Now that the EA buyout deal is confirmed to be closed by August 5th 2026, comments across our socials have been flooded with questions, speculation, and misconceptions about what will happen to EA, Maxis, and The Sims franchise. A lot of these comments don't line up with how this kind of deal works, or they mix older stories about EA that aren't connected to what is happening now.
With the finish line unfortunately in sight, players are trying to understand what the EA buyout means for their favourite franchise, and the direction that the company is going to take. We're here to answer some of our top questions and most repeated misconceptions, and explain what changes we're likely to see once EA becomes privately owned.

Table of Contents
Who Are The Buyers: A Brief Recap
EA is being acquired by a group of investors comprised of the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF), Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners. Silver Lake is a long-running technology investment company, and Affinity Partners is an investment fund founded and run by Jared Kushner. These groups are buying EA as a financial asset, not a creative project. Maxis stays where it is, and the teams working on The Sims 4 and other projects stay under EA.
When a company "goes private", it stops being traded on the stock market. Instead of thousands of shareholders owning small pieces of the company, ownership switches control to a smaller group of investors. EA still operates as EA. Studios still run their own projects. The change is about corporate structure.

What Players Are Asking
Below, we have gathered the most common questions we have received since the news of the EA buyout closing broke. While we can't list every question, we have managed to paraphrase and combine questions into digestible, bite-sized pieces for you.
Is It Just The Sims, Or All EA Games?
EA as a whole is being taken private, not just Maxis (the developers of The Sims franchise). Nothing in the deal singles out The Sims or treats it differently from any other EA title. Studios continue operating as they do now, and existing games remain under the same teams. These teams could, of course, be reshuffled or reduced in size depending on how the new owners want to allocate their budgets.
What Will Happen To The Sims?
The Sims stays exactly where it is. Maxis isn't being broken up, moved, or replaced as it currently stands. The EA buyout changes EA's ownership structure, not the development plans for The Sims or the teams working on it.

Will I Still Be Able To Access My Games?
Yes. Your library doesn't disappear as soon as the EA buyout deal is done, and your purchases won't get revoked. The platform you use to launch the game, be it the EA App, Steam, or consoles, stays in place. Nothing in the buyout affects your ability to play what you already own.
What Will Happen To My CC?
Custom Content is not tied to EA's ownership. If you use CC and mods now, you'll be able to use them after the EA buyout is complete. The only thing that will affect some CC and mods is game patches made by Maxis, not corporate restructuring.
Is Trump Involved?
Sort of. The deal is between Electronic Arts and the investment groups acquiring it. One of these investment groups is Affinity Partners, founded and owned by Jared Kushner, Son-in-law to President Trump. Kushner is the current Special Envoy for Peace Missions in the Middle East, which is why many players have linked this deal to wider political interest.
The EA buyout itself doesn't give Trump any role within EA, or its studios.

What Is The Problem With Saudi Arabia's Involvement?
The Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund is the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia, owned by the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The fund was set up by the Saudi Arabian government to invest funds and earn money for the Kingdom.
Saudi Arabia has a long history of human rights abuses both domestically and internationally. The Crown Prince has been responsible for the assassination of journalists who disagree with the Crown, the use of migrant slaves, and the forceful eviction and genocide of tribes to construct mega-projects such as The Line.

Can Maxis Be Sold To Another Publisher?
Not as part of this deal. Maxis remains under EA, and EA is the company being taken private. A studio sale would require a separate transaction, and there's no indication that Maxis is being shopped around. Selling off Maxis wouldn't be a responsible business decision for EA, as The Sims brings in a large chunk of revenue outside of the EA Sports titles.
What About The Sims Freeplay?
The Sims FreePlay is continuing under the same team at Firemonkeys Studios. Mobile titles aren't being pulled or merged. Nothing in the buyout changes how FreePlay is developed or supported.

Can I Delete My EA Account Without Losing The Games I Paid For?
If you delete your EA account, you lose access to anything tied to it. That is how account deletion works today, and the buyout won't change that. If you want to keep your games, you must keep your account active.
When you purchase a digital game such as The Sims 4 and any associated DLCs, you purchase a license to play the game, not ownership.
Community Misconceptions & Opinions
A big trend we've noticed throughout our comments is the high level of misconceptions surrounding the EA buyout. Most of this comes from misinterpretations, using other comments as a source, or just taking personal speculation as a fact.
The Quality of The Sims Will Improve
Private ownership doesn't automatically mean higher budgets or a shift in development. The same teams are continuing to make The Sims 4 and Project X, and the quality will depend on resources and direction.
The EA buyout will result in EA having to pay off its debts as it will no longer be a publicly traded company. If prior examples are anything to go by, we are more likely to see aggressive monetisation and efforts to keep players spending money, especially in free-to-play titles like The Sims 4. We have already seen preparation for this with The Sims 4 Marketplace.
Representation Will Be Removed From The Sims 4
Nothing in the buyout suggests there will be an effect on representation in The Sims 4. To retroactively remove aspects such as expanded pronouns, same-sex marriage, or gender options would be a waste of resources and would alienate the player base.
The PIF currently hold stakes in Nintendo, Capcom, Take-Two Interactive (The developers behind Grand Theft Auto), and Activision. These companies still include characters and mechanics related to LGBTQ+ identities, and content removal has never happened post-acquisition.

I Wish Maxis Never Sold The Sims
Maxis never sold The Sims to EA.
When Maxis was acquired by Electronic Arts in 1997, The Sims was little more than a pet project for Will Wright and his colleagues. Many at Maxis did not believe in The Sims' potential, and some even referred to it as "The Toilet Game". EA were the ones who backed The Sims.
Why Are You So Political Now?
We have received a few comments over the past day since the news of the EA Buyout deal closing broke about our reporting as a publication. We have also had plenty of questions and statements along a similar line. This one stuck out to us:
I used to like this page and now yall have gotten political smh.
We are a publication that focuses on The Sims, and have done so for the past 13 years. More recently, we have broadened our reporting to cover other games within the Life Simulator genre. Keeping players informed on the happenings of the companies behind these games is paramount.

Almost everything in life is political and shaped by politics. The Sims has always been more political, radical, and forward-thinking than most franchises. We want to represent all within the Sims community; after all, that is our namesake.

Thank you for explaining this
So nice to see the correction about Maxis CREATING The Sims and EA MAKING The Sims. The Sims and the life sim genre in general wouldn’t have happened if EA hadn’t back The Sims 1. I don’t think anything is going to change. These companies want to make money. They are not going to alienate The Sims consumer base and run the franchise into the ground to make a political point. I wouldn’t be surprised if they sell Maxis and The Sims to pay down some of the debt. It is not in their interests to destroy The Sims brand.

Before sims 1…. They were literally the first to do life sims games which i think started in the late 80s
Thanks for confirming it all. I’ve moved away from supporting all companies that PIF have a stake into, as personally I don’t want to fund people like that. I wish by some miracle Maxis and Sims could separate from EA but I know that’s not realistic.

Ignore my link that’s not my page, I’ve changed it on this comment.
This is such a sad news to me. A beloved franchise being bought by the thugs who killed Jamal Khashoggi. MBS won’t get any of my money.
Good article. But previous articles were actually quite anxiety provoking. They were being shared in sims discord communities and ramped up a lot of fears simmers had. It’s good to see you separate misinformation from the amount of regurgitation that’s happening in social media.
I feel like this article is still somehow incomplete. “These groups are buying EA as a financial asset, not a creative project.” – yes and this is the exact reason why so many people are pivoting form The Sims to other games (as they should). They buy it only to make money off of it and this investment should not ever have any return for them. All of the investors behind the companies are highly immoral and unethical individuals with the King of The Land of Absolute Monarchy and Relative Freedom and Jared Kuschner (who is actively buing an public island in Alabnia to turn it into a private richy rich resort) being a tip of an iceberg. You’re being too nice to all of them and it is just frustrating.
I’ve been playing Sims 4 since 2006. I don’t really care who buys out what. I just hope graphics will improve more, leaning toward better graphics like INZOI, in the near future.
Representation Will Be Removed From The Sims 4
Well, how to say, it this was timing or Maxis was prepared for this buyout, saying Royalty and Legacy is the last pack
Is true that retrospectively would no wort remove representation and inclusion (as wanted the mod DEI Remover)
But Im sure after the sale to arabs, they could no include LGBTQ sims at new worlds, o even black sims such as Hecking family at Brindeport Bay or Celeste Michaelson at San Sequoia

for people that downvote me
Nintendo: ~8.5%
Capcom: ~10%
Take-Two Interactive: ~6.8%
Activision: ~3.5%
About The Sims FreePlay is barely developed by the Firemonkeys studio since 2021, Slingshot studios (India) is charge now (check their website).
The PIF currently hold stakes in Nintendo, Capcom, Take-Two Interactive (The developers behind Grand Theft Auto), and Activision. These companies still include characters and mechanics related to LGBTQ+ identities, and content removal has never happened post-acquisition
You cant compare 93% vs
Nintendo: ~8.5%
Capcom: ~10%
Take-Two Interactive: ~6.8%
Activision: ~3.5%
I’m pretty sure they’ll eventually remove pretty much all inclusivity.

how? and why?
The Sims team will no make new EP
Electronic Arts laid off approximately two-thirds of the staff at its Melbourne-based Firemonkeys Studio.
The buyout will definitely affect the Sims future. As a Middle Eastern, state companies are always directly managed by the rulers and SIF buying out or investing in gaming companies is in part a desire and order from the MBS, so it’s not strange at all if some feature added or removed will be ordered from “his majesty.” and depends how much the crown prince likes The Sims, he’ll pour more money expecting better quality and content, but he’ll definitely expect far less inclusivity and rather more marketing to Middle Eastern culture.
Keep in mind, the one who wanted to control EA is Silver Lake.
Affinity Partner helped them to find a partner but Saudi PIF was only interested by EA Sports part that’s why they spent only $35 billion (EA Sports worth) instead of the whole $55 billion including EA Entertainment.
Can we move our games to a disc I wish we could have kept the disc that way.
Since EA has to repay the $20 million debt, players money will probably go to JP Morgan instead of Saudi PIF.
At the same time, Saudi PIF doesn’t care of money, EA revenue ($7.5 billion) is a drop in an ocean (Saudi PIF revenue in 2025 : $119.7 billion)
Silver Lake doesn’t care about profits because their goal is to increase EA worth and sell their part in 5 years as they did with Dell and the other companies.
