Moonpetal Nectar
To learn the Moonpetal Nectar recipe, a Sim needs to order Moonpetal Nectar at a bar. Moonpetal Nectar gives Werewolves an “increased sense of calm”. But, drinking too much Moonpetal Nectar can also cause the opposite effect.
Plasma Nectar
Learning the Plasma Nectar recipe is simple! Order a Plasma Nectar at a bar to receive the recipe.
This Nectar helps Vampire Sims feel “happy and refreshed”. Lightly aged or more Plasma Nectars increase a Vampire’s refreshment.
Not a vampire? All other Sims should avoid drinking Plasma Nectar.
Valerian Nectar
To unlock the Valerian Nectar recipe, order a Valerian Nectar at any bar.
This recipe makes all Sims feel happy, but with an extra kick for Spellcasters! Lightly Aged or older Nectars will have an increased effect on Spellcasters.
Vitality Nectar
This nectar recipe can be found by searching Wild Grass! Ask the Mysterious Rancher for more information.
Aging Nectars
Want better Nectar? Or increased profits? Leaving Nectar bottles for long periods of time will help them age. Storing them in a basement or cellar will help Nectar age faster. Nectar Racks increase the speed significantly faster.
Missed Opportunity
Unfortunately, The Sims 4 Horse Ranch did not add Nectar to the Dine Out Menu! Lucky for us, Icemunmun stepped up for the challenge and added the beverages into the menu. You can pick up this mod on her website!
With this new mod, you can add The Sims 4: Horse Ranch’s Nectar to the Dine Out Menu!
Compete in equestrian competitions for prestige and prize money!

Raising horses in The Sims 4 Horse Ranch can become a very profitable business if you’re willing to put the time and effort into training them for Sims 4 horse competitions. There are four different types of disciplines you and your horse can compete in at the Equestrian Centre, each with four division levels. Winning in the final division of all four competitions will allow you and your horse to compete in the Ultimate Horse Championship! Both horse and rider will need to have the skills it takes to bring home those award plaques and prize money. It’s a partnership, after all!
We’ll walk you through every competition and it’s entry requirements to help you go into the arena prepared!

Sims 4 Horse Competitions Guide
Training for Competitions
If you have an adult horse, you have a potential champion. Key word: potential. It will take a lot of work to train your horse to dominate the Sims 4 horse competitions. How do you do this? By working on your horse’s skills!
Horses have four skills and all four of them are directly tied to at least two out of the four competition disciplines. We have a more detailed guide on horse skills and how to build them here but here’s a quick breakdown.
The Jumping skill is tied to Show Jumping and Endurance Racing. Build this skill by practicing on horse jumps with your horse.
The Agility skill is tied to Barrel Racing and Western Pleasure. Build this skill by practicing on horse barrels with your horse.
The Endurance skill is tied to Endurance Racing and Barrel Racing. Build this skill by going on trail rides around the world with your horse.
The Temperament skill is tied to Show Jumping and Western Pleasure. Build this skill by simply interacting with your horse to build a bond with them.
All Horse Skills are tied to the Ultimate Horse Championship, so you’ll need a well-rounded horse who’s dominated all other competition divisions in order to qualify for this prestigious competition.
Your horse is not the only one who needs skills in order to do well in the Sims 4 horse competitions. Make sure you’re not neglecting your Sim’s Horse Riding skill. The Horse Riding skill is needed for all Sims 4 horse competitions. Luckily, it shouldn’t be too hard to build the Horse Riding skill if you’ve been working on Agility, Endurance, or Jumping skills with your horse. Anything you do on horseback builds the Horse Riding skill, so you can work on your own skill simultaneously while training your horse.
Entering Sims 4 Horse Competitions
The Equestrian Centre is located in the New Appaloosa neighbourhood of Chestnut Ridge and is open every day from 7am to 7pm. It is not its own lot type; it’s a rabbithole building located in the world’s common space so travel to the nearby park in order to visit it.
Sims can purchase, rescue, train, and sell horses at the Equestrian Centre and watch Sims 4 horse competitions as a spectator. They can also enter competitions themselves if they have an adult horse to compete with. Keep in mind that foals and pregnant mares cannot enter Sims 4 horse competitions. Horses are limited to competing only once per day but Sims can compete multiple times a day using different horses if they have more than one horse.
Don’t feel like traveling to the Equestrian Centre every time you want to enter a competition? No problem! You can also enter Sims 4 horse competitions through any community board in Chestnut Ridge. Community boards can also be purchased and placed on your lot if you live outside Chestnut Ridge.
Competition Divisions and Requirements
To start with, you and your horse will only be able to enter in the beginner division of any of the four main Sims 4 horse competitions. In order to qualify for the next division, you’ll have to place in the previous division. This means you will need to come in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in order to qualify for the next division up.
Each competition has its own entry fee, potential prize winnings, entry requirements, and recommended skill levels so we’re going to break them down for you.

Ultimate Horse Championship
The Ultimate Horse Championship only has one division. Think of it as the final showdown for the best of the best. In order to quality for the Ultimate Horse Championship, you and your horse will need to place in the Master division of all four Sims 4 horse competitions. This requires your horse to have nearly mastered every single skill so it’s no easy feat just to enter.
Entry Requirement: Place in Master division of all four equestrian disciplines
Entry Fee: $2,000
Prize Winnings:
1st: $6,000
2nd: $5,000
3rd: $4,000
Recommended Sim Skill: Horse Riding (10)
Recommended Horse Skills:

Endurance (10)
Jumping (10)
Temperament (10)
The entry fees and prize money are the same across all the Sims 4 horse competitions in their respective divisions so there’s no equestrian sport that’s more profitable than the others. All four sports are equally profitable so specialize in whichever one you find the most fun to do, or master them all to compete in the Ultimate Horse Championship.
Sims 4 Horse Competitions Rewards
In addition to prize money, your Sims will receive plaques and trophies to display in their home when they place in Sims 4 horse competitions. The plaques can be displayed on a ranch sign or on any wall.
There are bronze, silver, and gold plaques for each of the Sims 4 horse competitions at all division levels. If you win 1st place in the Beginner Show Jumping division and then place 1st again in the Intermediate Show Jumping division, you will receive the same gold Show Jumping plaque for both those wins.
From left to right: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place plaques for Show Jumping, Barrel Racing, Endurance Racing, and Western Pleasure.
The Ultimate Horse Championship rewards Sims with trophies if they place. There is a bronze, silver, and gold version of the trophy. You can see the Ultimate Horse Championship trophies below.

This build hack works on any debug item from any Sims 4 pack!
Why did The Sims team even make detailed, textured items that are purely decorative? I’m talking about all the Sims 4 Horse Ranch debug items hiding in the build & buy menu.
Note: To access these items, open the cheat bar by typing in Ctrl+Shift+C. Then enter bb.showhiddenobjects and bb.showliveditobjects consecutively. Close the cheat bar with Ctrl+Shift+C again, then search **DEBUG** in the build menu below. You can also filter by pack in the bottom right corner of the screen to easily find the above items.
Fret not, Simmers! This simple build hack is no secret to builders but read through this article to learn how to do it on different debug items.
Before you start, always ensure that the bb.moveobjects cheat is on. Let’s go!
The Sims 4 Horse Ranch Debug Items: Build Tips
1) Planter Boxes
Starting off strong with 3 different swatches of wooden and metal planters. Before placing these, grab the Base Game planter pot first and raise it 2 times with Ctrl+9. Plant the seed already before proceeding, or just download a fully grown plant from the gallery.
Build Hack with Plant Boxes
Create a basement right below where you placed the pot. Then choose any of these planters in the Horse Ranch debug. Place it in the basement and elevate the debug planter until its green grid reaches the top wall of the basement.
Check if the debug planter is aligned with the Base Game pot above. Once you’re okay with its placement, delete the basement room using the arrow sliders. Be careful not to just hit delete immediately or else the debug planter will be deleted with it.
Sims 4 Debug Planter Build Hack
And you’re done! You can create an organic and rustic garden with the variety of these debug planters.
Note: Planting the seed after adding the debug item won’t work so plant the seed already before adding any debug item.
2) Barrel Dining Table
Let’s turn your basic round tables more yeehaw-appropriate with these barrels! There are two swatches of these barrels available in debug but you could also use the actual items in the build menu for more swatches.
Debug barrelsNormal barrels in Build & Buy Menu
You can do this hack either with bar height tables or normal height tables. For bar height tables, simply overlap the debug barrel and the table set you’ll be using. Click on the bar stool and your Sims should be able to use it.
Same thing for normal height tables but size down the barrel 1 time by pressing ‘[‘ before overlapping it with the table set.
Note: It’s still better to do the basement room hack (see the part above) especially if you’re using the normal decorative barrels. There is sometimes still a routing issue when you just overlap these items.
3) Steel Bath Tub
We’ve never had a metal bath tub in the game so this is the closest we’ll get! First, place the normal tub from Horse Ranch. Build a basement directly below it. Then get this empty metal planter from debug and place it on the floor below.
The Sims 4 Bath Tub Build Hack
Elevate it with Ctrl+9 until it reaches the top of the basement floor. Add lighting below. The debug tub should align perfectly with the bathtub above!
4) Pitcher Pump Sink
If you’re really going for that rural country vibe in your bathroom, try using this old-timey water pump for a sink. Firstly, place this round base game sink on a counter and size it down with the ‘[‘ key.
Create a room below this. Place the water pump there and elevate with Ctrl+9 until it reaches the top of the room. From there, elevate it 10 times more to be as high as the countertop.
Even if it’s fully aligned with the sink, it doesn’t quite cover this hole on the countertop. Cover it by using a shelf sized up once with the ‘]’ key. Hold down Alt to place the shelf precisely just below the counter. You can cover the ends of the shelf with even more counters if you like.
To use in Live mode, just click on the jutting part of the sized-down sink and it works like charm.

Howdy, Simmers!
We hope you’re having yourself a rootin’ tootin’ good summer (or winter for our friends in the Southern Hemisphere)! The crew has been super excited for The Sims 4 Horse Ranch Expansion Pack finally to be out in the world and we have loved seeing y’all’s fantastic Horses and homesteads!
One teammate was telling us about a young stallion she had growing up named Starbuck. He was feisty and seemed a bit wild to some folks. However defiant Starbuck seemed to be, though, our teammate shared a special bond with him that was unmatched (despite him being more than happy to take an apple from anybody!). We hope you create your own special bonds with your Horses in the game!
We have a few ranch maintenance Sims 4 Update patch notes to share, so kick up your boots and settle in.

Bug Fixes
Sims 4 Update: Base Game Improvements
The female outfit with a foldover sweater now keeps its hands to itself when the camera is far away.
Circular Roofs once again have shingles that lay properly.
L-shaped stairs that are two or more tiles wide no longer have a misplaced triangular section on the side.
Floor and Ceiling Pattern names have been updated since they now apply to both. Try them out for Painted Ceilings if you have not already!
Lessons about camera controls now have images that include the updated “Free Camera.” If you haven’t tried it out yet, use it to check out Ceilings that you now can customize!
Growing Together Fixes
The “Screen Smarts” Moodlet that children get for watching the Brainchild Learning television channel now has text in all languages.
Horse Ranch Patch Notes
Live Mode
Dazed newborn Foals that are fed an Age-Up Treat now become adults who maintain their “Horseness” when going on rides so they don’t walk upright like Sims.
Sims occasionally were stuck staring into space while starting activities such as eating or cooking. It turns out this was a possible side effect of going home from another location via “Ride Home”. Well, no longer! Sims now can enjoy their post-ride meal.
Sims on Horseback who select a “Community Job” from the Ranch Community Board now remain mounted in most cases when heading to the Job.
For new games in Chestnut Ridge, Emily now only recommends affordable starter lots.
The Welcome Wagon no longer sometimes overstays its welcome because nothing says ‘Welcome to the Neighborhood’ like a bladder mishap on the porch.
“Ask About The Community” on a Chestnut Ridge resident now consistently shows the neighborhood Ranch Community Board when selecting “View Board.”
Horses that are uncomfortable now shake their head less frequently while trotting or cantering. To learn more about how a Horse is feeling, just hover the cursor over the Horse or ask an unhappy Horse “What’s Wrong?”
Horses move more naturally while walking, trotting, and cantering.
Horses running around for Fun now run in more direct paths and avoid running through Gates.
Horses now are less likely to loop through Gates.
When engaging camera auto-follow on the active Sim who is riding on a lot with walls set to “Medium” or “Tall,” the rider now remains firmly mounted instead of skyrocketing above the world. Sims are better off exploring worlds from the relative safety of the saddle!
Sims keep their hands on the reins when their Horse moves on his or her own.
Sims making Nectar no longer freeze up when another Sim uses certain greetings with them or when making jokes about Body Hair. It’s just a neighborly hello with jokes on hold until after the Nectar is made!
The Mysterious Rancher now pays the full amount of Simoleons when a Sim sells multiple bottles of Nectar at once.
Selecting “Hire a Ranch Hand” on a Ranch Community Board and then switching to a Child now shows the initial Sim’s phone interface after selecting “Call to Hire Ranch Hand.”
Horse Training options that the Sim cannot afford now have a tooltip that correctly states the Sim’s name.
Sims who are not Father Winter no longer travel to locations such as the Equestrian Center via fireplaces. Chimney transportation is reserved!
Sims now can enter only one Horse Competition at a time. This prevents Horses from sometimes getting confused and staying in the Equestrian Center.
Sims who lose an Elder Horse friend or acquaintance to death or who witness one passing now have a “Mourning Horse” Moodlet. Rest in peace, noble steed.
On Horse Jumps, “Practice Advanced Jumps” now kicks up dust from the ground properly when the Horse knocks off the top rail.
When selling many Mini Goats or Mini Sheep in rapid succession, the chance of one being left behind and i n v i s i b l e is lower now. If you encounter this, “Save” and “Reload” to resolve the issue.
Lots you can visit no longer have the “Place Animal…” interaction.
“Sniff” and “Nuzzle” interactions with Foals and Adult Horses no longer occasionally contort the Sim’s arms.
Manure/poop is more performant at the gameplay engine level. You heard that right – we “polished” this fertilizer powerhouse.
Horses in locked, enclosed spaces or who otherwise cannot get to the edge of the lot now can be sold successfully.
Build Mode
Rust’n Chic Table Lamp now can live a life independent of walls. It now slots onto the typical horizontal surfaces rather than snapping to walls.
Paddock Fencing and Sturdy Ranch Fencing now can be built with rounded corners.
Rancher’s Dream Window’s black design now is fully black.
Cormac Pine End Table’s white design now has a white swatch.
Create a Sim
Selecting a premade shape for a Horse’s head now preserves the Mane and Tail Color and any Feathers. Did you know in real life that the Arabian’s concave head profile is described as “dish”-shaped and muzzles (noses) with a convex profile are called a “Roman nose”?
Horses now are fully visible after undoing accessories while the “Coat Color & Pattern” section is still highlighted. No i n v i s i b l e Horses here!
Premade face shapes for Sims were missing for games that had Horse Ranch and not Werewolves. They’re back now!
“Plan Outfits” for Foals now includes Mane and Forelock selection.
Foals now have better framing in the Gallery. Who can resist that cute face??
The English riding outfit (ymBody_EP14RidingDressage_LogoBlueLt) now shows up with the “Feminine” filter.
The fringe jacket (yfTop_EP14JacketFringed_SolidBrown) now tucks into bottoms properly.
The “Jumpsuits” category for the “Masculine” filter no longer includes a few errant tops.
The “Boomtown Maverick” Styled Look no longer has two errant color swatches.

Now that we’ve looked at the interactions for The Sims 4 Horse Ranch Mini Animals, let’s have a look at what else you should keep in mind when having Mini Sheep and Goats on your Lot.
Caring For Your Mini Animals
While the interactions essentially covered the basics of how to look after your Mini Sheep and Goats, it’s vital that you Feed and Clean your small animals on a regular basis. This is also important as if you neglect their needs there is a chance they could run away.
If for whatever reason they do run away, there is a chance they could return at a later date once you’ve shown that you will meet their needs going forward.
Also, keep in mind that your Elder Mini Sheep and Goats will pass away due to old age. However, in your game settings, you can turn off animal ageing.
Simply head to Game Options > Gameplay > Animal Aging and select whether you want it on or off.
You can find the Care interactions via the pie menu on both Mini Sheep and Goats. You can also hover above the individual animals to see your current relationship with them as well as how their hunger, cleanliness and attention levels are.
Note:Both Mini Sheep and Goats can also be called to a feeder to eat. They will also eat bugs and weeds too.
Fun Things to do with your Mini Animals
Travel the World
Once you’ve got the basics down, it’s now time to have some fun. The great thing about The Sims 4 Horse Ranch Mini Animals is that you can take them anywhere.
Want to go to the local bar and cause chaos? Why not? Simply place them back into your inventory, travel to your chosen lot and place them in the world. While it might not be complete chaos, having some fun with these adorable animals will certainly put smiles on your Sim’s faces!
If you do take them out and about on adventures and you accidentally leave them on a lot. They will eventually return to you and can be found in your Sim’s inventory.
Ranch Events
Boom clap, boom de clap de clap!
Are your Sims ready to host some new Ranch Events? Why not host your own Ranch Gathering, dance the cowpoke, listen to some Ranch Music, sample some Nectar, grill some good food and have fun with others from Chestnut Ridge?
On the other hand, why not show some love to your Sims 4 Horse Ranch Mini Animal friends or even your Horses and celebrate Ranch Animal Day?
That’s not a Mini Sheep or Goat, is it?
A fun feature we found while writing this guide was you can in fact have giant, functional Mini Sheep and Goats.
No, we aren’t kidding around!
Simply head into Build Mode, select any Mini Sheep or Goat on your Lot and you can enlarge it the same way you would with any normal Build Buy object.
To do this you can press Shift + [ or Shift + ] to resize them! You will also need to ensure you have bb.moveobjects on enabled too.
100 Mini Sheep and Goat Challenge?
There seems to be no limit on just how many Mini Sheep and Goats you can have on a lot at any one time. It does make you wonder just how many you could place at any one time before potentially crashing your game.
Only one way to find out of course!
All in all, The Sims 4 Horse Ranch Mini Animals are a wonderful addition to the game and bring a new level of cute and cuddly gameplay for Simmers and the occasional chaos too!

The Sims 4 Story Starter Kit: Taming the Wild
If you asked River what his childhood was like, he would talk at length about how he had the most amazing childhood any kid could ask for. He’d tell you all about his parents’ successful horse ranch where they bred, sold, and competed with some of the world’s finest competition horses. He’d tell you that his mom and dad both instilled their immense love and respect for horses in him from a very young age; especially his mom.
Lyla Hawthorne was a world-renowned horsewoman with hundreds of first place plaques to her name. Everyone thought she was unbeatable… until a devastating accident during a high stakes barrel racing competition took her life. After that, nothing was the same anymore…
Her grieving husband struggled with her death even more than her heartbroken son. He blamed her death on the horses and lost any love he once had for the majestic animals. In fact, he hated them. Unable to stomach the sight of a horse any longer, he sold their sprawling 100 acre horse farm and downsized to a smaller plot where he hoped to transition from raising horses to raising miniature sheep and goats.
The move devastated River. He was furious with his father for throwing away everything his mother had worked for. He felt they should be honouring her memory by keeping her love of horses alive, not abandoning it! He rebelled by skipping school to spend his days in Galloping Gulch, watching the herds of wild horses run free and wishing he could join them.
On one of his excursions, he noticed a wild mustang on her own, away from her herd. She had gotten her leg stuck in a hunter’s trap meant for coyotes. Knowing the mare needed urgent medical care and that she wouldn’t survive out in the desert without her herd and an injured leg, he quickly ran back home to grab some rope he could lasso her with and get her back to the farm. Unsurprisingly, the wild horse did not appreciate being handled by a human and fought him the entire way home.
When Thaddeus realised what his son had done, he was beside himself with rage. He told River he should have let nature take its course and left the horse for dead. He forbade River from going anywhere near her and started making calls to find a vet that would come and euthanize the injured animal.
Against his father’s wishes, River tended to the mare’s wounds himself, whom he named Fox Trot. By the time a vet did get out there, they deemed Fox Trot perfectly healthy and would not euthanize her, so Thaddeus was stuck with her. River pleaded with his father to give him a chance to tame the aggressive, defiant, and free-spirited horse but all Thaddeus could think about was losing his only child the same way he lost his wife. He made it clear that River was not to go within 100 feet of Fox Trot and that he would find a rancher who would take her off their hands.
But the fighting spirit Lyla passed down to her son was strong and River has now taken it upon himself to try and prove to his father that Fox Trot is not a lost cause; with enough love and patience, she could be a champion, just like their old horses. Just like mom.
Fox Trot isn’t going to make it easy, however. She seems just as determined to fight River and every other human as River is to show his dad she’s tameable. Can River turn Fox Trot into the trusting, gentle, championship horse he believes she can be or is Fox Trot truly a lost cause like Thaddeus insists?
This Sims 4 Story Starter Kit household should be able to purchase their lot with their default starting funds. Make sure you import the family into CAS, then move them in. If you move them into a home straight from the Gallery, they will not have the funds I set for them.
This humble The Sims 4 Story Starter Kit home with 2 bedrooms, a paddock, and small stable isn’t much space to run a big ranching operation but might be suitable for a herd of miniature sheep and goats. Still, if one did decide to keep a horse here, they might be able to squeeze one into the one stall in the barn and set up some makeshift training equipment in the paddock…

Remember that bridge your horses can’t go to? Fixed it.
It’s no secret that the SimGurus LOVE making the best debug items for every new pack. Just look at the new debug menu from The Sims 4 Horse Ranch, especially this covered bridge you’ll see often in the world of Chestnut Ridge. The catch? Sims can’t use them. Bummer. But what if we turn these debug shells into functional stables?
Horses aren’t even allowed to go here!
With this workaround, you can even use them in your builds! Whether you want to save Simoleons, do the no walls challenge, or just add something interesting to your lot, simply follow any of these build hacks.
Note: Before doing anything, make sure that bb.moveobjects is on.
Table of Contents
Hack #1: Using a Basement
First of all, we have to access the hidden debug menu. Type in Ctrl+Shift+C to open the cheat bar. Then, type and enter bb.showhiddenobjects and bb.showliveeditobjects consecutively. Hit Ctrl+Shift+C again to close the cheat bar.
Go to the items search bar and type in **DEBUG** to open the debug menu. To make the search easier, toggle the filter for Horse Ranch expansion pack and look for this item.
Tip: In case you make mistakes or start over again, already grab duplicates of the debug item since it cannot be duplicated with the eyedropper tool.
Great! Now that we have this thing, build a room just as big as the item. Adjust the level of the whole room by clicking on it and sliding up the white arrow 1 time.
Then, remove the walls either by clicking on each wall and selecting Remove Wall or using the sledgehammer tool.
Now to the important step: build a basement directly below this room. Place the debug item on the floor below. With Ctrl+9, elevate the item several times until it reaches the top floor again while it’s placed on the basement. You may need a few adjustments before it’s level with the above floor.
Once you’re satisfied with the item’s placement, delete the room below by sliding the white arrows to minimize the room. DON’T just click on the room and hit delete! We don’t want the debug object to be deleted with it.
Go back to the upper floor and viola! That entire space is functional. You can fit in 2 sets of hay beds and feeders here without any trouble.
Hack #2: Using a Second Floor
If you don’t like the adding a basement to your lot, try making a 2nd floor. Do this by creating a 1-tile room on the 1st floor then adding another room on top of it.
Delete the room on the 1st floor. Using the white arrow slider in the middle, drag the entire room downwards until it is levelled with the floor of the debug item.
When you’re satisfied with its height, use the white arrows around the room to resize it to be as big as the debug item. Like above, remove all four walls of the room.
Note: If you want to adjust the debug item, make sure that it’s placed on the ground floor and NOT on the 2nd floor so the space can still be functional.
The last step is to add stairs on either end. Since this hack uses stairs (which aren’t accessible for horses), it’s best to convert this space intended for Sims like a restaurant or a bar to dance the cowpoke.
Extra Hack: Other Debug Items
If you’ve read the previous sections, you’ll observe that the key here is to add the debug item on a different floor or else the space won’t be usable. Simple enough, right? So try it on other objects from debug…or even this sized up dollhouse barn if you ever want that.
Don’t worry about rain or roofing problems! When you create a room, it automatically adds a ceiling to cover the room. If you also own Seasons, do note that this room is like a porch and is still outdoors.

Breed adorable foals as a hobby or as a lucrative business!
One of the biggest features of the new Horse Ranch expansion is Sims 4 horse breeding! Sims can make a very good living breeding and selling trained competition horses with impressive pedigrees. In fact, horse sales are such a big focus that all horses have a monetary value attached to them that increases based on skills, certain traits, and competition wins. Breeding your champion horses and selling their highly valuable offspring will make your Sims wealthy in no time!
We’ll walk you through everything you need to know about breeding top quality horses!
Table of Contents
Sims 4 Horse Breeding Guide
There’s a lot to think about when breeding horses, especially if you’re breeding for profit. You’ll need to take into account the dam and sire’s traits, skills, and competition history when pairing up horses for breeding in order to get more valuable foals. Read on to learn how to be a successful horse breeder!
Mating a Mare and a Stallion
In order to start Sims 4 horse breeding, you first need a mare and a stallion. Click on either your mare or stallion and under Friendly interactions, select Encourage To > Encourage to Breed With and select the other horse.
If the breeding is successful, you’ll see them touch their muzzles and hearts swirl around them. Don’t be discouraged if your horses don’t breed on the first try; just keep building your bond with both horses and give them more time to get to know each other. Horses are highly social animals and will autonomously interact with each other often.
After a successful Sims 4 horse breeding attempt, it will take several in-game hours before you’ll know if your mare is expecting a foal or not. If she is pregnant, you’ll get a notification about it.
Pregnant Mares
A pregnant mare
While your mare is pregnant, you won’t be able to ride her or train with her on jumps or barrels. She also won’t be eligible to enter any equestrian competitions. Make sure she’s comfortable and happy during her pregnancy by brushing her, interacting with her, keeping her feed bin full and her stall clean like you would normally do.
Mares are pregnant for about three in-game days. You’ll see her belly slowly expand over those three days as her foal grows. Sometime on day three, your mare will go into labour. Just like with Sim labours, this process can take a few hours. Your mare will be very uncomfortable while she’s in labour but your Sim can help soothe her. There is a new social interaction on your mare during labour called Soothe Horse in Labour.
When your mare gives birth, her foal will appear beside her and you’ll be prompted to give the new colt or filly a name! The foal will inherit one random trait from its dam and one from its sire. It will also possess a third base trait of its own. This is why taking your horses’ traits into account for Sims 4 horse breeding is important if you want a good chance of getting foals with a specific type of personality!
As for the foal’s appearance, its body shape and coat colouring appear to be 50/50. Our filly had her dam’s coat colouring and her sire’s body build. There was no mixing of coat colours or patterns.
Foal Care
Foals are adorably clumsy and unsteady on their hooves when they’re first born but they actually aren’t a lot of work to keep healthy and happy. They get a lot of care from their dam, who nurses and grooms them to keep them fed and clean but Sims can also bottle feed and brush their foals. Foals can be trained to eat hay by hand-feeding them prairie grass or calling them to eat from a patch of prairie grass or a feed bin.
A filly nursing from her dam
However, this doesn’t mean you can neglect your foal! Foals need to learn how to interact with Sims and the earlier you start working on their Temperament skill with them, the better. A big part of Sims 4 horse breeding is making sure your foals grow into adult horses with the Well Mannered Foal trait. A foal only gains this reward trait when they age up if they have high Temperament skill. This trait is highly coveted for breeders because it gives the horse a boost in all skills.
Foals cannot be ridden or enter equestrian competitions. You’ll have to wait for them to grow up to start building the Agility, Jumping, and Endurance skills with them. You can see how many days away your foal is from aging up by hovering over their portrait in your Sim’s relationship panel.
Breedable Traits
If you’re going to be delving into Sims 4 horse breeding for profit, you’ll need a good understanding of how to breed certain traits into your foals to increase their value. The benefit of Sims 4 horse breeding is that there are certain traits a horse can only get by being bred and raised from a foal.
In addition to their three base traits they’ll get when they’re born (which is partially influenced by their dam and sire’s base traits), foals can be born with additional traits called breedable traits. Breedable traits are traits that can only be acquired through Sims 4 horse breeding. Check out our Horse Traits Guide for a full breakdown of all horse traits, but here’s a summary of breedable traits.
Playful: Foals can sometimes be born with the Playful trait, which means they love to play with toys and Sims.
Curious: Foals can sometimes be born with the Curious trait, which makes them more likely to investigate many different objects. They’ll also love using jumps and barrels when they grow up.
Champion Genes: You’ll only breed foals with Champion Genes if their dam or sire has the Champion Horse trait. Gain the Champion Horse trait by winning 20 equestrian competitions in order to start breeding foals with Champion Genes. Both traits greatly increase the horse’s value and boost all skill gain.
Well Mannered Foal: Foals are not born with this trait but they can age up with this trait if your Sim spent a lot of time building their Temperament skill as a foal. This trait boosts all skill gain.
Horse Value
Players who really want to get into Sims 4 horse breeding as a lucrative business will need to understand how to increase the value of their horses. The horse value system is quite detailed so this portion of our guide may undergo further changes as we learn more about it but here’s what we’ve gathered about horse value so far!
Horses start with a base value of $1,000. This base value increases based on certain factors. If you want to make the most of Sims 4 horse breeding, you’ll want to increase that base value as much as possible so you can sell the horses you breed at a higher profit. You accomplish this by being selective about the horses you choose to breed together.
Ideally, these are the factors you want to consider heavily with Sims 4 horse breeding:
Pick a dam and a sire with traits that are favourable for competitions to increase your odds of getting a foal with those same traits. Having good base traits will help them build certain skills faster and do better in competitions.
If possible, don’t breed horses that do not have the Champion Horse trait. You only want to be breeding the best of the best to get quality foals with the Champion Genes trait. These traits have a direct impact on a horse’s monetary value.
The more competitions your horses have won, the more valuable they become (and by extension, the more valuable their foals will be). So don’t retire your horses after 20 competitions to get the Champion Horse trait. Continuing to win competitions seems to further drive up the value of the horse.
You can sell foals but we don’t recommend doing this. You’ll fetch a higher price if you raise your foal to an adult and get some competition wins on their record, first.
In short, highly skilled horses with lots of competition wins and good traits will have more valuable foals!
Sims 4 horse breeding can really make your Sims obscenely wealthy. The most valuable premade horse in the game is Duke Gooseman, valued at $17,400 but we’ve seen some players’ horses valued for up to a whopping $45,000!

Your horse’s competition wins will be displayed in the competition wins section of their profile rather than their Sims 4 horse traits section.

We will take you through everything you need to know about these two features in the expansion. First up, let’s take a look at the Community Board!
Table of Contents
The Sims 4 Horse Ranch Community Board Overview
This is a feature we’ve seen featured within various packs in different ways over The Sims 4’s lifetime. Each iteration in a slightly different way and The Sims 4 Horse Ranch Community Boards are no exception.
Where Can I Find the Community Boards?
You can find the Community Boards dotted around Chestnut Ridge. In fact, there are three in total your Sims can use.
New Appaloosa – Located just outside of the Hay Now! Equestrian Centre and Duke’s Hall Lots
Rider’s Glen – Located near the Sweet Nectar Glade Lot
Galloping Gulch – Located at the bottom of the hill near the Canyon Crossing lot
Community Board Features
Now, the community board comes with a range of different features. At first glance, it can seem a little overwhelming but in actual fact, the Sims 4 Horse Ranch Community Boards are incredibly easy to navigate.
Overall, there are eight different features that you can choose from when your Sim interacts with any of the three community boards in the game.
Here’s a closer look at what you can find on the Community Boards!
Call Ranch Animal Exchange
By calling the Ranch Animal Exchange, your Sims will be able to Purchase a Horse for $1000, Rescue a Horse for $250 or purchase a Mini Sheep or Mini Goat in numerous colours and quantities.
Ranch Animal Info
Here you will find quick helpful pop-ups relating to the Equestrian Centre, Horse Care and Mini Animal Care.
Community Jobs
Looking for some quick and easy Simoleons? Then why not take a look at Community Jobs?
Choose from a range of different jobs from Training a Neighbour’s Horse to Sheep Grazing and more to earn some extra money. On average. community jobs will take your Sims four hours to complete and the overall payout will depend on your Sims skill level.
Upon selecting the community job, your Sim will go ahead and complete it. You will not be able to interact with your Sim during this time and once complete, you’ll find all the details of how they got on in the notifications panel.
Enter Competition
Much like how you enter a competition at the Hay Now! Equestrian Centre, entering via the Community Board is just another way to do so.
Hire Ranch Hand
Looking after and running a ranch is hard work. However, you don’t have to do it on your own. Why not hire a Ranch Hand to help you with the day-to-day running of your ranch? Simply select the option from the Community Board menu and you’ll be set!
Horse Training
Similar to using the Community Board to enter competitions, this is another quick and easy way to access the trainer options for your Horses.
Learn About Residents
Get to know the residents of Chestnut Ridge or more specifically the most knowledgeable when it comes to living on the Ranch and making Nectar.
Plan a Ranch Event
Finally, why not hold a Ranch Event?
Choose from either Ranch Gathering or Ranch Animal Day and get ready to hold the hottest event Chestnut Ridge has seen!
Simply select the Plan Ranch Event button at the bottom of the pop-up and you’ll be taken to your Household Calendar where you can plan either of the two events as normal from there!
Can the Community Board do anything else?
Ultimately, other than finding them located throughout Chestnut Ridge, you can also find them in the Build Buy Catolouge! This is perfect for if you are building your own ranch-inspired lots around the world and a nice touch to add in.
It’s Time to Explore Chestnut Ridge!
Now that you’ve had time to check out the Sims 4 Horse Ranch Community Board, it’s time to get out there and fully experience living in the beautiful world of Chestnut Ridge and get to know the community!
Whether you want to become an Expert Nectar Maker, a Championship Rider or just enjoying time with your family, Chestnut Ridge has plenty to offer for all kinds of Sims.

How do you get champion horses? By building Sims 4 horse skills! In The Sims 4 Horse Ranch, horses have four major skills; Temperament, Agility, Jumping, and Endurance. Each of these skills is linked to the equestrian competitions that take place at the Equestrian Centre in the New Appaloosa neighbourhood of Chestnut Ridge. Train your horse to specialize in a single discipline or work on all skills to create a well-rounded, multi-talented horse that can take the whole show circuit by storm! Mastering any of these skills comes with rewards and benefits.

The Sims 4 Horse Skills Guide
Building your horse’s skills is key to success both on the ranch and at the equestrian centre! Read on to learn about all the benefits of training Sims 4 horse skills!
Keeping Track of Sims 4 Horse Skills
Since horses are not controllable, you won’t be able to click on them to view their skills in the info panels like you can with Sims, but don’t worry! You can still keep track of your horse’s skill progress. Just click on your horse in your Sim’s relationship panel and view their profile. Your horse’s profile will display all their basic information, like their traits and monetary value. It also displays their skill information and their competition history.
Temperament Skill
The Temperament skill is the most important skill for any horse to have, whether they’re just a family pet used for trail riding or a highly-trained competition horse. Temperament dictates how well your horse behaves for their riders, as well as how they behave when interacting with both Sims and other animals. It is also a required skill for the Show Jumping and Western Pleasure competitions.
Horses with high Temperament skill are less likely to buck riders off their backs and more likely to have positive interactions with both Sims and animals. This makes it a great skill for horses with traits like Defiant and Aggressive to build because their Temperament skill can help balance out bad behaviour from those traits.
To build this skill, simply spend time interacting with your horse or pay a fee to send your horse for training through the community board. Both foals and adult horses can build the Temperament skill. If you have a foal, it’s best to work on their Temperament skill as much as you can before they grow up. Foals with high Temperament skill grow up with the Well-Mannered Foal reward trait which gives them a skill boost in all the other skills.

While Don doesn’t have any family in Chestnut Ridge, he appears to be a long time family friend of the Grove family. He is friends with both Sienna and her brother, Umber, and his household bio states that he was their mother’s riding mentor.
The Grove Household

Household Description
Umber and Juniper became childhood sweethearts when Umber would serenade Juniper with odes to her Equestrian prowess after taking Horse Riding lessons from his mother. When Umber’s parents passed away, he took on the family ranch to honor his native heritage and his sister, Sienna, became the Horse Trainer in town. The son, Wren, has a passion for animals and is training Starbrite, the foal of Umber’s childhood rescue horse, Luna… all set to the sweet, peaceful soundtrack of Umber’s odes on the porch.

Sims 4 Horse Ranch Premades: Household Notes:
These Sims 4 Horse Ranch premades live on the Biscuit’s Bastion lot in the Riders’ Glen neighbourhood of Chestnut Ridge.
Luna is the dam (mother) of Starbrite. However, Starbrite does not appear to have a sire (father). Neither Duke nor Flapjack are her sire, which are the only two premade stallions in Chestnut Ridge.
Umber and Sienna’s parents seem to have passed recently because the siblings have a grief-related sentiment, which implies that they are still actively grieving for their parents.
While it’s not immediately clear why Wren and Marissa dislike each other, their sentiments suggest that Wren did something to Marissa he feels guilty about. He may want to try and make it up to her.
Juniper is best friends with her sister-in-law, Sienna.

Sims 4 Horse Ranch Premades: Household Notes:
Roberto is a special NPC in the Horse Ranch expansion. He does not live in a home in the world and he doesn’t appear in the Household Management menu. He can only be played through using debug cheats to add him to your household.
Roberto’s main function as an NPC is to purchase nectar from your Sims at a premium rate. He will periodically show up in the New Appaloosa neighbourhood of Chestnut Ridge and offer to buy any nectar your Sims want to sell at a higher than usual price.
Roberto seems to be quite the popular fellow in Chestnut Ridge. He’s friends with everyone in town except for Don Gooseman, whom he doesn’t know, and Dani Davila, whom he dislikes. His dislike of Dani is odd considering they are supposedly as passionate about nectar as he is. Perhaps he sees them as competition?

The Sims 4 Horse Ranch Secret Cave: Everything You Need to Know!
While there are no in-game requirements for making sure your Sims are prepared to explore the secret cave, there’s no harm in having a bit of fun and getting your Sim ready in an exploration-ready outfit!
Now that you are prepared, grab your horse (or any other animal or Sim you wish) and let us set off on our journey!
It’s also important to note that The Sims 4 Horse Ranch Secret Cave actually has a proper name which is in fact Dreadhorse Caverns.
Essentially, you will be guiding your Sim through a text-based mini-game which you could say is inspired by Dungeons & Dragons! Making your way through multiple levels over time facing off a variety of enemies and obstacles along your way.
Where do I find Dreadhorse Caverns?
As previously mentioned, the secret cave can be located in the Galloping Gulch neighbourhood of Chestnut Ridge.
More specifically, you’ll be looking to venture to a lower part of the neighbourhood.
You can get a better idea as to the location of Dreadhorse Cavern by heading over to the bridge just to the left of the Canyon Crossing lot.
Once you have spotted the secret cave it’s time to make your way down to the entrance. To make the journey even easier, you can task your Sim with the journey to the entrance from the bridge beforehand.
Approaching Dreadhorse Cavern
Whilst on your journey to Dreadhorse Cave’s entrance, you’ll be captivated by all the gorgeous views and little details around the world. However, try not to focus on it too much as you’ll soon be finding yourself face-to-face with the entrance to the Sims 4 Horse Ranch Secret Cave!
The Mysterious Cavern Entrance
Now, that you have sent your Sim into the mysterious Dreadhorse Cavern, you might be wondering what happens next.
If you hover over the cave when telling your Sim to explore the cave, you’ll notice a small pop-up appear. This will tell you the Cave Level as well as your Cave Progress.
Cave progress is measured out of one hundred and there are a number of different levels to work through each with varying difficulty.
Without further ado, let’s enter Dreadhorse Cavern!
Dreadhorse Cavern: What to Expect
With your Sim now exploring Dreadhorse Cavern, who knows what or who you might encounter?
While you don’t directly enter The Sims 4 Horse Ranch Secret Cave with your Sim, you will instead be presented with a variety of pop-ups.
There are a range of different ‘enemies’ that you may come across while exploring Dreadhorse Cavern. These can range from Bears, Rapping Skeletons and Spiders.
Here’s an example of one of the encounter pop-ups. It’s important to keep an eye on your Sim’s health as that can determine the action that you take.
Your Sim will need to defeat each enemy before it allows you to progress. Don’t forget you can heal during the process if needs be before you try to cause damage again. Sometimes, choosing the defensive option will actually allow you to progress further too!
With each successful encounter, you’ll make progress further into The Sims 4 Horse Ranch Secret Cave. Progress is measured in 25% chunks.
However, if you are unsuccessful, your Sim will not be able to delve deeper into Dreadhorse Caver. It’s also important to note that your Sims may also back out of the cave as they have done as much exploring as they wish to do that time around.
If your Sim does decide they’ve had enough or they’ve run out of health (don’t worry they won’t actually die), they will leave the cave and will need some time and then return to Dreadhorse Cavern at a later time.
Upon exit of this Sims 4 Horse Ranch Secret Cave, your Sim will have a Dazed Buff.
The Great Dreadhorse Escape: ‘Sim Name’ braved the Dreadhorse Caverns and lived to tell the tale!
This buff is obtained from Exploring the Dreadhorse Caverns and lasts eight hours.
Ahh, but wait there’s more!
And you thought that it was just the random battle encounters your Sims had to work through. Alas, there’s more.
As you progress through the different levels of Dreadhorse Cavern, you’ll be presented with some slightly trickier encounter pop-ups and enemies. Your Sim will from time to time be required to have specific objects within their inventory to progress. If they don’t have the specific item, you’ll leave the cave to essentially find the item ready for the next time you return.
The items you’ll need are all either part of The Sims 4 Horse Ranch or Base Game and should be easy for your Sim to obtain. Most you can find around your Sim’s home or at the local General Store. All you need to do is make sure they are in your inventory after you have found them/purchased them.
Take a look at this example encounter pop-up!
Of course, there are more than just the odd (possibly chaotic) goose blocking your way that your Sim could come across. You may even run into a Mysterious Challenger amongst other obstacles during your time in the Cave.
Cavern Rewards
Throughout your time in The Sims 4 Horse Ranch Secret Cave, your Sim will collect a variety of different objects. These could be gnomes, woodwork sculptures, and fruit and vegetables to name a few. Your Sim may also come across some incredibly rare items and Simoleons too!
As well as the items you’ll find throughout the Dreadhorse Cavern, from time to time your Sim will stumble upon a treasure chest that they can decide to open or leave. Again opening it will give your Sim a chance at receiving a reward.
Better still, once you’ve finished exploring Dreadhorse Cavern, you can always sell your wares for a few extra Simoleons. The more you explore, the more you’ll discover and more you can potentially earn!
