Discover University: Everything We Noticed from the Gameplay Trailer

The Sims just uploaded a new gameplay trailer for The Sims 4 Discover University today and it revealed a lot of exciting new details about the pack! Here’s all the new information we gathered from the trailer.

PSST! Haven’t seen the trailer, yet? Watch the full trailer here!

Scholarships

Discover University: Everything We Noticed from the Gameplay Trailer

In the trailer, the Sim called Julia says she got into Foxbury Institute on a scholarship, but later lost that scholarship when she neglected her studies and had to take out a loan in order to finish her education. While this is a rather painful mirror of real-life, we’re sure plenty of Simmers will appreciate being able to both gain and lose scholarships based on their Sim’s actions.

Student Loans

Discover University: Everything We Noticed from the Gameplay Trailer

On the subject of loans, the trailer confirms that student loans are indeed a new feature of Discover University. This is sure to add a level of much-appreciated realism to the game. Let’s just hope our Sims have an easier time paying off those loans after university than many people in the real world.

Juggling Parenthood and Education

In the trailer, a young adult Sim can be seen studying while her toddler plays with some toys beside her desk. It’s great that our Sims won’t have to choose between their children and their education. Here’s to all those hard-working college students with kids! You rock!

Secret Societies

Discover University: Everything We Noticed from the Gameplay Trailer

Secret societies were briefly mentioned before, but this is the first time we’ve actually seen a glimpse of them in-game. According to Julia, she accidentally wound up in this secret society when she joined a study group. Could this be a hint at how to join a secret society when we get our hands on the expansion? Only time will tell!

Study Groups

Discover University: Everything We Noticed from the Gameplay Trailer

Speaking of study groups, there appears to be more than one our Sims can join. Julia explains that after leaving the secret society, she joined a more traditional study group in order to get her grades back on track. Study groups look like a great way for our Sims to socialise and make friends while still focusing on their academics.

Roommates

Discover University: Everything We Noticed from the Gameplay Trailer

In the trailer, Julia can be seen arguing with her roommate, whom she later becomes best friends with. It’s hard to imagine a proper university experience without roommates so we’re happy to see that roommates will be a prominent feature of Discover University.

Transferring Schools

When no one at Foxbury Institute believes Julia’s claims that the robots they study are planning world domination, she decides to transfer to the University of Britechester. This is a really exciting piece of news! It’s not uncommon for university students in the real world to change their minds about their career goals, so it’s great to know that our Sims can transfer schools if they decide that the one they picked isn’t the right fit for them.

Living On or Off Campus

In the trailer, Julia says she moved between a lot of different dorms before finally deciding to get a house off campus. This kind of freedom to live where and how we want while in university is going to allow for greater freedom to tell our own stories our own way. It’s also yet another layer of realism we can expect to see in Discover University.

New Careers

Three new careers are specifically mentioned in the trailer: Lawyer, Engineer, and Teacher. We don’t know much about what exactly these careers will entail just yet, but if they are all active careers, this would put Discover University on par with a previous career-oriented expansion, Get To Work, which also came with three active careers.

The Sims 4 Discover University: Official Blog Post

EA.com has published a new blog post about The Sims 4 Discover University where they reveal loads of new, detailed information about the University of Britechester and Foxbury Institute. Included is a full list of degrees our Sims can study, the rundown about financial aid, and all about what our Sims can expect from their college lives, including school activities.

Read the full blog post below!

From EA.com:

University of Britechester

This bastion of higher education is particularly known for molding students into smart, well-rounded Sims ready to face the world’s challenges. The University of Britechester offers a variety of degree paths for its students, including distinguished offerings strongly focused on the arts and humanities.

Degrees: Biology, Computer Science, Economics, Physics, Psychology, and Villainy

Distinguished Degrees: Art History, Culinary Arts, Drama, Fine Art, History, Language and Literature, and Communications

What else does UBrite offer? On game day in the Britechester Spirit Corps Organization, your Sim can socialize, show off their dance moves, maybe do a keg stand, and promote Dragon pride. If they want to explore their creative side they can head to the canal by the commons for some outdoor figure painting with the Art Society. And they can socialize or go head to head with some of the university’s best and brightest in the challenging Debate Guild.

Foxbury Institute

Your Sim may want to opt for a more modern campus focused on creating innovative leaders, and the Foxbury Institute should be a great fit. This premier university boasts impressive facilities as well as both events and distinguished degree programs geared toward science and technology.

Degrees: Art History, Culinary Arts, Drama, Fine Art, History, Language and Literature, and Communications

Distinguished Degrees: Biology, Computer Science, Economics, Physics, Psychology, and Villainy

Some of Foxbury’s great organizations and events include the Foxbury Spirit Squad, where your Sim can don the red and gold to support their school at School Spirit Day with a juice keg, juice pong, and maybe even a little streaking. When it’s time to take a break from cramming, your Sim can attend bar night with The Brainiacs honor society for a little rest and relaxation. Want your Sim to help lead the way to the inevitable robot uprising? They’ll love creating their future overlords with the Bot Savants. And if your bot has what it takes to reign supreme in the Utili-Bot Contest, head to the quad to enter and see if your Sim will be the next Bot Master!

Financial Aid

Whether your Sim chooses the hallowed halls of the University of Britechester with its focus on arts and humanities, or the cutting-edge Foxbury Institute and its science and tech slant, there’s a ton to do, see, and learn as they journey through higher education!

But before they start packing their bags, doing a little research on how they’re going to pay for education is a good idea. There are tons of scholarships and grants available for both academically and athletically gifted students, as well as need-based scholarships. If your Sim has already started down their career path and wants to further their education, they may want to consider a career scholarship. You’ll be able to find out which scholarships are available for your Sims to help cover their college costs.

Your Sims also have the opportunity to take out student loans to help fund their education, but be aware that payments will be due as soon as they graduate.

College Life

Both schools offer students a variety of amenities and opportunities to live either on-campus or off. Decorating dorm rooms, hanging out with roommates, or just playing a little ping pong are only a few of the new experiences your Sims can look forward to. Need to study for a big exam? Why not join a cram session at the commons? Don’t forget to squeeze in some fun After School Activities like joining the E-Sports or Soccer Team to put their skills in the spotlight or head to a spirit event at the bar dressed in their best school colors.

However! While pulling pranks on the other university or doing a little painting in the park can be a lot of fun, don’t let your Sims have so much fun they forget term papers, exams, presentations, and homework. Let your Sims get too distracted and their grades will likely drop – which could lead to big problems if they’re relying on a scholarship or grant.

The Sims 4 is coming to Steam: Here’s what we can expect

EA has announced yesterday that they’ll be making available some of their top-selling games on Steam – including The Sims 4.

This partnership will bring a select library of EA’s games plus their subscription service EA Access over to Steam. Before we begin with what this means for The Sims 4 and its packs, let’s briefly just talk about the Steam platform.

Steam, just like Origin, is a web + client platform that allows you to purchase games and launch them using the Steam client program. Similarly to Origin, Steam keeps track of your play hours, achievements and more. This platform also offers a Workshop which lets you upload and download custom mods and creations for various types of games. One of the examples is Cities Skylines’ Steam Workshop which is loaded with custom content and mods that can be easily implemented in-game using Steam.

The Sims 4 is coming to Steam: Here’s what we can expect

Now, what does this all mean for The Sims 4?

Currently we don’t have much official information specifically for this game, but we can already set some expectations from EA’s first title that’s already available for pre-order on Steam: Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. According to the game page on Steam, you will be needing both Steam + Origin in order to fully activate and play the game:

  • Incorporates 3rd-party DRM: EA on-line activation and Origin client software installation and background use required.
  • Requires 3rd-Party Account: EA Account (Supports Linking to Steam Account)

Although it hasn’t been confirmed just yet, we could expect the same set of requirements for The Sims 4 and its packs as well. New players who would purchase The Sims 4 first via Steam would have to create and link their Origin / EA account in order to play the game. We can also speculate that current The Sims 4 players who own the game on Origin will be able to link their account with Steam – “Supports Linking to Steam Account” –  and have their entire Sims 4 library transferred over to Steam. Still, this is just speculation and we don’t know for sure if this will be the case when the game releases on this platform.

Another useful feature would be Steam’s Workshop that lets you submit and download Mods and Custom Content for various games. This feature hasn’t been confirmed yet for The Sims 4 and we don’t know for sure if it’ll be made available for The Sims 4 after the launch, but an addition like this would bring plenty of possibilities for the entire community.

Using online features such as The Gallery through Steam shouldn’t be a problem considering that Origin would run quietly in the background. The entire Gallery is built on players and their Origin IDs, so we yet have to see if that’s gonna remain the same.

All in all, it’s good to see that The Sims 4 won’t be exclusive to just Origin anymore and that long-time Steam users are going to be able to enjoy the game as well.

EA Earnings Release: The Sims 4 stronger than ever; The Sims Franchise sold over $5 billion

Electronic Arts has just completed their earnings release call for Q2 of Fiscal Year 2020. In this earnings release EA has talked a lot about The Sims 4 and mentioned some interesting facts regarding the franchise in general and that it managed to surpass 5 billion dollars in lifetime sales!

Here’s everything they’ve mentioned in the release for The Sims 4:

  • The Sims 4 also continues to be an incredible long-term live service with a growing audience. Monthly average players are up more than 40% year-over-year in The Sims 4, and engagement across the franchise has led The Sims to surpass $5 billion in lifetime sales. The Sims continues to be one of the great franchises in gaming, and we have plans to bring new experiences to its amazing players for a long time to come.
  • And in Apex Legends, our EA SPORTS franchises, The Sims 4, Anthem and Star Wars Battlefront II, our communities will all have new content and new experiences to dive into during the holiday quarter.
  • We have ongoing growth expectations for The Sims 4, with new expansions and all-new ways to engage and grow the community.
  • Live services strength in Ultimate Team, The Sims 4, Apex Legends and FIFA Online drove performance significantly above last year.
  • Live services net bookings were up 50% year on year, to $493 million, another new Q2 record. The increase was driven by Apex Legends, Ultimate Team, in Madden, FIFA and NHL, The Sims 4, and FIFA Online, partially offset by the tail of Battlefield 1 DLC.
  • We expect to drive growth in all of our major live services next year, including Ultimate Team, Apex Legends, FIFA Online and The Sims.
  • As Andrew noted, the Sims is now a $5 billion franchise for us, and it continues to grow, driven by new content and new platforms.
  • Live services extend and enhance the experience of those games. Apex Legends, FIFA, The Sims 4, Galaxy of Heroes and more of our top franchises have thriving global communities spanning hundreds of millions of players.
