The Sims 4 Blog: How to make a Spooky House for your Spooky Party

Don’t Make it Too Spooky

With the recent release of The Sims 4 Spooky Stuff*, your Sims can throw their very own Spooky Party, complete with costumes, pumpkins, and ghoulish snacks. Let’s make that party even better by building a #SpookyHouse for your party goers to revel in!

But making a spooky abode isn’t as easy as throwing spider webs all over the place (though that doesn’t hurt). It takes tact, and nuance, and unless you’re playing as the Goths, you may need a few tips…

Lay out the basics of your haunted house. There are some general themes to use that will set you down the right path when creating a foreboding home. Use the “Filter Items…” button in Build Mode to quickly narrow down your search to content that would be appropriate in a spooky setting. I recommend filtering under “Styles” and selecting “Queen Anne”. With your filter applied you can find a number of Victorian inspired “Styled Rooms” for a quick build, or try clicking on “Objects by Function” to see a wide assortment of individual objects that fit the theme.

Prepare your home to host a great party. Something I like to do to enhance the party atmosphere is to remove any chairs from my home’s dining room and use that space as a serving area instead. Include a bar that guests can get drinks from – or if you have The Sims 4 Luxury Party Stuff* you can add a drink fountain. Just before guests start to arrive, place a few of the new candy bowls that they can help themselves to. It’ll tide them over while you’re putting the finishing touches on delicious new finger food like Cheesy Eyeballs, Spooky Cookies, or the culinary pièce de résistance – the brand new Zombie Cake.

Create a scary living room with style! Your home’s living room is where your guests will likely mingle, and a good host adds everything they need for a spooktacular evening of fun. Try using the “Filter Items…” button in Build Mode again, but this time select “Packs”, and then choose “Spooky Stuff”. Now when you click on the “Objects by Function” button, you’ll see all of the new themed objects that come with The Sims 4 Spooky Stuff, and you’re ready to decorate. A variety of new chairs, tables, décor help create a setting that can only be described as spooky-shabby-chic.

Share the spooky spirit with the neighbourhood. Using the filter to again search for Spooky Stuff, you’ll find a number of objects perfect for the outdoors. Not only are the ghost lamps adorable, they come with multiple expressions that you may not have known about. Click on their colour variant bar and you’ll find each one has a different expression to match the party’s mood. My personal favourite outdoor object is the “Parlor Trix Graveyard Lantern” – a set of tombstones that light up in different colours, as well as emitting fog to really up the ambiance. If you’re going all out though, terrify the community with a gigantic spider crawling on your home… simply select the “Misunderstood Spider” object and before placing it press the “]” key on your keyboard a few times. With a couple of clicks, you’ll have a deadly creature meant to terrify guests as they arrive!

Party time! Carve those pumpkins! In addition to the aforementioned food, attendees will all want to partake in carving their very own pumpkins. Place multiple Pumpkin Carving Stations around your living room, and be sure to find a spot to place each completed pumpkin once they’re finished. It’s important to keep each station free so that every Sim gets a turn having fun carving. Sims that are skilled in handiness can even preserve each carved pumpkin, which in turn become perfect decoration pieces when lit with a flickering candle.

Welcome back to another Simmers Q&A, each week I take time to get to know another awesome simmer from the community and this week we are talking to the fabulous Mollie who is better known as The English Simmer, her YouTube channel is crammed full of simsational content! So I asked Mollie all about her simming lifestyle and how it all began:

Hello! Firstly a warm welcome to The Sims Community website, we are very pleased to have you here, now we always kick start our Q&A by asking how did you become a simmer and which version of The Sims started your journey?

Hi there! I first became a simmer during the original Sims PC series. There were already a few Expansion Packs released and my older brother originally installed them on our home PC where I would watch him play for hours on end until my parents finally decided that I could play too. From there, I completely fell in love with the game at around 7 years old.

So you fell in love right from the start that’s fantastic! Now we know you’re very popular in the simming community and your truly epic channel has attracted over 150,000 subscribers – a huge congratulations by the way! How does it feel knowing all these people enjoy your content?

Thanks so much! The number honestly doesn’t hit me that often. I sometimes have to look at my channel and ask myself “Is that really mine? Are people really out there listening to me talk for half an hour almost every day?” But it is such an incredible feeling. Receiving tweets, emails and comments from people who all have the same interest as me is one of the best feelings in the world. I’m just thankful that so many different people with different backgrounds and stories can all connect to this game franchise in different ways. I think that really is a testament to the game itself.

We couldn’t agree more! So we noticed you have a fantastic selection of playlists on your channel and not only do you play TS4 but you have also included TS3 and TS2. Tell me which has been your most favorite let’s play series to record and why?

I always struggle answer this question because I feel like a mother being asked to choose her favourite child. I’m going to cheat a little and say that I love all of my Let’s Plays for different reasons. Late Night was my first and is one of my very favourite expansions so I really just threw my everything into that. Generations was a let’s play that really took off on my channel and I loved how interactive it was with my viewers. I felt like everyone could really get involved in the process of naming the kids and things like that. But more recently, I’d have to say my Young’Uns Let’s Play because I’m just playing and I have these amazing characters that I am really connected to.

The Young’Uns is one of our favourites too! Now you may have heard The Sims 4 Get Together expansion pack is due to be released this November, is it something you’re looking forward to? If so do you think you will create some video content using this pack?

I’m definitely looking forward to Get Together! I already have some sims floating around in my head for a Let’s Play with that expansion. I have a feeling there are going to be some major characters and the pack just seems like so much fun to me. I’ve always loved the social and night life aspect of The Sims so I cannot wait for it to be released.

Fantastic! We can’t wait to see your creations! So finally we have to ask what would you most like to see released for TS4? Is there anything you truly miss from previous versions and have you ever had any fresh ideas for The Sims content?

Am I allowed to say toddlers? I just think they would look adorable in The Sims 4. But moving on from that, I would really enjoy for holiday destinations to make a comeback in this series. As a sort of homage to The Sims: On Holiday (Vacation). I think TS4 has amazing graphics that could work really well with a beach getaway location or a ski resort of sorts, I’d really love to see that. As for anything original, I think an activities based expansion for the younger sims could be extremely fun. For example, a playable prom for teenagers where you could ask out your crush or just steal the dance floor with your crazy moves. They could introduce sports teams so you could play a game over the weekend with your team mates. I would pay good money for that.

The Sims 4: I’m a Lover Challenge and How Jealousy Works

As I started to play through the game after getting the September update, I was pretty excited. I know I wasn’t the only one, everyone was buzzing about the fact that we were FINALLY getting a new trait! In it’s own little way, Jealousy is a great addition to the game and adds so much more depth to your sims relationships. I decided after a bit of thought that I would finally try the “I’m a Lover” Challenge, that was re-written by DaniiPantiies, also known as Whitey28 on YouTube, for The Sims 4. The rules for the challenge can be found here.

Meet Simone Ingram, my founder for the “I’m a Lover” challenge I decided to do as my first Let’s Play on YouTube. After following all the rules, I made her two free traits Jealousy and Ambitious. Even though the rules state you don’t have to play this challenge with Legacy rules, I realized that I really wanted to, and chose to have a strict last born female heir policy to make the challenge a bit harder.

Automatically after you click on Jealousy in C.A.S this is the animation that the game will give you. It’s hilarious to watch

Here are a couple reasons why Jealousy is an amazing addition:

If you love playing your game focused on one couple, it makes is so much more entertaining!
It has so many cute romantic and even some friendly interactions in chat that you didn’t have before.
It adds character depth, some realistic qualities, and just makes the game; a ton more fun. (See what I did there, pun intended)

Poland’s popular retail website Empik has listed The Sims 4 Bundle Pack 2!

Nothing’s yet official about which Packs are included in this Bundle, but according to the leak that surfaced on 23rd of July, it’s possible that it’ll contain Outdoor Retreat and Cool Kitchen.

According to Empik, The Sims 4 Bundle Pack 2 will be releasing on 22nd of October. We’ll keep you updated about this bundle as new info release!

Let’s Play: Runaway Teen Challenge

I’m sure we’re all aware of this challenge by now, and it’s one of my favourites to play to get me out of my typical rut. However if you don’t know what it is, Kawaii posts a link to the rules in the description of the video but I will also include them briefly here for you.

You cannot build any kind of shelter for yourself until you have earned the simoleons to do so.
You cannot have any electronics or appliances or cell phone access (put it on silent) until you have a home.
You can’t have a part time job and you can’t have a full time job until you are a young adult and have a home.
You cannot cook/shower/etc. on other peoples lots or interact with adults until you are a young adult – you’re a runaway, they’ll report you. But you can interact with children or other teens.
You can shower and use the bathroom at any public place – like the gym.
You can fish, garden and dig all you want and sell them.
You can not go to school.
Each time you travel, subtract $10 simoleons from your funds using the money cheat.

Kawaii recently started this on her channel this week, and I’m rather excited to watch it unfold!

To finish this week, here is an outstanding speed build by Chrillsims3. As part of the Block Party Challenge, this is the tallest building he has created yet, with inspiration from Fluffy – the three headed dog/guardian in the Harry Potter series. It’s definitely one of my personal favourites as it’s mesmerizing to watch. It reminds me of something that the Wolff family would upgrade to from The Sims 3!

The Sims 4: September 2015 Patch Overview

The Sims Team released a brand new patch on September 24th, 2015 including some new features and bug fixes. For a full list of patch notes, CLICK HERE!

New Trait – Jealous!

Your Sims can now become jealous with this brand new trait!

Your Sim can get a Tense or Confident emotion buff from this trait.

The Confident buff is rewarded for having your spouse nearby, while the tense buff is given when your spouse is out of reach for some amount of time.

New Limited Interactions: Trick / Treat

Trick and Treat interactions will last for a limited time only. The Trick interaction will scare the second sim (Playful +2 buff), while the Treat interaction will give that sim a piece of candy (Happy +2 buff).

These interactions are easily recognisable with a calendar icon next to them, indicating that they last for a limited period of time.

Claiming beds

If you had multiple beds in your house, it might’ve happened that your Sims go to sleep in beds that they weren’t supposed to use. Well, those days are gone!

Each Sim is now free to claim the bed of your choice.

Ability to resize rugs

You can now resize rugs by pressing Shift + ]!

Fixed underground saunas

Previously, when placing saunas from The Sims 4 Spa Day, you would get a message saying ”Must be indoors”. Don’t worry, those days are over as well!

Lucy Bradshaw leaving EA / Rachel Franklin as a new Maxis VP

Today, Electronic Arts’ CEO Andrew Wilson announced that after 23 years, Lucy Bradshaw is moving on from Electronic Arts.

Andrew also mentioned that Rachel Franklin (known as SimGuruRachel on twitter) will be taking over her role. We’re excited for the future of Maxis and we wish best of luck to Lucy’s new career path!

Today we are announcing that Lucy Bradshaw is moving on from Electronic Arts. Through 23 years with our company, Lucy has brought an incredible passion for games and our player community. I want to thank Lucy for her dedication to EA, her contributions to Maxis, and the creative spirit she infused in every one of her teams and projects. We wish her the best as she takes on her next adventure.

There is amazing work happening in our Maxis studios today. Rachel Franklin, who has been leading our Sims Studio, will now take over leadership of the Maxis group. Rachel will continue to lead the teams working on more new content and cultivating the passionate player community in The Sims 4, and now she will drive our efforts on other new Maxis concepts in development as well.

Across The Sims 4 on PC and The Sims FreePlay and SimCity BuildIt on mobile, Maxis IP has never had a bigger and more engaged player base. As we look to the future, we want to expand the scope of opportunity for Maxis to reach more players on PC and mobile, as well as explore cross-platform play. Sims have a new social trait to choose – Jealous!

These Sims get Jealous more easily than other Sims. They gain a boost of Confidence from being around their significant other, but get Tense if they haven’t seen them recently.

Be wary of those jealous tendencies however – we spent some time encouraging Sims to react more consistently in situations where jealous reactions are warranted.

Two new interactions have snuck their way into your social options along with a special icon next to them…

The icon is there to indicate that these are limited time interactions.

Limited? Yup, for a limited time only, we’ve introduced “Trick” and “Treat” interactions in preparation for that spooky festival at the end of October. We will be sharing more info on why being a Tricker or a Treater might matter in the coming weeks.

A new interaction “Claim” can now be found on beds. Choosing this interaction will cause Sims to prefer the chosen bed when sleep comes to claim them.

I know, I’m excited about the fixed issues too!

General Issues

We fixed an issue that was causing some users to be unable to progress past acquaintance relationship status, no matter how high their relationship.

This would be most obvious as players attempted to progress up the Friend of the World aspiration track – finding they were unable to complete several of the milestone tracks.

The creative juices are flowing, the melody is visualized, and you are ready to write that song! And then you aren’t… you just want a snack, chat with your friends, or maybe it’s just time for work. But wait, you can’t stop writing the song! “Why!?” you scream silently.

We fixed an issue that could be caused when using a trackpad, resulting in the cursor becoming stuck (most often while in Create a Sim), and leave users in an unplayable state.

The Clayblob and Microscope slides are now live draggable.

We were creating inventory issues by allowing items in the inventory that could not be live dragged, resulting in some bad behaviors.

Sims that are soulmates prior to reaching the “Achieve Soulmate Relationship with Spouse” aspiration goal, will now auto complete that goal.

New and Improved Soulmate 2.0! …when your first soulmate just doesn’t cut the aspirational mustard.

Nothing says completed Space Rock collection like an Orchid! Aren’t space rocks and orchids practically synonyms for one another?

“Hey mom, did you see this cool orchid I got from space camp?”

Fine, we changed this. Now, you get a plaque. A commemorative plaque… are you happy? Space Rock Commemorative Plaque… it hurts just to say it.

Elder Sims hair color no longer changes to grey when modifying their eye color.

I knew it! Eye color, grey, hair, changes – it all adds up! Elders are old!

We have added more lot sizes to the gallery filters in order to properly filter lots into their own sorts.

The 40×30 and 50×40 sizes now have their own filter.

We fixed an issue that was incorrectly locking the male beige cardigan (ymTop_CardiganCollar_Beige) from being worn by Sims.

Sims now prefer to wash their dishes in a dishwasher rather than a sink.

Divorced Sims, who live in the same household… really? Because that’s not a tiny bit awkward… will no longer autonomously sleep together in the same bed.

The level 3 Criminal reward interaction “Pick Pocket” is once again available under the Mischief category after being unlocked.

The “Go on 2 Dates” goal of Amore Amateur milestone will now properly track for all dates, no matter who initiated them.

The help text for teen careers will no longer reference school performance tips.

You will no longer be able to upgrade a broken refrigerator.

I suppose, technically you can upgrade a broken refrigerator, since repairing it could be considered an upgrade from the broken state. So, it should have read “You will no longer be able to choose the interaction named upgrade when the refrigerator is broken.”

But it was probably fine not going into that extra level of detail.

The “Make a Friend” goal for the child Social aspiration will now properly satisfy… when you make a friend.

Rugs now properly resize with the “[” and “]” keys when using the resize cheat.

This has just opened up an entire new world of home decorating possibilities for me!

Tense Sims can now resume their wood working crafts.

I always find that when I’m feeling stressed out and tense, that wielding a hammer and a saw do wonders for my tension.

I’m sure it’ll be fine.

Fixed an issue where some sculpture objects were not able to be cloned with the eyedropper tool.

The Lice Cold Freezer will now allow Sims to properly route to it in order to make a purchase.

Outdoor Retreat

Placing a home from the gallery on top of a rented home in Granite Falls will no longer make the game unplayable.

Spa Day

Yoga is definitely good for your health and fitness, but you should no longer expect your Sim to become hulking masses of pure muscle tone madness by doing Yoga alone.

We fixed an issue that was preventing the use of Saunas when placed in a basement.

Perfect Patio Stuff

The Hot Tub control panel should no longer hide for no apparent reason.

The Buy a Hot Tub whim will now only complete when you buy a hot tub… not when you buy anything other than a hot tub.

Cool Kitchen Stuff

Restocking an ice cream bowl will now also include ice cream in the bowl.

I’ve often found that when bringing my children to an ice cream shop, having ice cream as the end result often yielded greater positive results over simply stepping in to grab a spoon.

Dragging a carton of ice cream onto a counter will no longer cause the carton of ice cream to disappear.

Leaving a carton of ice cream on the counter however does increase its probability of disappearance through natural causes.

The Steam Catcher (a ceiling light) has been made easier to find by sorting it within the stove sort.

That made more sense when we fixed it than it does when we read about the fix.

Ice Cream tubs can now be live dragged into the refrigerator for safe keeping.

Now you can make tubs and tubs of ice cream without feeling guilty as you watch them melt away on the counter tops. Just place them in a fridge for a dozen nights of ice cream delights!

Dragging a partially eaten bowl of ice cream will no longer refill the ice cream bowl magically.

Why can’t this be true!? Whyyyyyyyy!?
