Most of the time, everyone is getting along on the Living the Dream island. Miis are making friends, getting into romantic relationships, and simply enjoying spending time together. Truly just a bunch of Mii friends and partners living the dream in island paradise, having story times, blowing bubbles together, and skipping majestically along the shoreline. What could go wrong? A lot, actually. Because Tomodachi Life fights are in fact a thing.
Sometimes, relationships—platonic and romantic—can get as spoiled as the food mart’s Spoiled Milk. Miis can get in minor spats as well as full blow out fights that can strain and end relationships entirely. To put it simply, things can get ugly between your Miis, which makes for both hilarious and heartbreaking hijinks. Plus, after the May 2026 update to Living the Dream, some players have reported having way more fights than before. Which is definitely the case for me, seeing as there’s a new fight almost every time I log in to check the game for the day.
So whether a fight pandemic has hit your game, you’re trying to prevent a fight from happening (or want to learn how to start one), or you’re trying to fix the broken relationship between you and your Mii best friend, here's everything to know about Tomodachi Life fights.

The Basics of Tomodachi Life Fights
There are levels to fighting in Living the Dream. Miis can have minor arguments, which will lead to them walking around with lightning bolts of frustration or annoyance floating above their heads. These are not fights, though these smaller negative interactions, if not remediated with food, head rubs, or gifts, can become something bigger or lead to the deterioration of Miis’ relationships.

It will be clear when an actual fight is happening, or when one happened when you were away (because how dare you leave the Miis for even five minutes). You can spot Miis actively fighting by throwing items and insults back and forth. Or, if you log on after a fight, you might find Miis shouting angrily at the ocean or punching air. (The game will also play some pretty fun music when your Miis are mad.) Depending on the situation, your Miis might even go up in flames! To be clear, your Miis are not going to get hurt or anything. Well, that is, if you don’t count emotional damage.
After Miis fight, they’ll still be friends technically. But they’ll have a Fighting label and their status will be, Still [friendship status]? (the friendship status will be whatever their status was as a pair prior to the fight).

Romantic Fights
Romantic Tomodachi Life fights are a little bit of a special situation, brought on by jealousy. No matter how strong a romantic relationship is, a jealousy cutscene can trigger. For example, say Mii A and Mii B are married. If Mii A sees Mii B interacting with a close friend of a gender they’re attracted to, a cutscene can play that results in the beginning of a serious marital spat. They’ll still be in a relationship, but their status will change to Fighting: Still [in love]?
Miis Will Try To Make Up
After a Tomodachi Life fight happens, Miis will stomp around the island angrily or stew in their houses with a red thought bubble of anger hanging above their heads. Sometimes, it’s up to you to calm them down, which can be done by giving them food or gifts that they like. Once that happens, they’ll calm down and try to make up with the Mii they’re fighting with.

Other times, you’ll have the option to bring in a mediator. You can bring another Mii (ideally someone close to the angry, mid-fight Mii) to try and calm them down. This doesn’t always work, but when it does, it will result in them wanting to make up. Keep in mind that the make up cutscene will immediately play after they calm down.

The make up cutscene will play and the calmed down Mii will apologize. The Mii they’re fighting with can either accept or reject the apology. In the case of the former, they’ll make up and become friends or close lovers again. Yay! Mission accomplished!
But some Miis will reject the apology, which will send the apologizing Mii into a depressed state where they gain the sadness bar. The Mii who rejected the apology will not be sad. They might tell you, the player, about the fight, and you’ll have the option to tell them to try to make up or let it go. Neither option will trigger an apology in the moment, though the positive one will help more to keep the possibility of rekindling the relationship later.
Sometimes, you can also get other Miis to help make the sad Mii's sadness go away (drag a Mii to the sad Mii and you might get a cutscene), but that doesn't fix the fighting status.

The Consequences Of Apology Rejections
After a fight between friends doesn’t get resolved by an apology, the Miis will either keep the Fighting label or become Ex-friends. If they stay fighting, there’s a chance the Mii who originally declined to make up will change their mind and go apologize. However, Miis can also stay mad, resist your efforts to have them make up, and end up becoming Ex-friends.

Married Miis who get in fights and stay fighting can get a divorce. You can try to avoid a split by having fighting spouses talk it out, but that doesn’t always work.
How To Prevent or Start Fights
In my experience, when Miis are neglected, they get upset and seem more likely to pick a fight with another Mii. So taking care of Miis needs—feeding them, answering thought bubbles—and keeping them happy seems to help keep them out of trouble (though it’s not a foolproof method). Also, when Miis have the blue sadness lines or orange-yellow lightning bolts of frustration, make sure to relieve them before they can bring their grump into conversations. Of course, this is easier said than done because it requires you to be constantly checking in with your Miis and keeping them out of trouble.
By the same logic, if you want more drama on your island, all you have to do is keep your Miis miserable. Don't alleviate their suffering (let their negative emotions stay), don't try to have them repair friendships with Miis they have Kinda getting along or Not getting along statuses with, and just ignore them. Just like real life, if Miis stay in a bad mood for long enough, bad things are bound to happen.
How To Fix Tomodachi Life Fights
Whether or not fighting Miis can become friends again depends on you. You have to force them to be around each other, which won’t always go well. Miis with an Ex-friends status will avoid each other to the extent that if you drag them together, one can run away, literally fleeing the site of the friendship crime. If you force them together enough (which can take a lot of dragging and dropping), they will have a few unique cutscenes, which, if triggered, can help improve their relationship. Ex-friends move from Strained to It’s complicated to Thinks about often to Hopes to make up, and then back to friends eventually.
Now, if you don’t want to repeatedly drag and drop your Miis to force a cutscene, you can cheat things in certain circumstances. If you did not mark your fighting Miis as related in the Mii maker when creating them, you can go into Mii maker and put them in the ‘relative’ category, which can improve their relationship. You can’t do that with romantic partners for hopefully very obvious reasons.

If you log in and find that two Miis are fighting, you can also do a quick soft reset (closing out of your game without saving). Sometimes, upon reopening the game, the Miis will no longer be fighting.
You Can't Always Control Tomodachi Life Fights
Despite your best efforts, sometimes the Miis are just going to beef. Sometimes you just can’t prevent Tomodachi Life fights and are in fact going to have to sit there and watch as the Miis you so lovingly helped become friends have a showdown and throw away all of your hard work by fighting and then not making up.
The silver lining about fights is that no status is permanent. You can repair relationships between Miis in fights, Miis who are ex-friends, and even divorced Miis—ex-romantic partners can and absolutely do get back together. Long story short, Tomodachi Life fights, while potentially frustrating, can be fixed.
The randomness of Living the Dream goes both ways. It can make the game fun through unpredictability and silliness or it can make the game miserable by breaking apart your Miis. As people totally say, Tomodachi Life is like a box of chocolates: you really never know what you’re going to get.
