The Sims 4 Urban Homage Kit Review: Stunning in the City

A Blast from the Past

I said it before, and I’ll say it again: who doesn’t love a comeback story? The Sims 4 Urban Homage Kit was originally released on April 18th, 2024, but, with the release of the Creative Sparks Bundle—a limited-time deal that pairs Urban Homage with The Sims 4 Artist Studio Kit—we realized that we hadn’t given this cool kit the love it deserves! Especially since the talented Ebonix helped this kit take shape as one of the first collaborative kits. We always love to see Black simmers win!

Urban Homage Kit – Description at a Glance

PREVIEW

These are the vibe we’re given off the cuff from the official EA pack description.

Strut boldly into the now, with iconic styles from The Sims 4 Urban Homage Kit. Simmer Ebonix collaborated on every detail of this collection, which features expressive colors, striking patterns, and accessories that inspire confidence.

Embrace a medley of stand-out colors and lively patterns! Iconic graffiti shirts, a bright bodysuit, and glamorous nails are just some of the options your Sim has for self expression.

This kit adds 29 new assets exclusively for Teen to Elder Sims, with an emphasis on clothing items and accessories. While this CAS kit has content for both masculine and feminine-framed Sims, as usual, it weighs heavily on the feminine side.

In this kit, feminine-framed Sims get ten tops (one of which is a bodysuit), five bottoms, six accessories (an earring, a necklace stack, a set of fingernails, a nose ring, a full hand ring stack for either hand), a pair of platform boots, and a turban-style headwrap.

Masculine-framed Sims get six tops, five bottoms, and one full-body outfit.

Most (but not all) of the pack assets are unisex.

Sims 4 Refined Living Room Kit Review

Our Review of The Sims 4 Urban Homage Kit

I’ll be honest, since its release? Urban Homage has been a mainstay in my own personal gameplay. As a Black simmer myself I, obviously, make a lot of Black Sims, and while I’ll admit my own personal style is a bit more on the grungy alternative side, I do deeply love this kit and argue for its versatility.

In my previous kit review, a major complaint I had about The Sims 4 Prairie Dreams Kit is that, while beautiful, it was very plain. Basic. As a PC player who owns a majority of the available packs? I don’t want to buy basics. What I want to spend my hard-earned dollar on is something bold and eclectic. Something that The Sims Team feels a bit more skittish about slotting into a major expansion or game pack due to it being a bit divisive and/or “not fitting” in with the general vibe. I think kits should be about purchasing something that’s just plain different.

This pack fits that idea of bold and eclectic perfectly—not only being richly colored, but also encapsulating a style that’s underrepresented in major pack releases. The “homage” in The Sims 4 Urban Homage Kit feels very much like Black American Y2K fashion. That turn-of-the-millennium urban chic that you would see rocked by all the cool girls (and guys!) out on the town in early 2000s. A trend we’re seeing a resurgence of online, but one Ebonix herself attests to drawing inspiration from in her interview with The Sims Team on her creative process for the kit!

My biggest criticism with this pack is that—as always—male Sims are vastly underrepresented.

Don’t get me wrong; I LOVE the hoodie/overall outfit combo (even though it wasn’t made to be seamlessly unsex so it morphs poorly on feminine framed Sims) but like….no sideways ball caps? No oversized button ups?? No baseball jerseys???

Ebonix…you couldn’t even get The Sims Team to let our mans have some Jordans? I’m heartbroken. Truly, I am.

But in all seriousness; I think this kit represents a specific fashion sense that’s under-represented in The Sims 4. Something that kits should be about, not just rehashing the same sad beige mom styles over and over, but being vibrant. Being bold, and new, and maybe introducing you to your latest fashion obsession. I mean, who wouldn’t want their Sim to look like an extra on ‘Martin‘? Especially now when seemingly (almost) every fit from the 1990s is #goals.

I think The Sims 4 Throwback Fit Kit would compliment The Sims 4 Urban Homage Kit as they both have similar inspiration points of “urban streetwear” as well as having the bonus of being colorful! Be sure to send @ebonixsims some love on one of her many social pages, and be sure to support collaboration creators on those pages when you can. We’re strongest as a community when we uplift each other.
