with a bit of magic!”
  • Description of Mischief Magic: “A Mischief Spellcaster loves nothing more than tormenting others with magical pranks. Why take everything so seriously?”
  • Description of Untamed Magic: “An Untamed Spellcaster dedicates themselves to only the most powerful and uncontrollable spells. Magic is a force to be controlled!”
  • Description of Alchemy Magic: “A student of the alchemical arts studies potions, elixirs, and tonics of all kinds. Who knows what power can be brewed up by a skilled Spellcaster?”
  • There are exactly 9 Practical spells, 7 Mischief Spells, 8 Untamed Spells and 15 Potions, assuming the code is as simple as it looks. Keep in mind that the code is specifically for the spellbook, so it doesn’t rule out there being spells you can practice some other way.

The available potions are as follows (note: their descriptions don’t seem to be included with the patch):

  • BFF Potion
  • Death Proof Potion
  • Empty Mind Potion
  • Feel Good Potion
  • Immortality Potion
  • Glowy Potion
  • Hate Potion
  • Life Extension Potion
  • Love Potion
  • Luck Potion
  • Nullify Potion
  • Phermone Potion
  • Prank Potion
  • Remove Curse Potion
  • Skill Potion

The file only contains some basic UI information. It doesn’t contain data on how the potions actually work, or if there are any kind of “modifiers” for them (like making a Skill Potion boost a specific skill).

Favorites

The patch added a XML file (named sims.favorites.favorites_tuning) with “Favorites” data. Right now, Sims only have Favorites related to magic, but the system could be reused in future packs, or even base game content in the future.

The file mostly consists of references to resources that require Realm of Magic and weren’t included in the patch, so it’s hard to tell exactly what the “Favorites” are, but some seem to be related to elements like fire and water. A Sim’s Favorites will override certain visual effects when riding or landing a broom. They probably do other things as well, but the majority of the code is probably in the pack itself.

Loading Screen Tips

  • Familiars need to be bound to their owners in order to be summoned.
  • Sages will only teach the strongest spells to Spellcasters of the Virtuoso rank.
  • Legends say the Glimmerbrook waterfall holds secrets to a magical realm.
  • Casters Alley in The Magic Realm is your one stop shop for all things magic.
  • The three Sages in The Magic Realm have the power to teach anyone the magical arts.

NEW CONTENT

Configurable Stairs

There’s magic in the air, and the candle summoning circles you’ve been sending us via Twitter in an effort to will new types of stairs into existence has worked! Configurable stairs have been added to the game, giving you the ability to create stairs that are L-shaped, U-shaped, and more! Excited to try them out? Simply place any set of stairs down in build mode, and you’ll notice a new widget that appears… it’s a box with two arrows attached to it. Grab onto that with your cursor and drag, and suddenly your stairs will be bent 90º! Keep dragging, and the stairs will bend 180º. Once you’ve bent your stairs, you’ll see another two widgets appear. A diagonal arrow above the newly-added landing will let you adjust the height of the landing within the staircase. A curved arrow at the base of the stairs will allow you to continue to rotate the direction of the stairs beneath the landing. For times when a single landing just isn’t enough, you can keep adding additional bends to your stairs–as long as they’re tall enough to have room for another one. I think that just about covers the basics; so get in there and try it out, experiment, and create some amazing new builds!

5th Anniversary

It’s already been five years since The Sims 4 released; whew–time flies when you’re simming! In celebration of this milestone, we’ve added a set of end-of-summer content so that your Sims can join in the festivities. Invite some friends and family over, fire up the grill, and enjoy a backyard get together with this new content. (FYI – the new stilted foundation is perfect for creating a backyard deck!) You’ll even spot some patterns with nods to famous icons of The Sims…

FIXES & UPDATES

General Issues

  • Basements will not create irremovable flooring between levels.
  • Fixed an issue where Tattoos and Skin Details did not apply on Mac.
  • Fixed an issue that caused weighting for names, clothing, facial features, and skin tones to skew heavily in specific directions if City Living or Island Living were installed.
  • Solved the problem where showers were playing a sound even after deleted.
    • Spooookkyy.

Heads up about today’s The Sims 4 Update

16

As you all may know today is a big day for The Sims 4 on PC and Mac!

The base game will be getting the long-awaited Configurable Stairs as well as new items to celebrate the game’s 5th anniversary. On top of that The Sims Team has also confirmed that they’ll be bringing the Island Living Island Counters (for those who have the Island Living Expansion Pack) as well as fix numerous bugs in the game. This is everything that they’ve confirmed so far for the update although there could be a few other things and items that they haven’t mentioned or shown off.

Heads up about today’s The Sims 4 Update

This update for The Sims 4 will be out today, September 5th on PC and Mac. The update has been also confirmed for Consoles, although at a later date that’s yet to be confirmed.

Considering that all previous game updates for The Sims 4 have been released at 10AM PT / 7PM CET / 6PM BT, this update should be of no exception.

In case you run into some issues after updating your game, make sure your Mods / CC are disabled and that they’re eventually up-to-date with the latest version of The Sims 4. If you run into some other issues that are not related to Mods / CC, make sure you read some tips on ensuring a healthy game!

One more thing to mention and that’s the fact that this update is also being treated as a preparation for The Sims 4 Realm of Magic Game Pack. This means that we’ll be digging through the game files and looking for some information regarding the pack including the World Map and some other game code strings. If you don’t want the World Map to be spoiled to you as we did get a few comments before when finding the map and information early then look away! If we find any sensitive game code strings that spoil some of the information regarding gameplay we’ll make sure to lock it away behind a Spoiler Tab.
