Will Marley make their own mark on the world or will they run into their fair share of trouble?
Welcome to our eighth entry in our Story Starter Kits series! If you missed all the info on Story Starter Kits, you can read more about what they are and how they work in our introductory article!
This month, we’re bringing you a runaway teen who doesn’t have much by way of material possessions but has a big personality and plenty of determined optimism.
Colour Outside the Lines
Marley’s always been a bit different but that’s never bothered them. They’ve always wanted to stand out from the crowd and be their own person in every aspect of life, from their fashion to their taste in décor and especially with their artwork.
Marley grew up an only child in a single parent household. Their dad always loved Marley’s creativity and colourful personality and supported them 100% in everything they did. He was at every school art show and every square inch of Marley’s childhood home was filled with their artwork that their dad proudly framed and displayed, even when Marley didn’t think it was their best work.
But when Marley turned 14, their dad remarried and Marley’s new stepmother did not approve of them. At. All. She thought Marley’s individuality was just teen rebellion and tried to make Marley conform to her idea of what a “respectable” teenager was supposed to be. She tried to control everything Marley did, from the way they dressed to who they hung out with. She even went around the house taking down all of Marley’s artwork and threw it in the trash, saying it was tacky.
At first, Marley’s dad tried to step in and defend his child but he wasn’t a very confrontational person and was easily intimidated into silence by his new wife’s pushy attitude. Feeling disrespected by their stepmom and betrayed by their dad, Marley couldn’t take living in that house anymore. When they turned 16, they ran away with their pet goldfish, Frida, to try and find some semblance of freedom and belonging.
They managed to secure a deposit on a small apartment in San Myshuno using their savings from their part-time job as a barista. The place is kind of a dump but it’s in Marley’s favourite area of the city. For a budding artist, there’s no location better than the Arts Quarter. Their plan is to finish high school with high enough grades to secure a full scholarship to Britechester’s distinguished Fine Arts program, but that’s easier said than done while also working a part-time job to pay the rent on your own.
The city can also be a pretty rough place for a teenager with no parental guidance. Will Marley make their own mark on the world or will they run into their fair share of trouble?

Starving Artist
This tiny one bedroom apartment in a trendy area of the city is a steal at its low price point… if you don’t mind the rats and the faulty fuse box that likes to spark now and then. The landlord lives out of town and isn’t too picky about who they rent to as long as they can fill up the space with paying renters. Unfortunately, they don’t care much about anything else, either, including maintenance.
