EA Is Stopping Support For 32bit Systems

ea app 32bit end of origin

Origin is shutting down this April, and with that all support for 32bit Games comes to an end.

Over the last couple of years we followed closely as Electronic Arts rebranded its popular video game launcher app Origin to EA App. From 2020 when they announced the rebrand, EA slowly started the rollout across different Desktop devices. The EA Desktop App went public for Windows players in 2022, with a Mac support launch in March 2024.

Origin Ending Support 32bit

My personal experience with the Desktop app varied to some of the player reports, but a few months after EA devs were able to polish out most of the bugs and get the launcher out of Open Beta. Bringing the EA Desktop app experience for all players across Windows PC and Mac OS.

Unfortunately, this launcher switch also meant changing some of the system requirements for the launcher. As Origin launched in 2011, it went through numerous upgrades and now a recent rebrand. However, it also served as a purpose for players using a 32bit operating system to play their games!

Now, The Sims Titles including The Sims 2, The Sims Stories and certain games which ran exclusively on 32bit code have to look for a new home. Or a re-release of some sorts before the time runs out…

EA is Shutting Down Origin; And With that 32bit Support

The news, first reported by EuroGamer, appeared on the official EA Help article page instructing players to “update their Operating Systems for the EA App”. In short – players will no longer be able to even open up their EA Account without having a 64bit device that can support the EA App launcher.

What does this all entail? Read the official statement from Electronic Arts:

EA App 32bit Support announcement

Origin shutdown

On April 17, 2025, Origin will shut down, as Microsoft has stopped supporting 32-bit software.

If you use Origin, you need to upgrade to the EA app, which requires a 64-bit version of Windows.

If you need help, learn how to:

Will your account and games transfer to the EA app?

Yes, your account and games will transfer to the EA app. Log in to the EA app with the same account you use for Origin. When you log in, any games you had on Origin will be ready to play.

Games that list in-game hours in Origin will list the same hours in the EA app. Anything you’ve saved through Origin’s cloud will also transfer.

We can’t promise that mods will transfer to the EA app. Check with mod creators to see if your content can be transferred.

If you think something’s missing in the EA app, contact us.

Will you have to redownload your games?

If you’re upgrading to a new operating system, you won’t need to redownload your games.

If you need to switch to a newer device, you’ll need to transfer your data.

How to update your operating system

Check whether you need to update

Find out which version of Windows you’re currently running on your PC to see if you need to update it.

The EA app doesn’t support 32-bit versions of Windows. You’ll need to upgrade to a 64-bit operating system on your device to play your games. See if the version of Windows you’re running is 32 or 64-bit.

Install the latest version of Windows

  1. Before installing an update, check to see if your device meets system requirements.
  2. Next, back up your files so you don’t lose anything important.
  3. Once you’re ready, follow these steps from Microsoft Support to update Windows.

If you need to upgrade your PC

To run a 64-bit version of Windows, make sure your PC has a 64-bit-capable processor.

If your PC doesn’t have one, you’ll need to use a newer computer to play your games on the EA app.

Will your saved game data transfer over?

If you’ve enabled cloud saves, your saved game data will transfer, without any action on your part.

Some games don’t have cloud save capabilities, and those saves will need to be transferred manually to an updated device.

EA already pulled the plug on a 32bit version of The Sims 4 titled Legacy Edition, which had support for Sims DLC up to the Island Living Expansion Pack era.

The final switch from Origin to EA App is set for April 17th, 2025. Make sure you’re running on a 64bit computer before then to be able to enjoy all The Sims games and other EA App titles!

As for The Sims 3, the game got its update on January 13th to support newer end processors on Windows OS. The game has a 64bit version released for Mac OS, with a stabile version just updated recently for Windows.

Are you one of the affected?

We want to see how many 32bit operating system players there are! If you’ve been affected by this recent change, let us know in our unofficial community poll down below:

Did you play any 32bit Video Games on Origin recently?

Does this mean anything for the upcoming Nostalgia Now segment starting January 27th? We’re very eager to find out more if our old games will finally find a new, 64bit home.

Stay tuned to Sims Community for the newest updates as they surface!
