The Sims 4: Little Campers Kit Overview

Everything included with the Little Campers Kit to give your kiddos the backyard camping experience of their dreams!

The Little Campers Kit for The Sims 4 is all about backyard fun for the kids. The kit comes with a total of 25 new Buy Mode objects themed around childhood imagination as well as one styled room, which is a backyard camping setup.

In an effort to keep the functionality of past content in mind when creating the Little Campers Kit, The Sims Team only added functionality to some of the objects that directly relate to the backyard camping experience. For example, the firepit that comes with this kit is functional for hanging out and roasting marshmallows but other firepit interactions remain exclusive to the Outdoor Retreat game pack. The bedsheet projector screen in this kit is a functional television and Sims can watch all the normal TV channels on it; however, movies remain exclusive to the Movie Hangout Stuff pack.

In addition to the firepit and projector, this kit comes with plenty of other functional objects for our child Sims to play with. The cardboard car is a functional activity table. The makeshift rocket is a functional dollhouse, the bigfoot is a functional stuffed animal, and the tiny ranger toys are toybox toys that can be played with by both children and toddlers. The kit also comes with a swing set. Simmers who enjoy family gameplay and are looking for new things for their kids and toddlers to play with will definitely find this kit to be a worthwhile addition to their game.

As always, we have the full catalogue overview and in-game close-ups of all the objects in all available swatches for you!

Small CAS Additions to The Sims 4

Could The Sims Team be preparing the game for the upcoming Game Pack?

Yesterday’s SDX Drop for The Sims 4 has brought in a new revamp of The Goths Family, along with a new set of items in Build Mode.

The revamp of The Goths Household has new looks for each family member, with updated looks that feature some of the additions from previous Content Updates for The Sims 4.

Check out the full family portrait preview below:

Small CAS Additions to The Sims 4

It seems that in addition with The Goths revamp The Sims Team also included in some new Face Swatches and Presets in Create A Sim.

First spotted by @Mushilda, the new variants include:

  • Two New Nose Presets
  • Mortimer’s Wrinkles and Eyebrows

DotSim and @Simmatically also spotted a new, sudden change in Create A Pet. After 5 years of the same old descriptive text about Stencils, it seems The Sims Team has revamped the text:

One of the new Nose presets in The Sims 4 also look like they could easily fit for a Werewolf Type. It was first hinted in the Roadmap Reveal about the Upcoming Game Pack for The Sims 4 being Werewolves. Including some visual and audio teasers.

More clues were spotted over time in the teaser:

The upcoming Kit for The Sims 4 – Little Campers, also has a promotional image featuring a Werewolf Transformation in The Sims 3 on the big movie projector screen:

The Sims 4 has a New Lag Issue

13

The Pronouns Update seems to be draining a lot of CPU Power

On May 24th The Sims 4 did a surprise release of the Customizable Pronouns Update. The Update integrates a feature within Create A Sim where you can now edit Pronouns for each Sim you make, allowing customization of pronouns. From he, she, they to your own.

This update has rolled out for everyone, although the Pronouns Feature is currently only available for English speaking users.

Nonetheless, the Pronouns Feature itself isn’t the problem. It’s the latest version of The Sims 4, which seems to have had a significant impact on the game’s performance.

Considering that Maxis had to rewrite a lot of code, something’s went unnoticed behind the game’s code. Players have started reporting massive Lag Spikes for The Sims 4 all across our platforms. There’s also a hot discussion happening at EA AHQ, with 41 people who already reported the problem in just over a day.

The Sims 4 has a New Lag Issue

What’s happening after the latest Update? Players have described the following:

  • My game never froze like this before but after this pronouns update my game freezes every couple seconds and stays frozen for almost 30 seconds at a time, and if I try to click anything on my screen a message pops up saying that sims 4 isn’t responding. I don’t have any mods or cc, I have tried repairing game and clearing cache, none worked. – nasgodlyy
  • After latest update the game started to have long loading time in every few seconds. (My friend has the same issue after update.) I’ve tried to update my computer, check viruses etc. and restart the game and the computer, but it did not help. – asrhana
  • My game loaded just fine, but as soon as I entered game play, every time I click on my screen, it says Not Responding and I get the circle of death for about 30 seconds. Yesterday, before the update… I had zero problems. – abeeric
  • CPU Usage keeps fluctuating but highest it goes is 76.2% – annibutterfly8

Did you have lags before this update ? If so, where ? Hardly any lagging before, now it lags when I try to click things on the main page for resuming/starting new game, in the game mode, etc. Will freeze for 10 seconds or so, play for 10-30 seconds, then freeze again, etc.

Where does the game lag now ? Everywhere or specific areas ? Everywhere

Do you play a fresh or an existing save game Existing game

Are you using mods/cc and if so, have you tested without them ?  No, never used

For Sims 4, CPU ranges from 50-60%, GPU mostly stays at 0, but I noticed it spiked every once in a while for 2 seconds to some random number (7, 15, etc.) and then immediately returns back to 0

– Azalea125

The update has just recently been rolled out, so it will be hard to pin point right away what could be the root cause of this. However, folks at EA HQ including EA Experts and Players are working together to find a solution and probable cause of this.

Considering that the issue is still fresh we might not get a reply right away from The Sims Team about the issue and its potential workaround. We’ll keep you updated as soon as we know more!

Modder adds Live Mode Features for Pronouns in The Sims 4

Integrate the new pronouns feature into your gameplay with this mod!

Just yesterday, we expressed in our article about the pronoun update that we wished we had the ability to ask Sims their pronouns and have those pronouns show up in the Sim Info panel. Not even 24 hours later, a modder has granted our wish.

Modder adds Live Mode Features for Pronouns in The Sims 4

Lumpinou‘s Ask/Tell Pronouns mod adds this simple but important social option to the game following the pronoun update. You will be able to tell other Sims your Sim’s pronouns, ask other Sims about their pronouns, and the game will remember those pronouns going forward.

Modder adds Live Mode Features for Pronouns in The Sims 4

There are two versions of the mod. One version allows Sims to ask/tell pronouns autonomously. The other version is user-directed, only. Only install one version. After installing the mod, there will be two new options available under the Friendly social menu: Ask About Pronouns and Tell Pronouns.

Modder adds Live Mode Features for Pronouns in The Sims 4

Asking another Sim about their pronouns gives you a popup informing you of the Sim’s pronouns. If you go to the relationship panel and click on that Sim’s Info Panel, you will see their pronouns listed in the relationship bits at the bottom.

Modder adds Live Mode Features for Pronouns in The Sims 4

Your Sim can also share their own pronouns with others by using the Tell Pronouns social option. The other Sim will discover your Sim’s pronouns and your Sim’s pronouns will be listed on their Sim Info panel for your Sim, too.

A mod like this is very simple but adds much-needed depth to the new pronouns feature. We’re happy a modder decided to take this on but we still hope EA will follow suit with a feature like this of their own in the future so all platforms can enjoy it.

EA is working on a Social Creator Platform for The Sims

2

The upcoming Platform for The Sims could bring Creators and Players together!

Please note that this article contains information that hasn’t been confirmed by EA and Maxis as of yet. However, there are multiple signs and information that lead to EA developing a platform specially designed for players and creators.

Let’s get started!

Patent Registration

Back in December 2021 we had a wave of new Patents registered by EA for mechanisms and new systems designed specially for The Sims. These patents proposed features and integration between the player and creator, with workflows that hint towards the future development for The Sims.

One of the patents published on the official EU Intellectual Property Office was a patent for “SimGuru”. Vague information about the software has been revealed in the patent, including the following information from the official patent listing:

  • The patent has been filed in April 2020
  • There’s an illustrative image with a new icon and the word “SimGuru”. Could be a temporary placeholder made for the patent.
  • Includes vague information in the Goods and Services section of the patent, including:

9 – Computer game software; downloadable computer game software via a global computer network and wireless devices; video game software; downloadable information relating to computer software and game software; instruction manuals in electronic format.

38 – Online communications services; providing online electronic bulletin boards, chatrooms and forums for transmission of messages amongst computer users; providing access to an internet discussion website.

41 – Entertainment services, namely, providing an on-line computer game; provision of information relating to electronic computer games provided via the Internet; providing information online relating to computer games and computer enhancements for games.

42 – Computer software technical support services; providing online information about the use of computers and software; providing online support services for computer software and game software users; maintenance and updating of computer software and game software; software advisory and consultancy services; advisory and consultancy services relating to computer software and game software; hosting online facilities for conducting interactive discussions.

EA is working on a Social Creator Platform for The Sims

The patent reveals information that the SimGuru Platform could deliver features such as:

  • “Downloadable” computer and mobile software
  • Provides communication services including Chat Rooms, Forums, Messages and more
  • Contains and hosts information and services for online support, information, and more.

The official patent talk is all so very confusing from my personal perspective, considering that the patent was filed just over 2 years ago. Considering that a lot of things have changed since then, including the workflows and the pandemic, it could mean that the SimGuru project evolved into something else eventually.

Which is why we now have information about the Creator Platform fresh out of the oven:

Creator Platform Job Listing

Just a couple of hours ago Maxis has listed a new Job Opportunity on the Maxis Careers website, containing lots of new information. Specifically on the fact that Maxis is working on a new Platform for Creators and Players of The Sims.

The latest Job Listing is titled Senior Experience Designer, Social. And before you say anything – everything in the job description specifically talks about The Sims.

Let’s break it down:

As a Senior Experience Designer on Social for The Sims, you’ll help envision and implement how players socialize, connect, and be inspired on our platform. Reporting to the Development Director for Design, you’ll work with a multidisciplinary team of enthusiastic craftspeople from all walks of life. Use your passion and critical thinking skills to define the social platform and related systems throughout product development, from initial prototypes to refined solutions. Partner with your Design, Production, UXR and Engineering partners to foster a data-informed and iterative approach to delivering value in a growing game product spanning platforms and playstyles. Ultimately, you will create experiences that surprise, delight, and invite millions of people around the world to Play with Life.

Responsibilities:

  • You will drive user-centered design processes to deliver world-class design solutions.
  • You will apply appropriate UX methods for the challenges at hand (Experience mapping, journey maps, task flows, sketching, wireframing, storyboarding, prototyping) to explore problem spaces and deliver solutions that are informed by player data & insights.
  • You will partner with stakeholders to set priorities and find balanced design solutions to player needs and business goals within technical constraints.
  • You will champion the holistic vision for core social experiences through development of principles, scenarios and personas, partnering with XD Director and Creative Director to inform overall product vision.
  • You will partner with UXR to set strategic research goals, plan tactical studies, and create opportunities for foundational and directional research.
  • You will contribute to the creation and maintenance of a multi-platform design system
  • You will work to build bridges between disciplines and foster a creative collaborative environment.
  • You will put inclusive design principles into practice. Help define a creator ecosystem that is responsible, sustainable, and actively protects our players from toxicity.

Confused with the professional jargon? Don’t worry, here’s how I understood this listing and responsibilities:

  • The Sims is working on a platform for players to connect, share, socialize and communicate between each other. Including inspiring creators to create new things!
  • Different scenarios and personas could be included within this Creator Platform. Possibly allowing for players to identify which type of player they are within The Sims.
  • The social platform that Maxis and EA are working on will be multi-platform. We can assume that this means across Desktop, Mobile and possibly even Consoles.
  • Considering that it’s a Social Creator Platform, there is a huge emphasis on ensuring that the environment is safe and welcoming for all the players.

This job position is a permanent one, meaning that Maxis and EA are probably looking into making the Creator Platform an ongoing thing that could last for years ahead. Goes in line with The Sims Team’s reassurements that The Sims 4 has years ahead of new stuff!

Possible Announcement Soon

Interestingly enough, some of the players within the EA Creator Network program have gotten access to a new “Support-A-Creator” program that just rolled out.

Interesting things to note:

  • The Support-A-Creator allows for players to enter Creator Codes at checkout of Origin, giving Content Creators a certain percentage of revenue for referral.
  • It’s currently in Beta, and only The Sims Franchise is included, with only a few of the players within the EA Creator Network announcing the Beta.
https://twitter.com/Ebonix/status/1527303076658356227

The Support A Creator Beta starts now until June 16th! We don’t know what will happen afterwards, but all the signs and findings are coming together.

A special platform for Creators and Players for The Sims could be a huge thing for The Sims 4 and the Franchise in general. It would also go in line with Maxis’ current rebranding and new philosophy that encourages building bridges between Creators and Players, as well as encouraging new ways to create.

Everything you need to know about Customizable Pronouns in The Sims 4

Full Guide to the Customizable Pronouns Feature for The Sims 4

The long-awaited pronoun update is finally here! For the English language version of The Sims 4, anyway.

The Sims Team has been sharing their progress on adding pronouns to the game for quite some time now and today, they’ve released an update for the English language version of the game adding customised pronouns to CAS. The update is now live on both PC/Mac and consoles.

Unfortunately, this update only pertains to English copies of the game currently. The Sims Team has expressed challenges with handling custom pronouns in different languages, which all treat pronouns very differently. We hope to see this update rolled out in every language soon but for now, English is the only language that supports the pronoun changes.

Here’s everything you need to know about using the new pronoun system!

Pronouns in CAS

Everything you need to know about Customizable Pronouns in The Sims 4

When you enter CAS, clicking on the name fields opens up another option for pronouns next to it. Players can choose their Sim’s pronouns from a drop-down list in this menu. By default, She/Her, He/Him, and They/Them are already listed as options but if your Sim uses pronouns that aren’t listed here, there is a Custom Pronouns option.

Everything you need to know about Customizable Pronouns in The Sims 4

If you choose to give your Sim custom pronouns, a popup screen will appear allowing you to enter the custom pronouns of your choice into the fields. For each field, there is a sample sentence below it so you can see how your choices will look written out in the game. The pronouns in the sentence change to reflect what you’ve entered into that field.

Everything you need to know about Customizable Pronouns in The Sims 4

Once you’ve confirmed your choice of pronouns for your Sim, they will be reflected next to their name in parentheses.

You are not required to specify pronouns through this menu. You can ignore it and the game will select the pronouns that match your Sim’s gender identity by default. The pronoun feature is an optional CAS feature for players who would like more customised control over the pronouns their Sims use.

Pronouns In-Game

Since Sims speak in a fictional language called Simlish, your customised pronouns will primarily only show up in game notifications, such as skill notifications, phone calls, and other things of that nature.

We created a household with a range of pronouns. One masculine Sim did not have any pronouns set at all. The other Sims ranged between She/Her, He/Him, and They/Them as their set pronouns.

As you can see, the notifications they received while we played the game reflected their chosen pronouns. Our masculine Sim whose pronouns were not set in CAS used He/Him pronouns by default in his notifications. Our non-binary Sim whose pronouns were set to They/Them in CAS had their chosen pronouns reflected in the notifications that popped up for them during gameplay.

Apart from written notifications, pronouns do not play a role in gameplay. We think it would be a nice addition to the game if an Ask About Pronouns social was added in the Friendly category, which would then reflect their pronouns in the Sim Info panel.

We hope The Sims Team plans to continue expanding on this important feature for representation and bring it to all languages, as well as listen to feedback from players about ways pronouns can be further integrated into the game that makes everyone feel seen and included.

Behind The Scenes of The Sims 4 Customizable Pronouns Update

4

Including Frequently Asked Questions!

The Sims Team has released a new blog post to talk about The Sims 4 Customizable Pronouns Update!

In case you missed out on the news, the team has just released the Customizable Pronouns Feature to The Sims 4 through the latest Update – just rolled out for PC, Mac and Consoles.

In the development blog the team talks about all the technical challenges and development stories that happened to make this Update a reality.

The Customizable Pronouns Update has been rolled out in English Language first. Fear not, as the feature will soon be available in all 18 different languages! How soon? We’ll have to wait and see.

Until then, enjoy the behind the scenes:

Hello Simmers! SimGuruDuck here to give you a peek into the brand new update to the game that will make it possible to add custom pronouns to Sims in Create a Sim.

RESEARCH AND BACKGROUND

We first announced that we were looking into this feature last year after hearing feedback from the community, however this is something that has actually been on our minds for quite some time before we announced it formally. As with our vibrant community of Simmers, our development team is an extremely talented and diverse group of folks that brings various perspectives into the content that we create. So, we decided to come forward with information about our investigation into the addition of customizable pronouns in The Sims™ 4.

We began our research in two ways. First we started looking into the game itself to see how we could approach the addition of customizable pronouns. We went through a couple of different explorations, but ultimately where we landed was to create a system that allows for pronouns to be defined by the player and have those then be used in multiple different text strings. This was achieved through creation of new tokens, or bits of text that are reused, that support custom input from players.

The other aspect of research that we did was around the importance of including customizable pronouns to be more inclusive of folks from different lived experiences. We reached out to the It Gets Better Project and GLAAD and worked with them to learn more about how pronouns are used, particularly by trans and nonbinary people. Through this research and through doing a deep dive into the game, we’ve learned about all of the different complex areas that binary gender was present in The Sims 4. From here we then worked with our team to come up with some wireframe designs to help us work on making this feature a reality.

HOW TO CUSTOMIZE YOUR PRONOUNS IN THE SIMS 4

You’ll be able to change the pronouns of Sims you create in Create a Sim.

  • When entering Create a Sim select ‘Hello, my name and pronouns are…’
  • This will open up the name input screen. Next to the name fields you’ll see a section for pronouns.
  • In this first version of the feature, you’ll be able to select from
    • They/Them
    • She/Her
    • He/Him
    • Custom
  • If you’d like to use pronouns that are not included as multiple choice, you will be able to create custom versions by inputting the Subjective, Objective, Possessive Dependent, Possessive Independent, and Reflexive forms of the pronouns you wish to use.
    • Don’t worry if that seems a bit complicated! We have some handy dandy example sentences that you’ll see in the window.
  • Once you’ve input your pronouns these will be saved to your Sims and the game will automatically update to use the correct pronouns where possible.

VERSION ONE

This first version focuses on customizable pronouns in English only, but our intent is to update and expand this feature over time. These updates will allow us to ensure we’re catching areas where the conversion may not be taking place right away, so we can continue to make the feature even better.

The feature has been fully tested and works to change out instances of default pronouns to the custom ones you may have chosen, however there may be times where the feature doesn’t choose the correct form pronoun or it uses the default pronoun of the assigned gender. This is due to several factors such as the complexity of how the feature was implemented, as well as rules around conjugation in English. An example of something you might see is “They likes…”. In this situation, the correct grammatical structure should be “They like…,” The feature works by  replacing the pronoun token itself rather than the pronoun and the following verb. In the future we’ll be working to make sure that the text is crafted in a way that reduces this type of issue, but we will work to fix instances of this when found in previously released content. If you notice anything that may be off, please let us know by posting a screenshot in this Answers HQ thread.

This first update for customizable pronouns to be supported in English is a step in the direction of a more inclusive experience for Simmers, and I’m excited to see how we’ll be able to evolve the game and feature over time to support more languages. While this update isnt the be-all end-all of representation of nonbinary and other gender diverse folks, we strongly feel that it’s important for us to approach better inclusivity over time as we figure out ways to work within the limitations of our code.

We don’t have anything to share about the roll out to additional languages yet, but stay tuned to our social media channels as we’ll share more info once it’s available.

We’re looking forward to seeing players’ reactions to this new feature in The Sims 4.

F.A.Q.

  • Q: How do I change my Sim’s pronouns in The Sims 4?
    • You will be able to change your Sim’s pronouns within Create a Sim in The Sims 4. To do so, click on the text that says “Hello, my name is…”. From here you will see a dropdown menu next the name entry fields. You will have the option to select from ‘they/them’, ‘she/her’, ‘he/him’, or ‘Custom Pronouns’. If you select ‘Custom Pronouns’ you will be able to define five different grammatical forms for your custom pronouns.
  • Q: Will I have to use customizable pronouns when creating a Sim in Create a Sim?
    • A: No! Players will be able to create Sims in Create a Sim as they currently do. If you choose not to change the pronouns of your Sim, the game will default to pronouns that are typically associated with their selected gender. (e.g. A female Sim will default to she/her pronouns if players don’t interact with the feature)
  • Q: Once I choose my Sim’s pronouns, will I still be able to change them later?
    • A: Anytime a player wants to change their Sim’s pronouns they will be able to via Create a Sim. To change the Sims pronouns after initial selection you will need to enter into Create a Sim to change them using the same flow.
  • Q: Why are custom pronouns only available in English at launch?
    • A: The Sims 4 was initially released in 2014, and since then has grown to be an amazing experience over the years with many different packs. The game contains a large amount of text that has been translated into 18 different languages as of this blog! With this amount of languages there is a lot of complexity around how different languages and cultures use pronouns, so we’ll need additional time to research how to properly integrate grammar rules into other languages that the game is available in.
  • Q: There are still some areas where the wrong pronoun is showing up. What should I do to report this?
    • A: While this feature has been fully tested there are limitations to what the feature picks up. Please let us know if there are any instances where the correct pronoun might not be displayed in this thread on Answers HQ.
  • Q: Why are there still instances of gendered language in the game like Policeman or Policewoman.

    • A: We’ve focused on the addition of customization of pronouns in The Sims 4 in this patch. We understand that there is still work to be done to make the game more inclusive of all genders, and we look forward to continuing to investigate areas where we can further improve this in the game.
