Our Sims 4 Challenges: Sulsulmelli's Legacy Challenges Explained

Sul Sul, it's Sulsulmelli here! Our Sims 4 Challenges in the community is a great source of inspiration for many Simmers, whether they're interested in storytelling or building. Today, I'll be sharing a few of my own legacy challenges, while also explaining how they work and the process behind bringing them to life. Many of you have probably already heard of the Not So Berry Legacy Challenge by Lilsimsie and Alwaysimming, which has been a huge inspiration for many legacy challenge creators out there, including myself. With that said, let's take a closer look at what a legacy challenge is, how to create one, and a few examples of my own.

What is a Legacy Challenge?

Like I mentioned above one of the most famous legacy challenges is Not So Berry. A legacy challenge is a challenge that you play through out generations, usually 10. You begin making your heir for generation one and then you must complete a few goals to be able to start generation two and so on. The goals can include all kinds of random things like maxing a skill, reaching a specific career level, have 3 babies with 2 different Sims, or build a house with a pool etc. Every challenge includes a few rules as well, like if it's okay to use money cheats, mods, what type of life span etc.

How Do I Make My Own Legacy Challenge?

Creating a legacy challenge isn't as easy as it sounds, at least in my opinion. It's definitely not something I can make in one night. It's a process that needs time to cook in the oven, but I enjoy every second of it (mostly), and I'd recommend anyone try making their own legacy challenge—you don't need any special skills. The first thing I need before I can start creating a challenge is an idea.

Brainstorming Ideas

How do I get an idea for a challenge to begin with? Sometimes ideas just pop up randomly while I'm out for a walk, making food, playing video games, or watching a series. I can even be inspired by real-life scenarios. When I get ideas, I write them down, let them develop a bit, and then I might use them later in an actual challenge. It's also a lot of fun to brainstorm ideas with a friend and come up with all kinds of different scenarios together.

Writing Stage

Once I have an idea, I create a document and start writing Generation 1, Generation 2, and so on. I also write goals that match the story I've come up with, and that's where the process can become quite time-consuming. I don't always want to end up using the same goals as in other challenges I've written. I want each challenge to feel personal and fresh, not like history is repeating itself. Sometimes I spend days working on a single generation because, yes, I'm a perfectionist too.

Designing the Template

This is my favourite part, the stage where the challenge truly comes to life in my opinion. I love design and colors, especially pastel colors if you haven't noticed already. This can sometimes be a bit of a challenge itself because I don't want all of my challenge templates to look the same. I want them to stand out from the crowd and feel unique. I also want them to match the theme, idea, and story behind the challenge. If you'd like to design your own templates, I recommend using the tool Canva. It's very beginner-friendly and easy to learn.

Uploading the Challenges

Sharing my challenges with you is always so much fun, but I must confess that I also feel a bit nervous every time I share a new one. Seeing you use the challenges in your gameplay is what makes all the work behind it feel worth it. It's so exciting to read your stories, and to see your Sims and builds. I'm so happy that I can inspire your save files and help keep them alive!

Tips for Making a Legacy Challenge

The most important thing when making a legacy challenge is to have fun while writing it. Don’t compare yourself too much or let yourself feel limited. Let your creativity lead the way. Here are a few tips and tricks that may help you:

  • Make a document and just start writing everything that comes to mind, you can organise it later.
  • It's okay to be inspired by others.
  • Things doesn't always have to make sense or be realistic. Remember it's a game your making it for, and the possibilities are endless.
  • Make a legacy challenge based on things like fruits, colors, cities, or whatever comes to mind
  • Ask a friend to create a legacy challenge together, I promise it's so fun!
  • If you're reading this, it's your sign to start making your very first challenge!

What Challenges Do I Make?

I always enjoy making challenges inspired by rom-coms and teenage drama, and sometimes it can be fun to spice things up with a little bit of goofiness and cringe scenarios. My goal is also to make them cozy and relaxed. I don't want to add too much chaos or grinding because I want the player to be able to shape their own story as well, without feeling forced or stressed while playing. For me, cozy is the key!

The Mellow Maple Legacy Challenge

The Mellow Maple Legacy Challenge is all about the slow cozy lifestyle. It's perfect for those who love everything about fall. This is one of the first challenges I have made, and it's only 6 generations. Like I mentioned before it's usually 10 generations, but I wanted to make a shorter legacy challenge because sometimes 10 can feel a bit much.

Once Upon a Sim Legacy Challenge

Once Upon a Sim Legacy Challenge is inspired by The Sims throughout the years. It's about nostalgia and iconic moments from The Sims. For example, I think we all know what happens when we remove the pool ladder from our Sims pool, or who Bob Pancakes is. In this challenge I wanted the vibe to be a bit wild and crazy, because that's exactly how The Sims can be.

Mermaid Crown Legacy Challenge

This challenge is one of the newest I've made, and the concept is a little different than the other ones. Mermaid Crown Legacy Challenge includes three different types of generation 1 that you can choose from. The player is supposed to pick their heir depending on the royal dynasty they're aiming for. You can read the rules down below. I wanted the player to feel even more involved in this challenge, because after all, they are their own storyteller their save files.

Ultimate Aspiration Legacy Challenge

We can never get to many base game challenges. I think we need more, and it's often something that is requested. I went all in making one generation inspired by each base game aspiration which is a total of 25. Therefore it's called the Ultimate Aspiration Legacy Challenge.

Worldwide Legacy Challenge

Another legacy challenge that's even bigger is the Worldwide Legacy Challenge. It's based on every world we have in The Sims 4, which is a total of 30 worlds (Batuu not included). Your Sims will travel all around the world for 30 generations, which sounds pretty epic, if I may say so myself. Each generation takes place in a new world, and the most fun part is that you can choose the order yourself and decide which world you'll travel to next. Bon voyage!

Mini Challenges

Lastly, I recently started making these so called mini challenges that you can play through in just one generation. They are perfect for those who doesn't want to go through a full 10 generation legacy challenge and prefer a shorter gameplay.

But, who is Sulsulmelli?

Hi hello, I’m Melli, short for Melizza. I’m a full-time content creator, freelance art director, and copywriter. I've been a Simmer ever since my older sister got The Sims 2 as a Christmas gift from our grandma. I started Sulsulmelli back in 2021 by building a few houses here and there in The Sims 4 just for fun and uploading them to Instagram. What began as a small creative hobby slowly grew into my own cozy little corner of the internet. I love interior design, eating chocolate, drinking coffee, and spending time with my little family. I’d say my Sims traits would be: Creative, Cat Lover, Neat, Perfectionist, and Green Fiend.

Thank you for reading all the way down here. I hope you found the article fun, helpful, and inspiring. What legacy challenge are you currently playing? Tell me all about your Sims stories in the comments below. For more news and guides, always keep up with the latest news here on Sims Community.
