The Sims 4: Complete Guide to Laundry

The Sims 4: Complete Guide to Laundry

You might think “What’s there to know about doing laundry? You throw the clothes in the washer, then the dryer, then you put them away.” While that boring description of this common house chore might be true in real life, doing laundry in The Sims 4 has never been more fun. Doing laundry can have many different outcomes, both positive and negative. With all the fragrance, cleanliness, and dampness combinations and multiple ways to do laundry, it’s handy to consult a quick guide before diving in. Let’s wash some clothes!

Laundry Equipment

For the first time ever, your Sims can choose to do their laundry the modern way or the old fashioned way. Laundry Day Stuff comes with a washer, dryer, wash tub, and clothesline. Your Sims can choose any combination of these new gameplay items to get their clothes clean and dry. The washer and dryer are both front-loading. They can be stacked on top of each other or placed side-by-side. Both the washer and dryer can be upgraded to improve the quality of the clothing in various ways and to reduce the chance of the machines breaking down.

The new hampers keep your Sims’ clothes contained in one place. When Sims change their outfit, their dirty clothes will be added to the hamper. The hamper does not need to be in the same room as your Sim. Clothes will be added to the hamper no matter where it is on the lot. Slob Sims will leave their dirty clothes on the floor even when there is a hamper on the lot. Eventually, laundry hampers fill up and more clothes cannot be added to it until the clothes in the hamper are removed. It’s ideal to have one hamper per Sim in your household. This will ensure your Sims won’t need to do laundry more than once a week in-game.

Clothing

Clothing piles have varying states of cleanliness, dryness and fragrance. The state of your Sims’ clothes is dependent on a variety of factors. Sims who change outfits with low hygiene will leave dirty clothes and Sims who have just gone swimming in a pool will leave wet clothing when they change outfits. Laundry additives make clothes smell either fragrant or foul.

Cleanliness: Pristine > Clean > Used > Dirty > Filthy
Dryness: Dry & Warm > Dry > Damp > Soaked
Fragrance: Fragrant > No Fragrance > Foul

Each clothing pile can have any combination of these three attributes at the same time. Wearing clothes with positive states will give your Sims positive emotional buffs, while wearing clothes with negative states will slap them with negative emotional buffs and put them in a bad mood. Upgrading the washer and dryer will help your clothes come out dry and pristine more often.

The Sims 4: Complete Guide to Laundry
A folded pile of clean clothes. The butterflies around it indicate that it is fragrant.

Clothes can be folded or unfolded. When a clothing pile is discarded by changing outfits, it will appear unfolded either on the floor or in the hamper. When clothes are removed from either the dryer or clothesline, they will be folded.

Clothes left out for too long will decay in quality. Clothes will also decay in quality if they’ve been left for too long in the washer, wash tub, dryer, or on the clothesline. Folded clothes that are not put away will deteriorate into unfolded clothes. The cleanliness, dryness, and fragrance states of the clothes will also decay over time. It’s best to wash, dry, and put away your clothes as soon as they are ready to avoid this decay.

Your Sims can Search Pockets on clothing piles to find simoleons and small objects.

Washing Your Clothes

Select a hamper with clothes in it and select Do Laundry, then choose Add to Washing Machine or Wash in Wash Tub. Hampers do not need to be full to do laundry, but they can’t be empty. Your Sim will pick up all clothes on the lot and take them to the wash tub or washer.

Select Wash Clothes on the washer or wash tub. Washing clothes with the wash tub takes up more of your Sim’s time. They can’t press a button and go do something else until the wash cycle is finished; they must wash by hand at the tub. The advantage to washing clothes by hand is the small amount of Fitness skill your Sim will gain by scrubbing the clothes in the tub. It’s best to use the wash tub outside because it leaves a lot of water on the ground.

Your Sim can watch the wash cycle in the washer but this has a chance of making them dizzy. When the washer finishes its cycle, it will chime. A high chime indicates a positive outcome. A low chime indicates a negative outcome.

When your Sim finishes washing clothes in the wash tub, select the wash tub to choose to move the clothes to the dryer or clothesline. The water in the tub gets dirty after washing a load of laundry in it. Your Sim will need to drain the tub and replace the water.

Drying Your Clothes

Clothes can only be dried if they are damp or soaked. Clothes can get damp from being washed or by being worn in a pool.

You can dry damp or soaked clothing on the clothesline or in the dryer. Drying your clothes in the dryer is much faster than hanging them on a clothesline. Click on the damp clothing pile or a full washer or wash tub and select Unload & Move Laundry, then choose either the dryer or clothesline.

Before starting the dryer, click on it and choose Clean Lint Trap if the option is there. Drying clothes with a full lint trap is very likely to start a fire. The dryer is so prone to causing fires that it’s best to clean the lint trap before every load. If the lint trap has been cleaned out, select Dry Laundry. Like the washer, the dryer will chime when it’s finished. A high chime indicates a positive result. A low chime indicates a negative result. Sims can also watch the dryer at the risk of becoming dizzy.

The clothesline takes much longer to dry clothes, but it’s hassle-free. Simply hang your clothes up and wait about 12 hours in-game for the open air to dry your laundry.

Putting Away the Laundry

Unlike real life, the easiest part of laundry in The Sims 4 is putting it away. When your clothes are dry, you can choose to unload them and put them away or put them down somewhere. Generally, you’ll want to put them away immediately to avoid clothing decay. If you opt to unload and put away, your Sim will take the clothes from the dryer or clothesline and toss them into the air where they will magically disappear into your Sims’ dressers and closets, ready to be worn the next time they change their outfit.

The Sims 4: Complete Guide to Laundry

Depending on the quality of the clothes your Sims have put away, your Sims can get a variety of positive, neutral, or negative buffs the next time they change their outfit. Your Sims will continue to get these clothing buffs every time they change for the next three in-game days after doing laundry.

Upgrades

The washer and dryer have several upgrades Sims can give them to improve the quality of clothing.

Washer & Dryer

Whisper Quiet

Requirements: Handiness 6, 1 common upgrade part, 1 plumbing upgrade part, 1 electrical upgrade part
Description: This upgrade makes the washer and dryer much quieter when they are turned on.

Speed Cycle

Requirements: Handiness 7, 2 common upgrade parts, 1 plumbing upgrade part, 1 electrical upgrade part
Description: This upgrade makes your clothes wash and dry faster.

Tungsten Drum

Requirements: Handiness 8, 2 plumbing upgrade parts, 2 electrical upgrade parts
Description: This upgrade makes the washer and dryer less likely to break.

Washer Only

Presoak

Requirements: Handiness 5, 1 common upgrade part, 2 plumbing upgrade parts
Description: The presoak upgrade makes your clothes wash a little slower, but increases the chance of the clothing being pristine.

Laundry Additive Tray

Requirements: Handiness 6, 1 common upgrade part, 3 kitchen upgrade parts
Description: With this upgrade, you can add flowers to the washer to make the clothes come out smelling fragrant or you can add food to make the clothes smell foul. Flowers and food can be added to the wash tub without an upgrade. You must have the flowers and food in your inventory to add them to a load of laundry. Sims with level 4 Mischief skill can add soap to break the washer if this upgrade is installed.

Dryer Only

Lint-Less

Requirements: Handiness 5, 1 common upgrade part, 1 electrical upgrade part, 2 kitchen upgrade parts
Description: The dryer will no longer produce lint. This will make your clothes dry faster and eliminate the risk of starting a fire.

Add-On Pack Compatibility

Laundry Day Stuff can of course be used with any and all other packs for The Sims 4, but the Sims Team has integrated Laundry Day Stuff with a few other packs. You do not need any of these packs to play The Sims 4: Laundry Day Stuff, but you will notice some nice extra touches here and there while using Laundry Day Stuff if you do own any of the following packs:

Cats & Dogs

Cats will jump up onto washers and dryers and play with the dripping water from the clothesline.

Parenthood

Children will build the Responsibility character value from doing laundry.

Vintage Glamour

Butlers will wash and dry the laundry, but will not put clean laundry away. Your Sims will still have to put their own clothes away after the butler has done the laundry.

What About Laundromats?

There is no laundromat lot type in The Sims 4: Laundry Day Stuff, but you can still place washers and dryers on community lots and send your Sims there to do their laundry if they have clothes in their inventory. The washers and dryers also come with one swatch that has a coin slot to give them a laundromat feel.

The Sims 4 Laundry Day Stuff Review

The entire community knew about the thirteenth Stuff Pack for The Sims 4 for months and not only did we get a behind the scenes on the making of this pack but we also helped create it by voting on various community polls. Did The Sims Team and the community make The Sims 4 Laundry Day a Stuff Pack worth the $9.99 price? Find out in this review!

Game Review Standards

This review is based on 5+ hours of gameplay.  Even though I was given an early review copy by EA to test the game, I am not by any means paid or bribed to state positive (or negative) opinions about this stuff pack.  I will give my honest opinion of the stuff pack; its content and what it brings to the game.

Create A Sim

Although Create A Sim isn’t Laundry Day’s main focus it still has a few tricks up in its sleeve with country-themed clothing items that are full of cute floral details and other peculiar patterns.

In total there are 20 new items for feminine and masculine fashion choices. However, it seems that The Sims Team is bringing up its old mistakes by making a drastic difference between the amount of new clothing for masculine and feminine Sims. The ratio of new items this time around is 4:2 with feminine fashion choice taking the lead.

For a full overview of Create A Sim items check out this post!

Build Items

With 49 new items The Sims 4 Laundry Day’s crown jewel is definitely the build items catalogue. Even without the objects that add unique laundry gameplay you still get PLENTY of objects that are both useful and decorative.

Most objects are really bright, colorful and rustic. What Laundry Day has to offer really stands out from the object themes of the base game’s build catalogue. They are really affordable and serve as a great starting point for your new household.

There are also objects such as the 2×2 coffee table and the 6-seat round dining table that are extra useful in terms of gameplay.

Gameplay

Laundry gameplay was something that was highly requested by the community since the release of The Sims 4. I understand that doing laundry doesn’t really sound like a fun thing to do in real life but in Sims that’s a whole other story.

Once you decide to place down any of objects that are related to laundry gameplay such as the hamper, washing machine or the dryer your Sims will start to have their clothes get dirty and, in case they don’t have a hamper, start leaving those dirty clothes on the floor. Don’t worry though – the clothing will be moved to the hamper automatically without having your Sim to walk to the hamper each time they change an outfit. However, Sims who are Slobs will have a tendency to leave clothing piles on the floor even with the hamper on your lot.

The Sims 4 Laundry Day Stuff Review

Washing your clothing is drying it is basically just clicking a few times on the objects mentioned. However, the real deal lies beneath the new, re-worked clothing system that comes with this pack. Laundry now has several different cleanliness and dryness levels. Clothing cleanliness varies on if your Sim has switched outfits during high or low personal hygiene need and clothing dryness depends on how good did the dryer / clothesline dry your clothes. Sims who have just been to the pool and decided to switch their outfit will leave wet clothes!

Clothes that are wet and dirty will influence negatively on your Sims but properly washed and dryed clothing will positively impact them with a huge variety of moodlets that are included.

Little details like this that come with this pack are what makes this Stuff Pack so it interesting – not the actual process of doing laundry.

The Sims 4 Laundry Day Stuff Review

There’s still so much more to uncover including laundry additives and different upgradebles for both the washing machine and the dryer!

What I really love about this Stuff Pack is that it provides more possibilities for both types of Sims – those who rely on technology and those who rely on nature, giving you a few more rich details for stories that you’ll tell in the game.

The Sims 4 Laundry Day Stuff Review

Things such as a rich build items catalogue and complex laundry gameplay are what makes this Stuff Pack one of the best in the series. The simming community has been eager for new everyday challenges that will throw their Sims out of balance. Doing laundry alone all day is not what will disturb your Sims but maintaing a career, raising a family, taking care of needs and on top of all that making sure that their clothes are clean and dry will have them begging you to use the Fill Motives cheat.

Even if that’s not really the case Sims will still appreciate warm and clean clothing which will only help them to go forward.

EA has changed prices for The Sims 4 Packs in multiple countries

UPDATE: EA Help has confirmed that the following countries will have new prices for The Sims 4 Packs:

  • Brazil
  • Canada
  • Denmark
  • Italy
  • Korea
  • Mexico
  • Norway
  • Poland
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • South Africa
  • United Kingdom

They also provided a very brief explanation on why did this price update happen:

When foreign exchange rates, currency values, and regional markets change, we have to update our prices.

We were able to keep prices the same for years, but these changes are causing updates.

Electronic Arts has decided to update its Origin service with new, more expensive prices for The Sims 4’s Stuff Packs, Game Packs and Expansion Packs.

Right now we have information that multiple countries have suffered these price changes. Here are the updated pack prices in some of the countries mentioned:

Brazil

  • Stuff Packs: R$ 19.90 > R$ 39.90
  • Game Packs: R$ 39.90 > R$79.90
  • Expansion Packs: R$ 79.90 > R$ 129.90

Poland

  • Stuff Packs: 39.90 PLN > 49.90 PLN
  • Game Packs: 59.90 PLN > 69.90 PLN
  • Expansion Packs: 119.90 PLN > 139.90 PLN

Canada

  • Stuff Packs: 9.99$ > 12.99$
  • Game Packs: 19.99$ > 25.99$
  • Expansion Packs: 39.99$ > 51.99$

United Kingdom

  • Stuff Packs:  7.99£ > 9.99£

Back in June 2017 EA has confirmed to us on why do these price changes occasionally happen – back when they updated the prices for Expansion and Game Packs in the UK:

Periodically, we update prices on our games due to currency fluctuations and regional market changes.  With the significant decline of the British Pound Sterling against other currencies including the U.S. Dollar and The Euro, as well as other market factors, we are increasing our UK wholesale pricing for EA console and PC titles this year, which will in turn increase our UK Recommended Retail prices.

Let’s take the Brazilian Dollar as an example: Game Packs used to cost around 12 USD in Brazil. Now, they cost 24 USD in Brazil.

Via Google

This price change has probably been applied to other EA games as well.

We yet have to see how much will this influence retail stores in these countries…

We’ll keep updating you on this story as it develops!

The Sims Mobile now has Stories

7

The Sims Mobile’s latest update has added a new feature – Stories!

Nope, not the social network type of stories that are becoming a new craze but actual stories that you can form by starting new relationships with other Sims. The Sims Mobile currently offers 9 different stories that you can begin with a Sim of your choice:

  • Secret Crush
  • Sports Buddies
  • Frenemies
  • Geek Speak
  • Love at First Sight
  • Arch-Nemeses
  • BFFs Forever
  • The Fixer-Upper
  • Tainted Love

You get to select a story for your Sim by socializing with another Sim in a certain way. Let’s say that your Sim has been very mean to another Sim. That will unlock the following Stories, giving you an option to select only one of them:

The Sims Mobile now has Stories

Each story has 5 different chapters. You progress through chapters with story events that last for 3 hours.

The Sims Mobile now has Stories

Finishing each chapter will unlock an interesting dialogue between Sims who are a part of that story. They’re often really interesting which is why you should pay close attention!

The Sims Mobile now has Stories

Completing each story will unlock certain rewards for your household.

The Sims Mobile’s Story Feature is one of many Features which have been added during the soft-launch period of The Sims Mobile, proving that the game’s development and expansion is still very active. We cannot wait until you get your hands on The Sims Mobile, which, according to EA, should be released this Spring.

The Sims 4: Summer Camp Challenge

The Summer Camp challenge is created by Ingridzcoco but is based on the techniques used in The Island Challenge which was orginally created by Simproved.

Now you might be asking your self what the Summer Camp Challenge actually is? If you have played The Island Challenge you might already have an idea as to what is instore. Well the Summer Camp Challenge is described by Ingridzcoco in the games tutorial as;

Mum and dad are fed up with the teenagers at home – they can’t stand any more of their rebelliousness. It’s time for them to grow up before they start their final year in high school, so they’ve sent them to your renowned Summer Camp for Troubling Teens. There, they might learn (or not) how to behave once and for all.

To finish the challenge you have to have at least three Sims earn all of the challenge badges. Once a Sim earns all the badges they can leave camp providing they don’t die first.

So are you ready for the challenge? You can find all of the details from the rules to starting the challenge and everything in between here.

Also be sure to check out Ingridzcoco latest video that explains the challenge.

Translated subtitles are avalaible in the video settings

Happy Simming!

Community Expectations for The Sims 4 in 2018

The year of 2017 was a great year for The Sims 4. The team behind the game added so much new content to the game which also added so many more ways to Play With Life!

At the start of the year I asked Simmers over on Sims Community Social what your expectations for The Sims 4 would be for this year?

One of the top themes many people are hoping to see added to the game this year is Seasons. There have been hints in more recent packs but still no confirmation from The Sims team if we will see Seasons this year.

Alongside Seasons, a Supernatural and University themed expansion is something many Simmers hope for due to the hugely positive reception they recieved when released for The Sims 3.

Community Expectations for The Sims 4 in 2018

Of course there are many Simmers who would like to see content that draws on some of the aspects of packs we have seen before in earlier games while still being full of brand new ideas.

  • A Salon Game Pack drawing on aspects of the Stylist career in The Sims 3 but with more options and maybe even as an active career.
  • A new Superstar Game Pack which draws on aspects from The Sims Superstar as well as the Movie Star Career in The Sims 3 and the Singing Career.
  • Television active career where you can progress through the ranks and have your Sim own their own TV Station.
  • More Pets but specifically smaller pets like hamsters, rabbits and small birds.
  • Specific Occult Stuff Packs – Unicorns, Witches, Zombies to name a few.

Community Expectations for The Sims 4 in 2018

It isn’t just all new expansions, game packs and stuff packs that Simmers would like to see. There are some things that people would like to see added through game patches.

  • New Worlds – Similar to Newcrest
  • New Vacation Worlds other than just Granite Falls
  • Cars
  • Create A Style for Build items and Create A Sim
  • Hip Hop, R&B and Latin radio stations
  • More Create A Sim options
  • Spiral Stair Cases
  • Curved walls, windows and swimming pools

There would be an endless list of possibilities of what The Sims team could add to The Sims 4 this year. We already have The Sims 4 Laundry Day Stuff Pack coming out in a matter of days and also the brand new Adventure themed Game Pack coming shortly as well. Who knows what other surprises the team have instore for us this year.

Is there something you would like to see added to The Sims 4 this year that isn’t mentioned in this article? Let us know in the comments below!
